if they could move past their mistrust and find out more about them, then they could have less inclination to marginalize and more inclination,
Since LDS have a doctrinally-based tendency to not confront their own leaders, mistrust is justified. Are LDS church financial records available for the membership review? Do LDS members know where their money is being invested?

The LDS faith is very small. It has fantasies of power, but that is all.

I would qualify this statement. In the Mormon corridor it really does have power and influence. It also was very powerful in the opposition to Prop 8 in California.

But the further you get away from the corridor, yes, it quickly loses influence never mind power.

The Bible warned us this would happen. Paul told his young protégé, Timothy, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths” (2 Tim. 4:3–4).

Catholick345,
Thanks for posting this. I hadn’t paid attention that the groundbreaking ceremony is this weekend for that new temple.

I’m hoping perhaps some Catholic leader from the Vatican may decide it will be a good idea to visit the temple open house when that time comes after the temple is built, and may become a bit more knowledgeable about LDS beliefs so as to not be so “afraid” of the Mormons’ worship of the living Christ, the Son of the living God and the One Savior of the world for all mankind. Becoming more knowledgeable about such things is a good idea.
Rest assured Parker. The Catholic leaders are not “afraid” of Mormons nor their worship of who they think they are worshipping. They have full knowledge of what you believe, else they would not have come to the conclusions they have.

Back in 2008 the Mormon (LDS) Church announced it was going to build one of their temples in Rome. It was the subject of this now closed thread on this forum. Today (October 23, 2010) construction begins, their Prophet will be in town to break ground on the new building. I am a Catholic, but excited to see this happen, their temples are beautiful buildings, and I am tolerant of other Christian religions. Plus apparently it will be clear across Rome from the Vatican so we don’t need to worry about that!

More info on the temple
I smell a rodent! First, Mormons are not Christian. Their “baptism” is not Christian. The One God has revealed Who the Christ is, and it is not the same “Jesus” that Joseph Smith wrote of or that Mormons believe in. Any organization that leads away from revealed Truth is something to lament, not to celebrate or tolerate. It is an acceptable and common practice (“holy lies”) to deceive in support of the LDS organization. But, just who is the “deceiver”?

One of the more underrated Bible passages. Thanks for referencing that one. 👍

I’m not opposed to Mormons proselytising or having their Church spread------but I do agree that we should not feel TOO chummy or tolerant with them.

Remember, this is, after all, an Extreme Version of Protestantism that teaches, among other things, that God once had a Human Body, that the Trinity are Three Separate Entities/Gods, that we will have our own “planets” after we die, and that Joseph Smith used to wear Magic Underwear. 😊

And BTW, Polygamy is allowed AGAIN after our Deaths and the Last days.

So again, let’s not get TOO tolerant here, Ok?

Magic Underwear.
Mormons don’t believe that the temple garment is “magic”. That is a name that those who have been hateful and spiteful who want to attack what they hold sacred.

They are no more “magic” than our own sacrementals are; IE our holy water, our metals of our saints etc.

They dont believe that they are magic and more than we believe our blessed metals or scapulars are magic.

I dont know if you are aware but you are breaking the 8th Commandment by bearing false witness.

You’re lucky you are saying that HERE, Po18guy. If you so much much as whisper “Mormons are Not Christian” publicly, you get your head handed back to you.

Mormons are not on the “we’ll ruin your life” mode of let’s say, Scientologists, but they ARE ferociously protective of certain assumptions about their faith.

Witness what happened when Al Sharpton said the same thing publicly----Mitt Romney, Glenn Beck, and half the media was tearing him a new rectum within hours. He even had to go on Beck’s show and overexplain himself all over the place.
So you are lucky, believe me. :o

The only problem is it is not the LDS belief that God is the one and only God. Or that Jesus was God himself, part of the Holy Trinity. I suggest, and I mean no offense, you look a little deeper and see for your self what the LDS chuch truly believes.

Perhaps start with the Book of Mormon, which tells the story of a lost tribe of Israel who sail across the ocean, from the middle east shortly before the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, to the new world. Upon arriving they break into factions of believers, pure descendants of those who traveled from Israel aka Nephites, and non-believers, mixed breed of indiginious americans and descendants of the beleivers aka Lamanites, the non-believers(Lamanites) become darker of skin and eventually kill off or absorb the white believers. I am not making this up, this is a fundamental belief of the LDS Church.

I certainly hope no representative from the Vatican ever does more than admire the architecture of this new structure.

Pax et Bonum,
Tom

I see that Mormons desire to follow Jesus, so in this sense I’d say they are Christian. Only they don’t know who He is, so that makes it all seem tragic to me. They don’t know who He is because of the false teachings of the church, and the so-called prophets, who they follow.

Pray for them.

I agree with those who have said it is doubtful a representative from the Vatican will be there. There are Mormon temples in largely Catholic countries, and I don’t know of any who have been given attention from the Catholic Church.

I’d also venture to say that Mormons would only want this attention in order to bring in converts.

thanks for the link. 15 acres seems like a big site, I’ll be curious to see what they do with it.
Lots of landscaping, water features, a big parking lot and homes for use by LDS leaders.

In my defense, all I can say is that I KNOW that the whole “Magic Underwear” thing is a reference to the Temple Garment. I forgot to add quotes to the term. And I also know that that the term is used pejoratively by Non-Mormons. I was simply trying to convey the fact that some consider the Temple Garment thing and other Beliefs of the Mormons to be “outside the norm,” so to speak. And I still think they are.

I did not in any way shape or form intend to “bear false witness.” I was simply using what is considered a “stereotype” about Mormons to point out out what I consider to be some of “illogicalities” of the faith and Beliefs. If I messed up, it was in not making clear in that’s what I was doing. 🤷

And there is nothing wrong with that. Catholics are seen by most other denominations (including Mormons) to have “weird, illogical” beliefs. There are some out there that think we are “cannibals.” Totally wrong, but I’m used to it and can take it. I use it as a teaching opportunity to explain the Faith and maybe get folks interested in the Truth. I’m sure Mormons here are not going to call for my head for it.

It’s funny that you have no problem with the other Mormon “beliefs” I listed but you zero in on ONE of them----which is in of itself so “unusual” that Folk find it necessary to parody in a mean and hurtful way. 😊

But allright-----if any Mormon here was offended, that was not really my intention. I truly mean that. any “false witnessing” that may have happened here was totally unintentional and not what I was intending to do.😊

Do you know any Mormons, though, Marie? I’m asking that seriously. It says you are a Latin Rite Catholic. Do you have a lot of contact with them?🤷

And I would say it is very UnChristian of YOU to publicly accuse me of being a Liar in a Catholic Forum such as this without at least trying to speak to me first. You could have PMed me first and “set me straight” that way first, you know. 😦

I think it was Paul who said something to effect that one does not confront one’s brother directly first. I’ll have to look it up but you know what I mean.

Exactly.👍

“afraid”, more implications??
It is a Mormon missionary tactic, to try an plant doubt. In this case, Catholics who are devoted to following Christ, do so by adhering to St. Paul’s teaching:

[bibledrb]1 Cor 8:1-13[/bibledrb]

ParkerD is trying to make people believe that our devotion to Jesus Christ is based on fear, not love, and therefore something to look at and leave…running to the arms of Mormon idolatry.

Mormons are always looking for ways to sink a hook. Just about every comment made here by ParkerD is just that. He’s hoping the Vatican sends people to eat the meat of Mormon idolatry, and throws in there that if they don’t, it is because they are fearful.

Of course we know that it is steadfast faith and adherence to Christ that saves us, not touring through a pagan temple.

I used to be LDS, that is why I called you out on it. 😉 I take it you missed my post earlier in the thread that I used to enjoy the peace and quiet of the celestial room. So that means I used to wear the temple garment.

I will call out anyone who misrepresents or denigrates either Catholic or Mormon teaching and doctrines.

And I disagree with your view that I called you a liar. What I said was that I didnt know if you were aware that you were baring false witness. Which means I gave you the benefit of the doubt that you may have spoken in ignorance of not knowing the facts 🙂

I can see where, though, if I can added an emoticon that may have come thru more clear.

As much as I admire your tolerance, I truly do, I must simply state that the Holy Mother Church does not view the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a fellow Christian religion. Holy Mother Church considers only those faiths which can state the Creed without alteration, and with all sincerity, as Christian. As the LDS Church cannot do so, they do not belong to the christian faith.
If you disagree with this, and please no offense intended, I would suggest doing a little research into what the LDS church actually believes. I have no issue with Mormon’s on a personal or moral level. My best friend growing up is and was a Mormon, his family was always open and warm despite the vast differences between our theological views. That said, their beliefs go directly against the central tenant of the Judao-Christian faith family, that God is the One and ONLY God.

So as far as the building of one of their very beautiful temples in Rome, while I believe in tolerance, I personally find it rather depressing to see the city that has served as the center of the Catholic world for over two millenia, is so secularized as to have room or enough interested people to justify the building of a LDS Temple there.

Pax et Bonum,
Tom
I agree with this!

I was just in Rome for the first time and I can’t tell you how sad this makes me too. All the beautiful ancient history of our Catholic faith is in this eternal city.

I hear what you are saying. But Mormonism is not a threat to the Church. Esp in Europe.

Secularism, relativism, and the like are the real threats.

I dont know what the retention rates of Mormon converts are but it’s very small. Most converts leave within a year.
