More men 'have oral cancer virus'

Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is more common among men than women, leading to an increased risk for men of head and neck cancers, a US study suggests.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) study assessed around 5,500 people aged 14 to 69.

Around 10% of men had oral HPV, compared with 3.6% of women.

HPV causes the majority of cervical cancers, as well as genital and anal - and head and neck cancers.

But disease can shake peoples’ worldviews so who knows.

And in terms of “Crusade”, the original Crusades, weren’t about saving souls. Were they?

Not exactly, but it is confirmation that sexual monogamy is safer than having multiple sexual partners.
(As if anyone had doubts about that :o)

The study also indicates that smoking is an independent risk factor for being infected with HPV.
In analysis inclusive of individuals 14 to 69 years of age, factors independently associated with prevalent oral HPV included age, sex, lifetime number of sexual partners, and current number of cigarettes smoked per day.

If any disease were discovered to infect women at 3x the rate in men, I think it would be important news. The same is true for disease disproportionately affecting men.

The peak in older men could be related to the fact that they would have been making their sexual debut during the sexual revolution of the 1960s; the dip in middle-aged men could be the result of the dampening impact that the HIV epidemic had on sexual behavior. The peak in younger men could be related to one result of that epidemic — the perception that oral sex is “safe sex.”

And sexual monogamy has always been taught by which religion?

These problems would not exist if the majority of people listened to Christian teachings.
If only a minority engaged in sexual promiscuity, there would be no source of HPV for them. HPV is by far sexually spread. Infection at birth is very rare. Infection of genital regions by casual touch is also very rare, unless we all do casual sex.

Are you kidding. Casual sex in peoples’ minds is good and without fault. Just use a condom and use birth control. Have regular HIV tests. No issues.

These diseases would not exist if they did not have the ecological niche our behaviours opened up for them.

hmm… I think promiscuous people tend to find one another, so a reservoir of HPV will always be in the community. But certainly there is an exponential factor of risk as the level of HPV in a population rises.

In general, oral sex is safer with regards to HIV. However, it shouldn’t be blandly accepted as safe as there are risk factors such mouth sores or gum disease. Monogamy is still the best policy, if someone is not abstinent…

And they got it from Judaism. Yes Judeo-Chistianity. But the Catholic Church is outstanding in preaching against oral sex, non penetrative sex etc - which also leads to infection.

Relatively isolated groups would not be reservoirs. You do get to a point where the reservoir is unable to sustain itself.

Right, but I did say safer, not safe. In the past the term “safe sex” was employed for consistent condom use, but that has now also been replaced by “safer sex”.

Monogamy (when not after marriage, and even after) requires trust. I’ve known many women who were monogamous and became infected with HIV by their husbands and boyfriends.

But again that’s the safest way and is also conveniently the way the religion teaches. A deeper understanding of marriage beyond a mere state institution and temporary romantic euphoria is something needed to prevent such tragedies.

It won’t if you only French kiss one person, ne? And it won’t (or will be very unlikely) if in your society the HPV oral prevalence is low because few people have casual sex. HPV doesn’t come from nowhere. It’s not a commensal organism of the mouth like Fusobacterium. You get it in specific ways and you pass it on in similar ways.
