Dianaid,

I don’t think you realize how you jump on people either.

It is a very serious stand to say there is no church after the Apostles…Jesus Christ is the last revelation of God, not Joseph Smith or Muhammed for that matter.

Alas, despite my attempts, that book is gone into obscurity…where it belongs.

Why do you have faith? What IS faith? Reason is all well and good…very well and good…but why do you believe one set of evidence and not another?
One advantage the Catholic Church has is that it DOES have evidence. There are documents and writings dating back to the time of the Apostles that affirm Catholic teaching and tradition. There are documents and writings from the early church fathers, doctors of the church, desert fathers, saints, etc that teach the same thing since the time of Jesus. Are there any documents, writings, etc dating back to the time of the Apostles that back up LDS beliefs? Is there anything prior to Joseph Smith? I mentioned in another thread that there is evidence of numerous other heresies the Catholic church dealt with. Are you saying that somehow, they were able to 100% stomp out all beliefs/teachings/documents/oral traditions/etc that relate only to LDS theology?

There is historical evidence that Jesus existed in Jerusalem. There is historical evidence that the city of Jerusalem existed. Is there any historical evidence that early Jews lived in America or that Jesus lived among them?

At first appearance to non mormons, it would seem that mormon scriptures contradict the Bible in many places. You claim that it is because we have misinterpreted the Bible. Do you have any historical evidence that back up your interpretation?

StevenVH…

Regarding my apology to you, I went back again as I was confused some more…this thread is really bringing about some reactions…

I was speaking to the person from Utahmissions who came to the church 10 years ago, not you.

Merry Christmas!

Dianaid made a reference to my use of baptism…

Baptism is becoming a part of the Body of Christ realized in the adherence of belief in One God, Three in One…the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed. Most protestants believe in the Holy Trinity which Baptism professes.

Jesus, deliver us from the spirit of confusion and anger…help us to dialogue and share with open minds and hearts.

Well, we believe that the CoJCoLDS was started by Joseph Smith the way you believe that the Catholic church was started by Peter.
For Catholics, it’s more correct for us to say that the Catholic Church was started by Jesus Christ. Peter and the other apostles began various local churches, such as in Antioch, Alexandria, Rome, Jerusalem, etc. Peter and Paul began the church in Rome, however Catholics believe that the Church (pre and post-Great Schism) included “sees”/churches besides ones started by Peter. The primacy of Peter doesn’t necessarily mean for Catholics that he started the Church.

Just an fyi.

This reminds me of when I visited my parents while they were on a mormon mission in the southern US. I went to their testimony meeting, where, a new convert to mormonism stood to say, he knew Joseph Smith was called by God to start the Mormon church. So, my dear mother stood up afterward to correct the poor fellow. Telling him Joseph Smith did not START the mormon church, he RESTORED it.

How did the ‘gates of hell prevail,’ if the church was restored?

Rinnie, I’ve had this conversation before. “Prevail” doesn’t mean that there would be no struggle, It doesn’t mean that there would be no defeats along the way. It means…to win, ultimately and finally.

It doesn’t matter HOW long the ‘gates of hell’ may SEEM to have the upper hand, if ultimately they are defeated, they did not prevail, did they?
Just that arument alone makes no sense, that Christians were gropping in darkness for 17 centuries, that the keys given to Peter were taken back to heaven until Jospeph Smith. IWhen you undertood what the “Body of Christ” means you would see it.

The restoration argument that your church was built on is foolish, like the man who builds his home on sand.

Two many scriptures, way to many Saints… “And lo I will be with you always until the end of the age” Or “I will not leave you orphaned” if you want me to post them all I will. Its just not one passage, its the whole Old and New Testement. Jesus would not leave His Church…He is the Church, we are of His body, the One body of Christ (Hard to understand if you do not beleive in the Trinity) You need the Holy Spirit in you to come to that.

When you study the foundation that Christ established for His Church all you find is truth. After I was baptized 11 years ago I created the [www.utahmission](http://www.utahmission/).com website because of the truth I had discovered. I clearly saw my fallen nature for the first time, I clearly saw Gods nature, why he has such great love for me, because of His love for Jesus. There is not a better breed of people who can do a better job than Jesus, we are all sinners.

It is my testimony that the LDS church brings false witness against true authentic Christianity. I believe with all of my heart, that because of those within this church they will, and our moving towards Christianity. But for today the false witness against the Church that Christ built remains by word and by deed. If you get a chance read this, it is by our Liturgist here in Northern Utah regarding Missionary work. It is so different than the LDS missionary work, this writing really hits the core of authentic Christianity.
utahmission.com/pages/Here_I_am.html

This is from the Catechism about bearing false witness, about truth
2476 False witness and perjury. When it is made publicly, a statement contrary to the truth takes on a particular gravity. In court it becomes false witness.276 When it is under oath, it is perjury. Acts such as these contribute to condemnation of the innocent, exoneration of the guilty, or the increased punishment of the accused.277 They gravely compromise the exercise of justice and the fairness of judicial decisions.

2477 Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury.278 He becomes guilty:
  • of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor;
  • of *detraction *who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them;279
  • of *calumny *who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.
2478 To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way:
Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.280

Well, we believe that the CoJCoLDS was started by Joseph Smith the way you believe that the Catholic church was started by Peter.
Yes, And My mistake. I stand to be corrected. The Catholic Church was not started by Peter it was started by Jesus Christ. It was build on Peter. Let me give you the words.

You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church. See there it is in the words of God. I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH. I must be more clear, my mistake.

Something Joe said on this site once, He said name any church and I will tell you the founder. The RCC was the only Church started by Jesus Christ.

Even your church was started by Joseph Smith:shrug:

How did the ‘gates of hell prevail,’ if the church was restored?

Rinnie, I’ve had this conversation before. “Prevail” doesn’t mean that there would be no struggle, It doesn’t mean that there would be no defeats along the way. It means…to win, ultimately and finally.

It doesn’t matter HOW long the ‘gates of hell’ may SEEM to have the upper hand, if ultimately they are defeated, they did not prevail, did they?
Thats just my Point, Jesus said that he promised to be with the CC until the end of time. The end has not come. Jesus has not left the church. The church is still here.

And the word prevail does mean will not be defeated.

The gates of hell have never prevailed. I think thats where you are getting mixed up.

Matt;16:18 And I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH and the gates of the netherworld SHALL NOT PREVAIL.

And the gates of hell have never had the upper hand. Not ever. For the gates of hell to have ever had the upper hand the HS would have failed, and that means Jesus left the CHurch. He never did. The CC has been here since Pentecost. I know you want to wish that fact away but history and the Church will not let you do that.

And why do you insist that the Church was restored. The church has never been restored, there was never need to restore something that has never been destroyed. Again if you misunderstood once of my posts lets get back on a understanding:confused:

Catholic -RCIA,

Thank you for your post and it reflects what I sense inside when I see Mormons teaching people that our church is not true…when it is…and the historical documents prove that. They do not look at them.

We look at Sacred Scripture from its whole content, and in the Sacred Tradition of the Church – how the apostles led us in their establishing our Church.

It is Jesus Christ Who sustains the Church, Who lives through through His Eternal Word and His invisible presence within all our sacraments that nurture us. This morning I wrote out part of the Liturgy of St. James the Lesser who was probably the first head/bishop of Jerusalem.

Mike Aquilina wrote on ‘The Mass of the Early Christians’. The Eucharist was always the Body and Blood of Christ. Our Catholic priests are totally different than Mormon priests.

The Apostolic Tradition states, 'Let everyone take care that no unbaptized person taste the Eucharist, nor a mouse or other animal, and that none of it fall and be lost. For it is the body of Christ to be consumed by those who believe and not to be treated lightly.

‘After the cup has been blessed in the name of God, you receive it as the antitype of the blood of Christ. So spill nothing from it. May no strange spirit lap it up because you despised it and rendered yourself guilty of the blood of Christ – like a man who despises the price for which he has been ransomed.’

The symbolism, images, words, actions of the Catholic Church in every day reflect the whole of Scripture and Tradition…the Church was never lost, there is nothing to restore because Christ is ever present, ever restoring us through the confession and remission of our sins, Jesus Christ who victoried over death for our sakesm He continuing on through us in the Eucharist, always present!

For whatever sins the Church has committed, we have asked His forgiveness and He has forgiveness us.

Dianaid. You asked a question I would like to address.

Why do I feel the CC is the one true church. Easy because Jesus said so.

He said I will tear down the temple and rebuild it in 3 days. He did his body was the temple.

Saul Saul why are you persecuting me. Who are you Saul answered. It is me JESUS THE ONE YOU ARE PERSECUTING. Now there it is you cannot separate Jesus from the CC. They are one.

Scripture will verify this.

Thank you, Rinnie…

Organizations that actively teach there was no true church after the apostles do not recognize that they are not only persecuting our believers, but that they are preventing their own members from partaking of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ that gives us eternal life.

Also no other church but the CC can give you the sacrament of Confession. Forgiveness for sins. And another reason I know I am in the one true Church, No other church even claims they can!

I will try to make time to share with you the text of the liturgy which seems to have originated in Jerusalem, although its early history is obscure…but its title ascribes to the work of St. James. It begins with the gathering and greeting of the priest, the deacon’s prayer for peace for all people of the world, with response of the singers, 'Holy God, holyl mighty, holy immortal, have mercy on us…

The next part of the liturgy is the priest calling down compassion and forgiveness for our sins…the liturgy then goes into the Liturgy of the Word with the readings of the Old and New Testament, to the dismissal of the unbaptized, to the Eucharistic Prayer to the Rite of Communion.

Sacred vessels were used, the cup/chalice and paten. The priest says the prayer before Communion: ‘O Lord our God, the heavenly bread, the life of the universe, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am not worthy to partake of your pure mysteries; but as a merciful God, make me worthy by your grace, without condemnation, to partake of your holy body and precious blood for the remission of sins, and life everlasting.’

‘How the first church failed’ (…if it depended on people, it would…)

Anyway, on that thread I did write out some parts of the liturgy…so you can read it there…

Rinnie,

We know the Lord has forgiven all our sins!
What I meant Kathleen is the CC is the only church that has the authority to act on behalf of our Dear Lord and offer absolution for our sins. No other Priest or preacher can say that. No other Church but the CC has the power of the HS to act in person for our Lord. I understand that the Lord forgives all of our sin, but if we are in mortal sin (which we don’t want to get into now) we need a priest!👍

Rinnie!..Yes, and they were given the power to forgive sins by Jesus Christ…

That is the difference…power…the power to bring us the Eucharist, to forgive sins, to heal and reconcile, to offer Jesus Christ as sacrifice for the atonement of sin…

A priest spends many years in the seminary and part of their training covers metaphysics…the study of reality, logic, reason.

Catholic-RCIA,

Your link was great and is exactly how Catholics tend to focus on their own imperfections and seek greater sanctity … in the ordinary duty of daily life.

I just don’t think the Mormons believe God forgave the Catholic Church. We are too big for Him???
