I realize that there has been an awful lot written on this forum about Tom Cruise. But I thought that this article on Drudge was interesting.

drudgereport.com/flash3tc.htm

I think that Tom is loosing it. 😦
Yes, I believe I read the interview on Drudge…Tom Cruise is obviously not making much sense …weird is too mild a term

I am all for vitamins and minerals but he has lost his mind:eek: I am even weary of prescriptions but he has gone off the deep end:eek: I think we ought to start prayers for him:nope:

wow. now that is bizarre. Poor Katie. I wonder if she has ANY idea what she’s getting herself int.

Am I missing something? Where I would disagree with much of Tom Cruise’s positions on life, I don’t really disagree with him here. How he presents his position is very questionable but he has a very key point - that most of our mental problems do indeed require spiritual solutions.

So being a celebrity qualifies Tom Cruise to speak about psychiatry. Some cases of depression are medical illnesses – a psychiatrist is a medical doctor.
Gotta love Hollywood.

While I understand what you are saying, he still has a point. Do you think that every child ever started on Ritalin needed to be? Do you agree with everything that the medical community says and does? If so, we could be told that abortion is okay, after all it is all done by the medical doctors.

No, I don’t think that every child on Ritalin should be – from what I have heard, it is way over-prescribed. I don’t agree with everything the medical community says and does (and I’m not going to discuss abortion, because that’s not the topic here; the discussion was about psychiatry).

But there is nothing about Tom Cruise being a celebrity that would make me seek out or value his opinion on psychiatric issues. Nor is there anything about Scientology that would make me seek out Mr. Cruise’s opinions on those issues.

But that really isn’t Mr. Cruise’s key point. His key point is that most of our mental problems require Scientology to cure them, and that all of psychiatry is dangerous quackery.

Yes. But if we want to be fair and honest, we cannot criticize Tom Cruise simply for being Tom Cruise. If he has some valid points we cannot refute them.

I admit he is probably a bit over the edge in his assessment but modern culture is in serious trouble for seeking quick scientific fixes to spritual problems. He has the wrong belief system but if you replaced Scientology with sacramental Christianity, he would not be far from correct. And if we were to make such a claim, most would condemn the idea as crazy, yet it would still be true.

I’m not even going so far as to refute him – I don’t even want to listen to him discuss medical conditions.

Sorry, it’s just this thing I have about celebrities thinking that because they are rich/famous/whatever, that they are automatically qualified to speak out on fields such as medicine, and that we should want to listen to them. šŸ™‚

I don’t listen much to them either but if I’m asked… I have to be prepared to give an answer.

I do think Tom Cruise is weird But I don’t totally disagree with what he said. In extreme cases of course therapy and drugs are needed but overall I think it’s nonsense. I do think he came off as arrogant when he said he understands the history of Psychlogy and Matt doesn’t.

In this case…I may have to disagree with you…if you (Tom Cruise) are a kook…then any thing you say is suspect.

It is true people are overmedicated…or they are medicated too early before other alternatives are found.

But it is also true that if Andrea Yates had not gone off her medication her 5 children would most likely still be alive.

There IS a place for psychiatry and medicine despite the abuses out there and Tom Cruise is not qualified to question that no matter how much ā€œresearchā€ he has done.

His opinion has no affect on me.

Tom Cruise does not understand psychiatry enough if he says all use of drugs to control certain things is wrong. I am really disgusted with movie stars thinking they know everything. I have know many people that were helped immensely by drugs and therapy. It is not the answer for everyone.

What Tom Cruise said in an interview years ago was that he outgrew his learning disabilities. Anyone who has studied learinging disabilites knows you don’t grow out of them, but find ways to work around them. People with learing disabilities are average to above average intellegence, but the processing problems that are evident remain and the individual learns ways to accomodate them. Obviously people with learning disabilites can do amazing jobs and even invent things. Yet, Tom Cruise is not an authority on education or psychiatry.

Tom Cruise is an extremely successful actor. That is it.

Actually, I would be worried about a fellow Catholic that said all mental disorders could be cured with vitamins and will power, wouldn’t you. Certain mental disorders should be classified as physical problems as they involve brain chemistry. I would not tell a person with diabeties to neglect to take insulin why would I tell someone like Brooke Shields, who has a hormonal imbalance due to childbirth, that she shouldn’t take medication?

ALso, Tom Cruise was not talking about the fact that many people are overmedicated in our society. He was talking about taking **any **medication for mental disorders.

Not far from correct? Isn’t that just a nice way of saying ā€œwrongā€?
