The Los Angeles Times provides an overview of the recent controversies in Minneapolis over Muslims’ claims of conscience in the workplace…

More opinion…

There are bills either up for debate in state legislatures or already signed into law that would require Catholic pharmacists to dispense birth control pills, Catholic hospitals to offer “all women’s health services” (including abortion) and so on.

If we do not support other people’s rights to stand by their religious convictions, who will spring to our defense when ours are attacked?

This was my thought too when I heard of others sneering at Muslims who would refuse to ring up bacon in the checkout aisle.

My question is, is there a difference of degree? Catholics would consider participating in contraception, abortion, etc a matter of objectively grave magnitude. How would Muslims view cooperation with a non-Muslim’s desire to eat pork or drink alcohol? To them, is that an offense of similar gravity as we would consider cooperating with an abortion?

Every place I go, I see accomodations for people with special needs – ramps for wheelchairs, telephones for the hearing impaired, braille signs for the blind. How hard would it be to accomodate a checkout clerk who politely asks the customer to swipe his own bacon through the laser reader?

In fact, I would see this as a good thing. I would then challenge the anti-Catholic forces – “You accomodate a Muslim who doesn’t want to touch bacon, and you try to force a Catholic to participate in abortion! Where’s the justice in that!!”
