Then why did you conveniently take the word MURDER out of my post when you quoted me? Give me a break why me.

in Christ
Steph
Because I don’t consider you to be a murderer. Murder is too strong a word to be left in.

Dude, this is what you said:

*“Most women would certainly not want to raise the child born in rape or incest. The terrible memory would be too much to bear.

I can see the mormon position as the most humane in this case.”*

There is so much wrong with that comment that it’s pointless to even dissect it. Suffice it to say that if this is what you believe, and you really do indeed assist as a Lector at Mass, you are committing blasphemy.
You will need to speak to the women of Bosnia who were raped and became pregnant by Serb militiamen. Not to mention the women of Congo and other African countries who have been raped and became pregnant. It was not easy for them and many did not want to carry the baby to full term.

Absolutely.

What I think we have here is a case of LDS members not being willing to criticise LDS leaders. Because, once you believe that they are incorrect on an official doctrine, then the whole pack of cards comes tumbling down. As an LDS member you have to believe that official church doctrine is “infallible”.

Hal.
As a catholic you also need to believe the pope to be infallible when it comes to affairs of the RC church.

Absolutely.

But let us not lose sight of this fact: right now proving mormonism false is very much secondary to asking the LDS leadership to stop any allowance for abortion in any circumstances. Even if only 1 child were aborted under the mormon 4 acceptable scenarios, then it is 1 child to many. So, President Monson, elder Nelson, stop it. Change your stance - rule out abortion under all circumstances - please.

Hal.
And how are you proving Mormonism to be false? The lds church leaves abortion open for women in special circumstances but it does not encourge the abortion. It just says that it is not a sin if it occurs under those special circumstances. And it has been pointed out that the policy actually works quite well. The lds have less abortions than the catholics.

And Hal, would you want your daughter to die if her death could be avoided through an abortion? And in which case, she could have perhaps 8 or 9 more children?

So the fact is that Catholics have a few “grey areas” in the “Thou Shalt Not Kill” department, as well. So far, none of the Catholics posting here have tried to face them squarely. It’s much easier to vilify the Mormons for having grey areas.
True. It is much easier to vilify the mormons. The hardline posters also have not comments on why so many catholics have abortions, much more than the lds.

Exactly where are you getting your figures?

Don’t make such a general statement unless you have some sort of proof to back it up.

Your Mormon beliefs are totally at odds with core Catholic teachings and you should not be receiving Communion in the Catholic Church, let alone assisting at Mass. Per Canon 751 and 1364, you have excommunicated yourself, “latae sententiae,” for heresy.

This is a ridiculous comment (and a really lame one too), you obviously don’t understand ex cathedra and are just snarking on Catholics again.

I don’t know the source of your statistics and it’s a totally irrelevant issue anyway. When individuals sin, individuals sin as individuals; their actions are CONTRARY to that which is taught by the Church.

Canon 1398: “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs a latae sententiae excommunication.”

ABORTION. Jews are the most accepting of abortion, while Latter-day Saints are the least accepting. Less than one-fourth of Latter-day Saints favor abortion if the reasons are lack of money, being unmarried, or not desiring the child. The next-closest group is the Catholics, and more than one-third of them favor abortion in the above-stated circumstances. Sixty-seven percent of Latter-day Saints favor abortion if the fetus is deformed, compared with 74 percent of Catholics and 96 percent of Jews. Almost 90 percent of Latter-day Saints favor abortion if the health of the mother is endangered by the pregnancy. This percentage is similar to most other religious groups, although Jews and those with no religion have percentages of 97 and 95, respectively.

More about mormons and abortion:

Abortion
The official statement from the Mormon church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) regarding abortion is as follows: "In today’s society, abortion has become a common practice, defended by deceptive arguments. Latter-day prophets have denounced abortion, referring to the Lord’s declaration, “Thou shalt not . . . kill, nor do anything like unto it” (D&C 59:6). Their counsel on the matter is clear: Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must not submit to, perform, encourage, pay for, or arrange for an abortion. Church members who encourage an abortion in any way may be subject to Church discipline.

Church leaders have said that some exceptional circumstances may justify an abortion, such as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in serious jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have severe defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth. But even these circumstances do not automatically justify an abortion. Those who face such circumstances should consider abortion only after consulting with their local Church leaders and receiving a confirmation through earnest prayer.
When a child is conceived out of wedlock, the best option is for the mother and father of the child to marry and work toward establishing an eternal family relationship. If a successful marriage is unlikely, they should place the child for adoption, preferably through LDS Family Services"

Not quite. Prince Hal began this thread with a direct attack on the lds church. I am just countering his argument.

Again, the lds have a different understanding of creation and the preexistence. I have explained this already. That being said, the lds are not that tolerant of abortion, except if the life of the mother is involved.

Again, you are twisting things.

If you read your own posting, it talks about “accepting” abortions. Nowhere in the article does it discuss how many abortions are performed for any group, let alone Catholics.

Also, how convienient that you left off the fact that these figures were from samplings taken from 1972-1988. Hmm, 2008-1998=20. So, those figures are 20 years old or more. Not very current information now is it.

My suggestion to you is to find a study that provides figures regarding actual abortions done and not the “accepting”. Otherwise, don’t go quoting studies and statements that don’t support your statement.

I do not know the statistics you quote or whether they are accurate. But as one of the “hardliners”, because I was saved from being another one of those statistics when my mother refused to abort me, here is my answer:

Not everyone lives their religion. But that does not make the principle / command / law / admonition, any less true or from God.

My “direct attack” on mormonism is not against individual ordinary members of the church. It is against those who claim to be “apostles and prophets” as were Peter, James and John, leaders of the one and only true church of which Christ is the head.

God bless you,

Ha.

Mormons of all people should understand this (though it seems they do not). Of the reported 13 million LDS on earth, only about 4 million are the least bit active, and only about 1 million are temple-worthy. Does that alone make the LDS faith wrong?

BTW, the Mormons have 140 temples either existing, under construction or announced. But most of them are empty most of the time. Do they think that building more temples will inspire more people to become “temple-worthy” (which mostly means paying a full tithe)? It hasn’t worked so far.

Then what is it? I murdered my innocent child. I am not blameless, I am only forgiven by the Grace and Mercy of God.

Steph, you seem from your posts to be someone who has through experience received much light on this subject, and someone who has met Christ personally in receiving His forgiveness. Through your witness you are involved in saving unborn lives. For this God bless you. The LDS people must call abortion anything but murder otherwise their beloved prophet and council of 12 become murderers.

But who are the murderers ? Certainly not the 16 year old girl, who is frightened and is being coerced by those she trusts who stand in stewardship over her adults who claim to receive revelation from the God of Heaven. Perhaps we can give this “god” a name - “Molok” !

There are 50 million voices since Roe vs Wade who are silent no more because of people like Steph. When will the suited men who tell whimsical stories and crack poor jokes during conference in Salt Lake City hear the cries of these 50 million, and their mothers who too are scarred by what has happened.

Emotional ? Yes. Completely right and correct ? Yes.

LDS, do not add to the statistics. But more than this, reverse your neutral, cowardly stance towards protesting against abortion. Now that Brother Nelson has given the “once in a blue moon” talk against abortion, do you think that you are absolved ? No. Then join with us and with countless others of all faiths to stop this crime.

God bless you, and peace be with us all.

Hal.
