I just had a visit from the Mormon missionaries. They have a book called the Book of Mormon and tell me that Jesus visited the Americas. They said the Native Americans come from Israel. I always was told in school they came from Asia.

the mormons are definetly very convincing, unfortunatly, their theology does not make sense. I thought many of the indians came from mexico?

It’s like pure Americanism if you ask me, like a faith for Americans!

There are quite a few bits on Mormonism here on the CA site, check out some of these links-

The Native American thing is one of the most controversial claims of Mormonism and there’s been lots of DNA studies on it. The DNA evidence is conclusive: 99.4% of Native American Indian DNA originated in northern Asia, the remaining 0.6% originated in either Europe or Africa and is found only in samples traced to the post-1492 colonial era (after Columbus arrived in the New World). So, what are the DNA experts saying?

In excess of a hundred and fifty tribes have been tested now, these are scattered all over north and central and South
America, even to Greenland. And from that survey, in excess of five and a half thousand individuals have been involved and have been tested, from those five and a half thousand, 99.4% of Native Americans have a mitochondrial DNA lineage that originated in Asia. There can be no question: 99.4%. The other 0.6% have either a European or an African mitochondrial lineage. The very tiny minority of European and African lineages that they do find came after Columbus. Currently on the available evidence there’s nothing to suggest a [Native American Indian] relationship whatsoever with Israelites.

Thank you for this information on DNA! By the way the Mormons are coming back on Wednesday night. They said that when the Spaniards came to America they were worshiped by the Native Americans because they had a white skin like Jesus. That’s why it was so easy for the Spaniards to fool the natives into letting them take over. The Native Americans thought the leader of the Spaniards was Jesus returning to them again.

Crikey that sounds a bit dodgy to me (in a racist sort of a way). Jesus was a Jew from the middle east, its highly unlikely he would have looked like a white european, his skin was probably dark olive, his hair black.

Smithsonian Institution Letter - Statement Regarding The Book Of Mormon

The Smithsonian Institution has never used the Book of Mormon in any way as a scientific guide. Smithsonian archeologists see no direct connection between the archeology of the New World and the subject matter of the book.

The physical type of the American Indian is basically Mongoloid, being most closely related to that of the peoples of eastern. central, and northeastern Asia. Archeological evidence indicates that the ancestors of the present Indians cane into the New World - probably over a land bridge known to have existed in the Being Strait region during the last Ice Age - in a continuing series of small migrations beginning from about 25,000 to 30,000 years ago.

Present evidence indicates that the first people to reach this continent from the East were the Norsemen who briefly visited the northeastern part of North America around A.D. 1000 and then settled in Greenland. There is nothing to show that they reached Mexico or Central America.

One of the main lines of evidence supporting the scientific finding that contacts with Old World civilizations if indeed they occurred at all, were of very little significance for the development of American Indian civilizations, is the fact that none of the principal Old World domesticated food plants or animals (except the dog) occurred in the New World in pre-Columbian times. American Indians had no wheat, barley oats, millet, rice, cattle, pigs, chickens, horses, donkeys, camels before 1492. (Camels and horses were in the Americas, along with the bison, mammoth, and mastodon, but all these animals became extinct around 10,000 B.C. at the time when the early big game hunters spread across the Americas.)

Iron, steel, glass, and silk were not used in the New World before 1492 (except for occasional use of unsmelted meteoric iron). Native copper was worked in various locations in pre-Columbian times, but true metallurgy was limited to southern Mexico and the Andean region, where its occurrence in late prehistoric times involved gold, silver, copper, and their alloys, but not iron.

There is a possibility that the spread of cultural traits across the Pacific to Mesoamerica and the northwestern coast of South America began several hundred years before the Christian era. However, any such inter-hemispheric contacts appear to have been the results of accidental voyages originating in eastern and southern Asia. It is by no means certain that even such contacts occurred; certainly there were no contacts with the ancient Egyptians, Hebrews, or other peoples of Western Asian and the Near East.

No reputable Egyptologist or other specialist on Old World archeology, and no expert on New World prehistory, has discovered or confirmed any relationship between archeological remains in Mexico and archeological remains in Egypt.

Reports of findings of ancient Egyptian Hebrew, and other Old World writings in the New World in pre-Columbian contexts have frequently appeared in newspapers, magazines, and sensational books. None of these claims has stood up to examination by reputable scholars. No inscriptions using Old World forms of writing have been shown to have occurred in any part of the Americas before 1492 except for a few Norse rune stones which have been found in Greenland.

[edit] Moctezuma controversy

Quetzalcoatl in human form, using the symbols of Ehecatl, from the Codex Borgia. It has been widely believed that the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II initially believed the landing of Hernán Cortés in 1519 to be Quetzalcoatl’s return. This has been questioned by many ethnohistorians (e.g. Matthew Restall 2001) who argue that the Quetzalcoatl-Cortés connection is asserted in no documents created independently of post-Conquest Spanish influence, and that there is little proof of a pre-Hispanic belief in Quetzalcoatl’s return. Most documents expounding this theory are of entirely Spanish origin, such as Cortés’s letters to Charles V of Spain, in which Cortés goes to great pains to present the naïve gullibility of the Mexicans in general as a great aid in his conquest of Mexico.
Much of the idea of Cortés being seen as a deity can be traced back to the Florentine Codex written down some 50 years after the conquest. In the codex’s description of the first meeting between Moctezuma and Cortés, the Aztec ruler is described as giving a prepared speech in classical oratorial Nahuatl, a speech which, as described verbatim in the codex (written by Sahagún’s, Tlatelolcan informants who were probably not eyewitnesses of the meeting), included such prostrate declarations of divine or near-divine admiration as,
“You have graciously come on earth, you have graciously approached your water, your high place of Mexico, you have come down to your mat, your throne, which I have briefly kept for you, I who used to keep it for you,”

With all of the information about Native Americans, how do Mormon missionaries get away with telling people such tall tales? It doesn’t seem as if they have anything to back them up. Don’t the Native Americans get mad about what the missionaries are saying about their ancestors?

I have a very limited knowledge of mormonism but from what I have heard and read, the Mormons have gained a few Native American converts because it recognises them as God’s Chosen People. I think I also remember hearing that a few Native American Mormons were quite angry when recently a decision was made to state that the Native Americans are only partly descended from the Israelites. But, as proven above, it is nonsense.

God Bless

The Mormon missionaries told me all the Native Americans were descended from people who came over on a boat from Israel. From what I’ve read in the Book of Mormon, there is a guy named Lehi who was the father of this group. They all came to America and then some of his children followed him while others rebelled against him. I can’t see anything in the book saying there were other people here when Lehi’s family arrived.

As I say, I know very little about the Mormons, we have almost none over here. I’ve only ever seen a Mormon church once here in England, and it looked more like a compound, high windows, very few windows on the first two floors, tough, tall fences. Didn’t look like a religious building at all, looked more like the Territorial Army base near my house. Even then most of the mormons inside were Americans living here.

Well, you certainly seem to have believed them or at least given their story some level of credence since you came here to ask if it was true. And, you are actually reading their fiction book-- the book of Mormon.
It doesn’t seem as if they have anything to back them up.
Well, no of course they don’t
Don’t the Native Americans get mad about what the missionaries are saying about their ancestors?
What can they do about it?

I think the idea that Native Americans were descended from Hebrews was believed by some at Joseph Smith’s time but it’s been debunked. I think there’s a chance the Phoenicians visited the New World, but the Native Americans certainly aren’t descended from them and they didn’t contribute much, though may have brought back cocaine and tobacco allegedly, though maybe these had Old World forms that are now extinct, but traces have been found on Egyptian mummies

Historically, every time Native Americans show how p----- off they are about the BOM, they end up getting revenged upon. Those Natives who have converted to LDS are generally people who have been generally well deculturated, or know nothing about pre-Columbian Native history specific to the Northeastern part of this continent. Maybe they have been shamed so much that they actually believe that their DNA will be physically changed by becoming LDS.

Given the attitude of white privilege in this country, and the hold that LDS and other racists have on the media, it is pretty well a hopeless battle at this point. 😦 It is really scary.

Are you sure those samples weren’t contaminated by cocaine-addicted archaeologists.

Hi Cat20064 and welcome to the forums!

The Native Americans had no clue about Jesus! One of the reasons that Columbus came here was to bring Christianity! It says so in his ship’s log. He found them practicing shamanism.

Google the facts and then confront the Mormons with them. Also ask them to explain the “Mountain Meadows Massacre” just to through some glue into the works.

Columbus was worse than the LDS!! You need to do your homework on the version of “Christianity” he brought to the New World. An excellent source of information is lascasas.org/ In my opinion, Bartolome de las Casas has been a long overlooked candidate for sainthood.

As for “shamanism”, number one, it refers to Russian witchcraft, such as that practiced by Rasputin. Number two, any religion which respects God’s Creation cannot be all wrong.

It’s been a while since I dealt with the LDS organization, but I believe they try to establish their legitimacy by making a connection with the Native Americans and the Israelites claiming the immigrants to America were part of the “lost tribes” of Israel.

As has already been well said by previous postings here, there is no truth to their claims.

When one is discussing information with LDS missionaries, there are some good resource materials from which to draw. One source is “The Kingdom of the Cults” by the late Dr. Walter Martin. I’m sure there are many other good references available from this website and others also.

Absolutely true. Any and all truths in any religion should be respected and accepted.

Columbus was a Catholic as far as I know, but I will research per your request.

I use shamanism to denote any religion of “natural” gods - i.e., uses a witch doctor, gods of sun, moon, rain, trees, etc…

Do you believe that Jesus came to America? I hope not! 😃

This entire topic seems like a complete setup to me, like it was trying to coerce the obvious attacks on the Mormon Church. Don’t play coy if you want to make a topic on the DNA BofM issue just go ahead and do it.

It just seems like a bad sales video or after school special where someone is asking such simple questions designed to elicit a general canned response.

You see it over on CARM “I have a Catholic friend at work, he says “it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of all human beings that they submit to the Roman Pontiff”. What is up with that? I thought Jesus said that HE was the way the Truth and the Life?” (queue the canned answers)…
