I said the same thing on the other thread and was asked by one Mormon poster “Why do you feel it is an affront to your Church”?

I didn’t get time to reply before the thread vanished. The best way I can think of describing this is that it is like having the guy that is out to steal your girl move in next door and then invite you over to a house warming party. I might come over to knock his teeth down his throat (in a charitable manner, of course) but I’m not going to go to wish him success.
Seriously a Mormon Temple in Rome Italy. Too bizarre! BTW I’m from County Mayo as you can see by my moniker. Going home next week for a short visit and can hardly wait. Hope it doesn’t rain too much.

I have no idea where County Mayo is but I hope you have a nice visit and stay dry.

To the magical land of “man-made” religion with innovate teachings, doctrines, uncivilized folks; who met Jesus plus who had many wives on unexplored planets where one is a god…:tiphat:
In a nutshell.

Mormons have chapels and temples. Chapels or Meetinghouses are where they go on Sundays for worship and learning, as well as various activities and classes throughout the week. Temples are where they go for what are regarded as very sacred ordinances, and it is believed that God’s Spirit dwells there in a special way. Only Mormons holding a “temple recommend” (a card signed by church leaders that basically means that they have been found, after an interview, to be believing and practicing Mormons, and are “worthy” to enter the temple) are able to attend after it is dedicated. They do eternal marriages, washing and anointing, the Endowment (basically a presentation of the creation and other events, they make various covenants, and symbolically enter the presence of God), and ordinances for the deceased (they believe that you can offer the same ordinances, like baptism, confirmation, ordination, etc for those that didn’t have the opportunity to receive them in this life, and that’s done in the temples).
I am sooooooo glad we do not need a recommend to enter our church’s. They would be pretty empty if that happened to be the case. I am a sinner. So glad we can enter whenever we want.

You make a great point. We don’t go to Church because we are holy, we go because we are sinners. And to have other humans judging the state of your soul and your level of righteousness is to take the place of God as judge.

Only for those ordinances. You do not hold Sunday services there. And only Mormons with a valid current Temple Recommend can enter.
A few temples have assembly rooms as well. These are used for Solemn Assemblies. Solemn Assemblies have been held on Sundays.

The Salt Lake Temple has a Holy of Holies.

In the Jewish Temple, God dwelt within the Holy of Holies. In the Catholic Church our Tabernacle is the Holy of Holies because God dwells there as well. What is in the LDS Holy of Holies?

Probably more chandeliers. 😃

There is none. It is a place for secret ceremonies, less creepy after they stopped making everyone vow to kill and be killed by gruesome manners

You took a vow to kill someone? Where did that tradition come from?

Another example, then, of co-opting Jewish and Christian terms and then giving them a completely different interpretation. This is one of the problems in communicating with the Mormon world.

I have this problem when talking to my 86 year old LDS friend. It is like we are different planets at times.

I think it stems from their abhorrence of philosophy in general where terms such as “being” and “person” and “divine”, for example, are specifically defined in order that we might have a common understanding from which we base our reasoning. When “red” means “blue” to the person with whom you are speaking it is impossible to have an exchange of ideas.

Exactly Steve. We have been friends now for many, many years, and she is still trying to convert me. I told her to tell her family to not even think about baptizing me after I am dead.! Just another major point of our discussions.

At 86 years old, I think my tact would be just to let her know that you love her and that you pray for her. Show her your faith by your actions. She does not hear your words.

Historically speaking, I think you’ll find that Catholics tend to be the ones opening doors in other countries. Including the hostile ones.

Protestants and mormons tend to come after.
Catholic missionaries tend to go where others fear to tread. Then, after all the heavy lifting has been done, everyone else comes in riding on the coat tails. Just the way it is…

The lds "prophets"blood oaths. You vowed to kill people who broke temple vows and/or to allow yourself to be killed. The manners of killing including cutting of throats and cutting open your stomachs…

:bigyikes: Really? Is it common practice still? Yet they claim to be “restoring” Christ Church?
