I think that this explains mormon doctrine in a nutshell. It comes from the priesthood manual where mormon men and women are studying the works of JS.

Teachings of Joseph Smith

The gospel of Jesus Christ embraces all truth; the faithful accept the truths God has revealed and put aside false traditions.
“Mormonism is truth; and every man who embraces it feels himself at liberty to embrace every truth: consequently the shackles of superstition, bigotry, ignorance, and priestcraft, fall at once from his neck; and his eyes are opened to see the truth, and truth greatly prevails over priestcraft. …

“… Mormonism is truth, in other words the doctrine of the Latter-day Saints, is truth. … The first and fundamental principle of our holy religion is, that we believe that we have a right to embrace all, and every item of truth, without limitation or without being circumscribed or prohibited by the creeds or superstitious notions of men, or by the dominations of one another, when that truth is clearly demonstrated to our minds, and we have the highest degree of evidence of the same.”5

**In January 1843, Joseph Smith had a conversation with some people who were not members of the Church: “I stated that the most prominent difference in sentiment between the Latter-day Saints and sectarians was, that the latter were all circumscribed by some peculiar creed, which deprived its members the privilege of believing anything not contained therein, whereas the Latter-day Saints … are ready to believe all true principles that exist, as they are made manifest from time to time.”6 **

“I cannot believe in any of the creeds of the different denominations, because they all have some things in them I cannot subscribe to, though all of them have some truth. I want to come up into the presence of God, and learn all things; but the creeds set up stakes [limits], and say, ‘Hitherto shalt thou come, and no further’ [Job 38:11]; which I cannot subscribe to.”7

The key to mormon doctrine is in dark blue. This is what makes a great difference between mormon doctrine and catholic doctrine and the cause of much contention on these boards. Mormons have no catechism. But they do have a theology that can embrace truth. For mormons the catholic catechism would place limits on truth and knowledge.

The book Mormon Doctrine got into trouble with the mormon leadership because it attempted to limit truth by claiming a doctrine within a book.

yet mormon scriptures include the Doctrine & covenants…does that “place limits” on spiritual growth? how does the creed limit anything positive? it merely defines certain truths so that confusion is avoided and there is a foundation upon which to build our spirituality. Mormon theology can NOT embrace truth because it is founded upon multiple lies.

And a baptist can say the same about the catholic church. And then, what do we have? Just a lot of contention with the devil giving a cheer.

No. But it does contain the early organization of the church and what was happening to the early saints in the lds church. 🙂

In other words, he gave himself license to make-up his own religion and alter or “reinterpret” its doctrine as he saw fit.

so basically what is being said is, ok the the cafeteria is open here is whats out there take what you want leave the rest and it all true if you think it is. but the way we change the menu from time to time so be sure to come back and check to see what we’re serving today you might want to change what you took before.

you know you are not helping the LDS here you are showing more and more reason not to be involved with LDS at any level other than to try and lead them to Christ.

If you told me to put that passage into Alabama speak, it would say, “Hey, ya’ll, this is why we’re right and you ain’t: we can make this stuff (edit for moderator approval) up as we go. If you don’t like it, just come on over and kiss our {edit}.”

Did I misread anything?

Actually read it again. It says no such thing. What it does say is that churches with confirmed doctrine can limit their understanding of truth since if it is not in the book, it must be untrue. But the mormon understanding is quite open-ended. There is still truth to be discovered.

Yes, you did. The mormon stance is quite simple: Truth is yet to be discovered. But by placing a creed or doctrine in a book and saying ‘this is it’, the faith actually limits the truth to that book.

I am trying to show the difference between catholic and mormon understanding and why there is at times so much contention on this forum. Mormons and catholics come from different perspectives in regards to truth. For catholics, the truth is in the catechism. No more room for more truth.

But the mormons are more open-ended by claiming that more truth will yet be discovered.

So how does this not mean
are ready to believe all true principles that exist, as they are made manifest from time to time
that they can change it as they go along? Where is the proof that any of these new truths come from God?

Mormon teaching is always in flux under this doctrine, which leads to chaos. Being a Mormon on Monday and believing certain truths and having them change on Wednesday. So by Friday you don’t know what you believe, just intime to learn new truths on Sunday. (Something like sifting sands or maybe quicksand)

The Catholic Church teaches the truth which is true yesterday, today and forever. It is a firm foundation, where your faith is supported and deepened over time, so that you can draw closer and closer to our loving Lord, who is not a Lord of chaos and change. There are no limitations on how deep and abidding our Lord’s love for his children is, nor on truth. Our Lord taught the truth that abides, which is a safe haven for the soul. I believe my Lord, and He has no limitations.

May the Lord be praised, may He always be prasied.

so you propose religious free for all with everyone’s beliefs accepted…that’s heresy.

exactly. the D&C goes a long way in proving the LDS to be false. it shows just how JS manipulated people.

As per the topic. “Mormom doctrine in a nutshell”

Can you please explain the Official view of the Trinity? or more to the point, Where did God the Father come from in Mormom theology?

I ask this because two missionaries will be making a return trip to my home and I would like a clearer understanding of this doctrine. BTW, they are two of the nicest boys:thumbsup:

Be very careful.

You’ll be getting a lot of feel good “milk before meat” (heavier doctrines not taught until you join the “club”) and asking about “testimony” of the Book of Mormon, along with challenges to read it to attest to its authenticity.

I would ask if they have ever read the Qu’ran, and what did the Holy Spirit tell them? Muhammed claimed revelations, too, and also said G*d authorized his polygyny (including marrying his adopted son’s wife).

The Qu’ran also throws out the challenge: “If you don’t think this book is revleation, try writing this book on your own”.

Don’t give into these logical fallacies. There are many good articles his on responding to LDS missionaries.

So are you willing to deny the creed in order to agree with Joseph Smith about this? What part of the creed would you toss out?

If you are really Catholic you need to get in line.

No worries scipio337,I am SOLID in my faith:thumbsup:

I was asking more because when they return, I want to be ready with a response when they claim that God the FATHER has a physical body in heaven:eek:

I just need a very clear Mormom understanding of what they believe concerning the Trinity.

As for the Book of Mormom, I get more “Warm and Fuzzy’s” from reading Charlottes Web:D 👍
