The thing that gets me is simply this.
I knew a lady who had been sexualy abused by a much older step brother when she was a child. It was proven when she was a child that this had happened yet no charges against perp were ever filed. When she turned 18 she decided to press charges only to be told that “the statutes of limitations” prevented her from filing charges.
So I read this and think

I am not saying that this is wrong (though I am beginning to doubt the veracity of some of these complaints) Nor am I condoning anything these pedophiles did or the souls that have been lost because of thier actions. I am simply wondering how it is that there isn’t a time frame for complaints made on the catholic church but there are for everyone else?

My guess is the difference lies between civil law and criminal law.The thing that gets me is simply this.

The situation with the Jesuits in the NW is not a criminal case, it is a civil case.
The lady you know could not file criminal charges, but likely can still pursue a civil case.

I am in no way defending or condoning the charges.
However, the use of the word pedophiles is very misleading, and quite inaccurate.

Actually, the laws vary for each case involving Civil suits and criminal prosecution from state to state. It is not uniform. Also the date from which one counts from also may begin at different points. For some it is counted from the day it occurred, the day they turned 18, or if severely traumatized, it can also be counted from the day they began to remember. Some people break too and suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder because of the abuse, now called DID, splitting off at the time of abuse. A better word would be “Discovery”. In some cases it is “delayed Discovery”.
Most states have extended their statue of limitations. In 1997 about 28 states added extensions and changed the criteria.
Some states also use common law.
For other states concerning civil actions it ranges from 2 to 17 years after they become an adult.
It gets kind of weird, especially in cases where the crime occurred BEFORE extensions were placed into affect.
I noticed all but Idaho in the states mentioned have a generous extension.

But what might be at stake here is conspiracy charges. Conspiracy to conceal a crime and/or obstruct any police investigation are a different set of laws. And if the conspiracy is considered “on going” then there is no statue of limitations.

One of the things that outraged many in the public was the successful use of such statutes to defend against claims. In some instances, legislatures revised the statutes and extended a window of opportunity for claimants to file claims. This is a complicated issue that has to be considered state by state. Some commentators say that church authorities were wrongly advised by lawyers to take a scorched-earth, hard line opposing claims of sexual abuse which included using statutes of limitation in defense, and that this made the Church look callous and hard-hearted.

I personally find this to be a very fine hair to split. Obviously the average pedophile is not going to have the same access to, say, 5 year olds as to, say 13 year olds. In this case, I believe they have to settle for what they can get access to. Just my opinion…

My “source” is the reports of convictions and the reported claims.
Many were “altar boys” or school age students, including high school. Additionally, there was minimal claim to celibacy or being single as factors. The perversion was/is, for the very most part perpetrated on young boys, not the prepubescent.
These threads in the past linked to many of these reports and also to the numbers or percentages of sinful priests. So far those percentages, as I remember, were actually less than the overall average - certainly no excuse, and as more cases are verified, that percentage will rise closer to the overall average, and maybe higher.
The involvement of our priests is what is so sad and disturbing. The cover ups are also a terrible blot on the priesthood. But we need to address the problem, not mis-describe it.
