This question has really been bothering me. Why are there no Crucifixes or statues of Jesus in the Mormon Temples, but there are other strange things like, the all seeing eye, the bee hive, compass, carpenters square, moon stone, sun stone, star stone, and of all things, a pentagram ? I have tried to get the answers, but some people tell me it has already been answered, but I couldn’t find any info on it. Any info would be great!

Could some Mormon please answer these questions so I don’t have to go to an anti-Mormon website?

You know, there’s a thread around here that asks the same question, but I don’t remember where it is.

I do remember one of the answers by a Mormon member. If memory serves me right, it’s because Mormons do not wish to remember Jesus as dead or dying on the cross. They continue to claim he is alive and well, which other Christians believe as well-- you know, in Heaven.

I hope that helps. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I kinda had that discussion already with a Mormon about the cross. I didn’t find the answer totally satisfying but accepted it anyway. That leaves all the other images unanswered. Thanks

Yeah, it’s not very nice when you don’t get a straight, full answer from a member of some faith. Mormons, especially, want you to join before you get all the details… it’s like joining the Military. (No intentions of insulting anyone who’s served, by the way.)

The eye represents the eye of God watchng over us. The sun, moon and star stones are representative of the three degrees of glory spoken of in the NT. The square and compass come from the temple of Solomon and are symbols of the stone mason skills. The star is apparantly just a stylistic choice popular when the original temple was built in the 1840’s. It looks funny today because we are used to seeing a different version. The Nauvoo temple is supposed to be an exact reproduction of the original temple built in 1844. It was complete about 5 years ago. The original was struck by lightening after the Mormons moved from Nauvoo. A tornado finished demolishing it years later. A large number of the people who built the temple were from Europe and brought some of their construction ideas with them.

Mormons believe the cross represents mankind’s failure and resulted in Christ’s death. We believe Christ’s atonement happened in the garden of Gethsemene when He sweat great drops of blood. The bleeding was from the pain He suffered during the process of the atonement. It was there that He paid for our sins and not on the cross. We believe the spire represents Christ’s triumph over death in the resurection. We use that symbol on our buildings. The beehive is a symbol of industry and thrift.

For future reference you can go to www.lds.org for our basic beliefs. For more difficult discussion questions you can go to www.fairLDS.com. byub.org/home.asp which is the BYU website. There are many videos and round table discussions which are enlighhtening. You are correct in not wanting to go to the anti-Mormon sites. There is so much disinofrmation there that even I wouldn’t want anything to do with Mormons if I believed it all.

I have found that by and large most Catholic priests have a pretty good take on LDS doctrine however. They certainly are more intelligent than your-run-of-the-mill Mormon hater you get on the internet. Keep in mind that most anti-Mormons were excommunicated for cause. That does not mean that everyone who left the church was excommunicated. They left for all the usual reasons people leave any church. It is just the angry virulant ones are likely the ex’d former members. Mormons and Catholics have had a pretty good relationship over the years at least out here in the west. I think our greatest number of converts come from people with Catholic back grounds.

I don’t know where you got that my friend. It certainly didn’t come from anyone who knows anything about Mormon theology. Christ died on the cross and was resurected three days later. He assended into heaven just as it says in the NT. We certainly believe He is alive and well in heaven with God the Father.

so if a Catholic doesn’t answer a question, or not adequately enough for me, guess I’ll “have” to go to an anti-Catholic website to find out what Catholics really believe…

🤷 Part of my answer was from another thread which posed the same question; the answer came from a Mormon. The rest of the answer came from a Mormon classmate of mine.

Come on LDS Guy. Ricko and Blade just wanted to know. He was sophisticated enough to know he would get gobbeldigook at CARMS and MRM and others of that ilk. That says a lot about his willingess to get the straight poop and not some hate filled junk.

true, I wasn’t trying to come off as an *****-hole, but trying to show that we should all be held to the same standards. I hate when people refer to anti-Mormon websites and try to portray it as what we “really” believe, and I’m sure Catholics hate when people refer to Chick tracts for example (the LDS one is hilarious).

I go to CARM once in a while for a laugh.

Well, the problem is, it’s very difficult to find accurate sources. Just facts, and not fluff or criticism. We can either go to mormon.org, risking our sanity, or we can go to some anti-Mormon website, risking our decency. I personally find comfort from religioustolerance.org, but not many people at this forum find this appealing.

There are many other websites besides mormon.org, religioustolerance.org, etc. that have great descriptions. There are also books. Here are a few that I like:

fairlds.org/
fairlds.org/Restoring_the_Ancient_Church/index.html
jefflindsay.com/LDSFAQ/index.html
geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/2671/EC.html

Among others. There really is no reason to go to anti-Mormon websites, as they have TONS of misinformation.

Mormons believe the cross represents mankind’s failure and resulted in Christ’s death.
Christians believe it represents Christ’s victory over sin and death.

“Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory!”

Well I didn’t know yall believed that. I must say I am really surprised at the belief that the atonement was the sweating of blood. So what was the purpose of Him dying on the cross? Also, the bible says that Jesus said “The Son of Man must DIE so that sins may be forgiven”. How do you reconcile your belief with what the bible says?

Online dictionary
A·tone·ment reconciliation between God and people: in Christian belief, the reconciliation between God and people brought about by the death of Jesus Christ

What is being taught in the NT is not what Mormons believe.
The square and compass come from the temple of Solomon and are symbols of the stone mason skills.
It is a symbol straight out of freemasonry. It has been proven that freemasonry arose in the 16th century. There was not such symbol on the temple of Solomon.
The star is apparantly just a stylistic choice popular when the original temple was built in the 1840’s. It looks funny today because we are used to seeing a different version.
What version is that? It is ursula major, the big dipper. The constelation of the north star.

"The temple is boxed to the compass. On the west end of the Salt Lake Temple you see the Big Dipper represented, a very important feature (fig. 2). Like the Egyptian temple at Dendera, you had to have the Big Dipper there, representing the North Star, around which all things pivot (fig. 3). The main gate must face east. The sun, the moon, and the stars — the three degrees — are represented there. It is a scale model of the universe, for teaching purposes and for the purpose of taking our bearings on the universe and in the eternities, both in time and in space. And of course as far as time is concerned, we take our center there. We are in the middle world, working for those who have been before and who will come after. We are, so to speak, “transferring” our ancestors (we have their records — all quite recent; and let us remember that the genealogy records were kept in the basement of the Salt Lake Temple, where they belong) in the sense that the work for people who lived long ago makes it possible for them to project their existences into what is to come in the future.

We stand in the middle position. This earth is the Old English middan-(g)eard, the middle-earth. The markas &scheckecirc; u er .s ti of the Babylonians means the knot that ties heaven to earth, the knot that ties all horizontal distances together (cf. fig. 37H, p. 151), and all up and down, the meeting point of the heavens and the earth. It is the middle point at which the worlds above and the worlds below join. This scale model of the universe is the temple" (“Temple and Cosmos: Beyond This Ignorant Presence”, Hugh Nibley, 1992, Deseret Book)

Hmmmm, I wonder why God would have destroyed it like that! He does control our earth and has the power to destroy anything. You know, where I live it was devastated completely by hurricane Katrina. Not one house left standing on our beaches, or anywhere! It was complete devastation! We have casinos, big and beautiful casinos on our beach, and they washed up on the shores taking any house in its way, out! 4 casinos that did that! You want to know what was left standing, statues of Jesus, Mary, Saints!! Everyone at the time was talking about how those things survived; it was in the news all over. Not to mention all the coffins that were washed up from grave yards, some dating back to the 1800’s!! Even in those graveyards the statues were ok! I don’t think it was just a coincidence either! I think Mary was trying to open our eyes.
