I wish I could get mine into Steubenville…so far away…we don’t have the money…
Nothing is actually unique except that which is created by god. A beautiful building can be matched by other beautiful buildings. Now the grand canyon is unique as is yellowstone national park. Now of course, human beings are unique but they do share common characteristics based on socialization. Mormons and catholics are no exception. However, across the board, mormons in general have a great record when it comes to family values, moral codes to live by, and in enhancing positive aspects of human nature. That is unique. No other religion has as much impact on Mormon teenagers as the Mormon Church.
testify? I don’t think vandalism is taught in Mormon youth programs or at least it wasn’t 40 years ago.
That is not unique.
BYU is affordable for worthy mormon youth. Maybe the catholic church should have the same policy.I wish I could get mine into Steubenville…so far away…we don’t have the money…
He came to teach us how to love. And if we learn that lesson well, we will become nice people. Atheists can be wonderful people, especially those who have adopted humanistic behaviour.I had an atheist couple who were some of the nicest folks I’ve ever met.
Unflortunately, Jesus didn’t come to teach us how to be nice people.
Loads of scholarships are available, there’s always a way. One of the nurses I used to work with went there. She loved it.I wish I could get mine into Steubenville…so far away…we don’t have the money…
Two things can’t be unique at the same time, therefore Mormons are not unique; which is my point. Thank You.And in that, they are unique. But yes, such values and behavior can be found in other groupings among individuals.
No, they’re not. The southern Christians are well known for this, too.. However, across the board, mormons in general have a great record when it comes to family values, moral codes to live by, and in enhancing positive aspects of human nature.
And in that, they are unique. .
why me, I don’t really disagree with you here. Only will add, often that “great record” is a cultivated veneer. ie, not genuine.Mormons and catholics are no exception. However, across the board, mormons in general have a great record when it comes to family values, moral codes to live by, and in enhancing positive aspects of human nature.
I remember another thread talking about Catholic schools. It is of course okay for you all to charge less for your members but it is absolutely wrong for us to do so.BYU is affordable for worthy mormon youth. Maybe the catholic church should have the same policy.
Wouldnt work. How collected monies are collect and used are different for each.BYU is affordable for worthy mormon youth. Maybe the catholic church should have the same policy.
And why we have special collections, which monies are used specifically for X purposes. Such as Peter’s Pence, a collection which is specifically to support the Roman See.Wouldnt work. How collected monies are collect and used are different for each.
All tithing money given by Mormons and collected by wards is sent back to Salt Lake. From there a budget is sent for each ward and stake and then Salt Lake sends it back to them. Much of the tithing money, besides being re-allocated back to stakes and wards, goes to things like running temples, the realistate ventures of the LDS church, offset costs for BYU-I, BYU-H and BYU Provo.
For Catholics, monies raised by the parish stay in the parish for the running of the parish.
They dont get sent back to Vatican City only to be re-allocated.
I know in my parish, those families who have kids in the local Catholic schools (both elementary and highschools) can get help with tuition.
Unlike the LDS church, which has both as its ecclesial center in SLC, so its it’s fiscal center. Tithing goes back to headquarters and re-distributed.
Just doesnt happen in the Catholic Church. Even dioceses raise money separated from the parishes that fall within its boundries.
Fair point. And why we have special collections, which monies are used specifically for X purposes. Such as Peter’s Pence, a collection which is specifically to support the Roman See.
What makes a mormon youth “worthy”?BYU is affordable for worthy mormon youth. Maybe the catholic church should have the same policy.
That’s what we were told. What it comes down to is that if you’re white and male, there’s little to no money. Colleges will knock off enough money to make their cost the same as your instate college - almost. They know you’ll pay that 1 or 2 grand extra.Loads of scholarships are available, there’s always a way. One of the nurses I used to work with went there. She loved it.
Being ‘nice’…ok, just kidding. All BYU students (mormon and non-mormon) must follow the BYU honor code. What makes a mormon youth “worthy”?
They also (at least when I was there) had to live in BYU approved housing…(basically segregated for the singles)Being ‘nice’…ok, just kidding. All BYU students (mormon and non-mormon) must follow the BYU honor code.
Be honest
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Obey the law and all campus policies
Use clean language
Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Participate regularly in church services
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code
Students are required to meet with their bishop once a year, where it is the bishop’s responsibility to judge, via an interview, if the student is “worthy”. (This is normal for mormons, they have these meetings frequently throughout their lives.)

What does it mean to be unique? Human beings are not unique from each other. We all have the same human nature. But I do think that in mormonism, the good side to that nature is cultivated more than in other more traditional faiths, especially among the youth. It all comes down to what is a latter day saint and how that definition is cultivated. Here is an interesting article in the lds youth magazine, The New Era:Two things can’t be unique at the same time, therefore Mormons are not unique; which is my point. Thank You.
This cultivated veneer would place the mormons as the best actors in history. I have been around many mormons, and I can’t say that I have seen it often used. But we all have the actor in us.why me, I don’t really disagree with you here. Only will add, often that “great record” is a cultivated veneer. ie, not genuine.
Mormons also have scholarships too to support the less fortunate. But the tuition is rather low considering that BYU is a good school and one of the top schools for corporate recuiters. I think that the catholic colleges can do the same.I remember another thread talking about Catholic schools. It is of course okay for you all to charge less for your members but it is absolutely wrong for us to do so.
BYU is a good school. The tuition is low due to a few reasons. It’s not in a more expensive area of the country, and it is supported by the tithes of the LDS. It’s Board of Directors is the Qof12 and possibly the 1st Pres.Mormons also have scholarships too to support the less fortunate.
