I think the truth is somewhere in between. I think that some of it was the thinking that these priests could be rehabilitated, but I also think that some of it was straight up cover up.

Bank robbers and murderers can be rehabilitated, but they still have to serve time in prison for their crimes.

I see France’s Catholic Church has cracked down on this brought up in another thread a few weeks ago but even then, the French Church announced per '98 that any violator of the law would be handed over to the Police immediately, that they would not tolerate this.

A lot of the stories we see, as unpleasant as they are, are from the '80s, I just hope it can be shut down as much as possible, totally would probably be difficult in any walk of life. It has been a black eye.

It’s not a problem that dates to the 80s. It goes much further back than that.

Sadly, we kids knew of an abusive priest back when we were in Jr. high back in the mid 60s. At the time it was talked about in the schoolyard and we thought our parents knew nothing. It turns out that one family reported him to the bishop and were roundly chastised by His Excellency for smearing a good man. They were further scolded by the priest himself from the pulpit just before he was replaced.

Fast forward 40 years and we find out that he had been reported to his bishop back in the early 30s, a few scant years after he’d been ordained. Nothing was done then, he went on to abuse in several different parishes.

What I was saying is these stories from Los Angeles seemed to take place mainly in the '80s, no one said it never happened before. In fact, sad to say, there is a book that asserts there was a crackdown of sorts even in the Germany of the 1930s.

There were about 10,000cases of clerical abuse reported between 1950 and 2002
Reported cases since 2002 have occurred in tiny numbers since than some years in single digits
Compare this this to 600,000 cases per year in the US
Even at its height 1968 the % of cases were less than the 2005 public school rate
Rememember these same cases have appeared in the news multiple times. The diochese of LosAngelas paid victims 1,000,000 dollars each to settle
There is a conserted effort by media to make this issue A Catholic issue.
The truth is it a societal issue which has never been addressed except by the. Church
The bishops training and reporting policy seems to been working.
But after studying this issue for years I’M convinced it will always be with us.

They are trying to get any information that will lead to an arrest. They are picking through the files to see if there are any statutes that have not run out or exceptions that would allow an arrest and prosecution. They want to learn more about how we conducted the coverup. They are also trying to make a statement. Mahony has already been stripped of his administrative duties by the current bishop. But the people here are absolutely infuriated that these priests have not seen “justice” and are grasping for any way to see them punished. If it were left to the community, they’d burn Mahony (and Curry) at the stake.

I believe that the statute of limitations would have run out for any criminal matter. This is a 35 year old man who alleges that he was sexually abused, and is bringing a civil case seeking damages.

Isn’t it interesting that we can devote so much time to 30 year old cases when were in the middle of an epidemic.

Catholic victims came toward in some cases because of large
payouts. Where is the insentive for non Catholic victims.
Its interesting that the Cardinal was the liberal darling.
The media has turned on him.
He is all they have left in keeping this story alive.
It has 0 to do with children
The media attempt at making this a Catholic issue is bizarre.
In my mind the only people who this benifit are the Ignorant., the anti church bigots and pedfiles.
