Church councls, Popes, a few illustrious Saints such as Aquinas, have all agreed that the gates of hell are heresies and heretics, with them in agreement that the meaning of the passage is that heresies/heretics will not prevail against the Catholic faith.
“Wisdom may fill the hearts of the faithful, and put to silence the dread folly of heretics, fittingly referred to as the gates of Hell.” -Thomas Aquinas
Ironically, Mormons who hang about here preach heresies on a regular basis. Freely, unfettered, with protection from Catholics while doing so. It’s quite remarkable, but I imagine, in the end, it must be frustrating to not prevail.
