Mormonism - A Catholic Perspective

To me, it sounds like you are equating Christianity with Catholicism?
Of course, you do know that the Catholic Church was the original Christian Church. (Matthew 16:18) Later on, believe it was 1154, some–not all of the Eastern branch split (and some came back, but that’s another story.) Then in the Protestant Revolution in the 16th century, the Protestants came into being when they too split from the Church. (That seems to explain the Bible–which is actually a Catholic book, and belief in the Trinity, and their historical roots.)

As to what your Prophets have said, please, please do some research. You’ll find that not too, too long ago (I think it was years before the LDS revelation allowing blacks to have the priesthood though) some LDS Prophets and General Authorities called the Catholic Church “The Great Abominable Church” and the old Endowment portrayed Protestant Ministers as the devil’s lackeys. (Thankfully, the new Endowment doesn’t contain that insult, but history notes that, unfortunately, it was there.)

Again I say that whether LDS can be considered to be Christian, depends on your definition of “Christian”. LDS core beliefs are not Christian–they are LDS. There is nothing wrong with that. (For instance, I wouldn’t dream of calling a Jew a “Christian” even if he believes in one God and is a humanitarian, nor can I call a Muslim a “Christian” even if he believes in one God, that Jesus was a great teacher, etc. They are what they are. They simply don’t share certain core beliefs.)

Why do you say they are not christian since the very name of their church is “The church of JESUS CHRIST of latter day saints” ?? They believe in God the father, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy spirit or Holy ghost as they call him. So what makes them not christian ?
mea,
What scriptures can you provide with your statement?
Please use the christian Bible.

I’m sort of jumping into the middle here, but there are some things that need to be said and as most of you have never been “Mormons” then you don’t know what they believe. I was a very active Mormon for 22 yrs and I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are NOT Christians!
  1. To begin with, when they say that “they believe the Bible to be the word of God,” they swallow the rest of the statement that goes like this: …“as far as it is translated correctly.” I would say that pretty much speaks for itself!
  2. In all the years that I was a Mormon, they never referred to Jesus as Jesus, but rather as “The Christ.” And don’t listen for any discussion on the blood of Jesus because it just wasn’t there. Maybe it is typed into a book somewhere, but at Church and in speaking to the members, “the Blood” was NEVER discussed!
  3. In the Bible the Father is spoken of as “Spirit,” while the Mormons believe that He has been seen by men, along with Jesus, as a personage of flesh and bone. Now, Catholic or Protestant, we do NOT believe that the Father has a fleshly body!
  4. I also had a Mormon Bishop tell me once that I could go to Hell for drinking a “drop” of coffee, not just a cup of it. Brothers and Sisters, does sound like our beliefs?
  5. And what about their beliefs that “God” lives near the planet “kolob” and with wives populates his own worlds? AND that we can go on to become Gods and with a spouse, populate our own worlds? Ladies, beware, only your husband can lead a harem of wives…you get only one husband,…sorry. One of you earlier spoke of this belief and not one of you replied to it. Surely you Catholic’s and or Protestants recognize craziness when you hear it; or are we slipping it under the rug and not seeing it for what it is?
Why go on to discuss anything else when right here we can see for ourselves that we have totally different beliefs? If the above things are their beliefs, then, they speak for themselves. Correct? They have a perfect right to their beliefs, but not to represent it as Christian!

When you say we are not Christian, you mean that we do not believe the trinity. We believe in God the father, Jesus Christ his son our Savior, and The holy ghost as being 3 separate individuals. They can not possibly all be one ? Do they just talk to themselves in the scriptures ?? “Forgive them father for they know not what they do “? He is talking to himself ? forgive them myself ?
  1. To begin with, when they say that “they believe the Bible to be the word of God,” they swallow the rest of the statement that goes like this: …“as far as it is translated correctly.” I would say that pretty much speaks for itself!
This is correct, we do believe the bible to be the word of God, as long as it is translated correctly ! there are new versions of the bible printed all the time by different means. We use the King James Version the same as Catholics do and we believe those words to be the Word of God.
  1. In all the years that I was a Mormon, they never referred to Jesus as Jesus, but rather as “The Christ.” And don’t listen for any discussion on the blood of Jesus because it just wasn’t there. This I do not believe, I have never even heard of him being called just “The Christ” !!! He is Jesus Christ our Savior, or Jesus, or Christ but not “The Christ”… The blood I do not know what you are refering to other than we recognize the blood that was shed for us when we take the sacrement and drink the water ??

3.In the Bible the Father is spoken of as “Spirit,” while the Mormons believe that He has been seen by men, along with Jesus, as a personage of flesh and bone. Now, Catholic or Protestant, we do NOT believe that the Father has a fleshly body!

Isa. 6: 1, 5
1 In the year that king Uzziah died I **saw **also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
Acts 7: 55-56
55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Scripture confirms The seeing of God and his son Jesus Christ. Unless you do not believe the bible to be the word of God ?? I can go on but 4 scrips is sufficient
  1. I also had a Mormon Bishop tell me once that I could go to Hell for drinking a “drop” of coffee, not just a cup of it. Brothers and Sisters, does sound like our beliefs?
Brothers and Sisters ?? are you still in sacrament ? IF this were true then Your bishop had short comings just as the history of the Popes do, and the priests that molest little boys. Nothing different here.

You are taking a very big short cut in explaining the plan of salvation, the pre existence and what lies ahead for all. I have not heard of any plan from the Catholics or “Christians” as to the after life ? what we all just hang around on clouds and eat bon bons for eternity ?? This is a very boring existence to think of FOREVER !! what is the afterlife plan ??
You are an uncorrect example of what a mormon is. Very sad.

If you could hie to Kolob in the the twinkling of an eye, would the atmosphere be breathable without a space suit?

What is the concept of the “Heavenly Mother?” Is it considered orthodox LDS belief?

If you could hie to Kolob in the the twinkling of an eye, would the atmosphere be breathable without a space suit?

The concept of Kolob is that before the Fall of Adam, we were with God our Father in Heaven every day. We enjoyed the Garden of Eden Paradise. When Adam fell the planet was tossed into the space it sits in now. Far from the existence of God. In these last days when The Savior Jesus Christ returns for the second coming and we have the millenium when Satan is bound for 1000 years, the planet is then tossed back to the paradistical state it was before. Thus those that are still alive will be changed in a twinkling of an eye.

What is the concept of the “Heavenly Mother?” Is it considered orthodox LDS belief?
We believe in a Heavenly Mother, She is not talked about in general or addressed nor prayed to. We believe God the Father holds her in the highest esteem that she is not put out in the open for man to slander and use her name in vain as they do the Lords name.
So what was that almighty plan of salvation ? Im waiting to hear what happens in the hereafter ? Bon bons forever or is there a plan of progression ?

Bon bons forever or is there a plan of progression ?
No bon bons–not in Christian doctrine (don’t know where you get that) and certainly Christians do not believe that there is an eternal progression (God has a god and god’s god has a god and he has a god and on and on back in time…and it is not Christian doctrine that humans can look forward to being gods too). That part sounds more like the old science fiction show Battlestar Gallactica!

Then what is the point ? If we were in heaven to begin with with the one almighty trinity , we loved him/them and enjoyed serving him/them etc. etc. why did he create this earth, come to it as Jesus, die and return as God and for what ? to judge us to come home to him again to do what ? um live with him forever, serving him and loving him the very things we were doing before ? and this we will do FOREVER ? why what was the point in the whole process ? Was he bored and nothing to do ? come on what is the plan he has for us ?

I’m having a difficult time knowing who is Mormon. 🙂 Your writing ,. but none of it makes sense.
Kolob? god’s in heaven? what gods?

The Bible the inspired word of God, reads in Duet.6:4 “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.”
There is one God.

meaprilrain,

This will probably come as a total surprise to you with all that you have taught in the Mormon church, but eternity isn’t about you,…it is about God and being in His presence.

None of us have the “411” on it, but as it has to do with THE Creator of the Universe, there is no limit as to what “being in His presence” will entail. Our puny imaginations can’t begin to approach the infinite possibilities!

Psst!..meaprilrain, I forgot to share these:
  1. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
    (John 1:18)
  2. Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.
    (John 6:46)
  3. No one has seen God at any time. If we love another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.
    (I John 4:12)
  4. Then He said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But He said; “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” And the Lord said, "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. “So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back but My face shall not be seen.”
    (Exodus 33:17-23)
As you said, four examples should suffice.

I am a Mormon and I would like to just clarify a couple of things that were stated in the previous post. First of all, we are Christians. The official name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We believe absolutely that it is only through Christ’s atonement that we can return to dwell in the presence of God. We absolutely believe that Christ is the ONLY way. Indeed, He is the way the truth and the life, NO man cometh unto the Father but by Me. Secondly, the Word of Wisdom states that we should “abstain from alcohol, coffee, tea, and other harmful drugs”. The Word of Wisdom never specifically mentions abstaining from caffeine. The reason I mention this is because I have served in the bishopric in my congregation and have administered temple recommend interviews and know for a fact that a person can be consuming caffeinated beverages (except for coffee) and still qualify for a temple recommend (required to enter the Mormon temples). That being said, caffeine is a harmful drug and we would all be doing our bodies a favor by abstaining from it. It is just that the Lord has not forbidden caffeine specifically (according to the standard temple recommend interview questions provided by the Lord through the Fist presidency of the Church and the Quorum of the twelve Apostles).
Hello, if I may ask, why abstain from tea and coffee? And it doesn’t have to do with the caffeine, so I would guess that soda pop would be okay, but decaffeintaed coffee and tea would still NOT be okay, right? I always knew that was a mormon teaching, the no coffee and tea thing but no one’s ever been able to tell me why. Thanks!🙂

Not Mormon, but daughter converted so I’ve had to deal with the Word of Wisdom which they have to follow (they are actually questioned on it when they go to renew a temple reccommend so they can go to an LDS temple–not the ward meeting house.) The Word of Wisdom actually is against hot drinks. For some odd reason, the Mormons equate that with all coffee and tea whether hot or cold or herbal or decaffeinated. (However, hot chocolate and any chocolate drink if it doesn’t have coffee in it is okay even though it is full of caffeine.) So you see that caffeine is not forbidden, although there are some LDS that forbid even soft drinks that have caffeine. (Daughter says that it has something to do with the covenants she took at her Endowment.)

Oh BTW, wine (and there are some LDS that include cooking with wine or wine flavorings–I know my daughter is one) is also forbidden. (She used to make really great cookies that had a touch of brandy flavoring, but no more, and she takes out the wine flavoring in her stews and gravies. I guess there are no great chefs among the LDS.)

That, along with the deliciousness of a church fish fry during Lent is why I will ALWAYS be Catholic.👍

As with most threads having to do with the LDS, this one has gone off target into a scripture and testimony flailing match. The original question asked in post #1 was, has anyone read the book? I ask that question again, in hopes someone has.

Of other books: Fr Taylor’s book is an interesting saga of trying to reconcile a family split in half by the cultural experiences of Mormonism. IMHO it falls short on the theological issues.

Isaiah Bennett’s book Inside Mormonism is a classic. It provides scriptural and traditional basis for refuting the LDS claims on the Great Apostasy, the Restoration, and the reliability of personal testimony. In our parish this book has been used as a text to good ends with some of our RCIA inquirers.

Yet to be addressed in the Catholic press are the concerns raised by books such as Robert L Millet’s The Mormon Faith: A New Look At Christianity in which (1) LDS ordinances are portrayed as the perfection and restoration of Christian sacraments, (2) the Catholic Church continues to be portrayed as an apostate usurper to the faith, teaching, and Tradition of the Apostles, and (3) divine Grace is reduced to a formula covenant in some of the clearest language I’ve seen anywhere.

Millet is former Dean of Religious Education at BYU. Has he been made a General Authority? LDS, do you consider his words authoritative? Would the ideas in his text be a good direction for this thread?

BTW Christians believe in one God. (A teaching from our Jewish heritage. See the Shema: "Hear O Israel, our God is one God.) The LDS? I believe that in one of JS’s visions, he claims to have seen God and Jesus, and everyone of LDS males are destined to become gods themselves! Then there’s the fact that Christians believe in the trinity–one God in three persons (in the Bible, a foretaste of this doctrine is Genesis 1:26 “And God {singular} said, 'Let us {plural} make man in our {plural} image” and the fact that the Hebrew word for God is elohim which is actually plural even though we know that the Jews worshipped one God.)
This happens to be one of the ones that baffles me the most. I am so sincere but honestly, There is only like 3 or 4 scriptures that have the terms " I are one" Yet there are hundreds of scriptures that refer to God the Father , His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy spirit as being complete and seperate individuals or spirits or entities or whatever you want to call them.

Stephen in Acts
Acts 7: 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Matt 3: 16-17
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

How can you see and hear seperate people that you claim are one individual ? Stephen SAW God the father and JESUS standing right next to him? that is 2 people ?

John 17 : 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

so then if God and Jesus are one and they are Lord because they are in each other as one, then we also are GOD and Lord as we may be one with them also ??

John 14 : 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

This is ANOTHER comforter, not the same person.

Do you think maybe to be one it just means of one goal and one mind, like when you are married you are no longer seperate but ONE flesh ? you are not really one flesh, but a marriage of one. The Godhead of 3 seperate individuals is really just one in spirit and mind, goals being reached of the Fathers will .

1 cor 12: For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
Romans 12: 4-5 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Luke 23: 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

If Jesus is God then why would he have to ask his Father to forgive his transgressors ? and why would he commend his spirit into his own hands ?

This makes absolutley no sense, of all the differences in religion this one tops it that God the Father and his SON Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are all one person !

anyone please explain in english understandable terms !

God can do anything. He can appear as one or three. He is God the creator of all things. Jesus is God who came to earth to die on the cross for our salvation. The Holy Spirit is the comforter.
You should pray and as the Lord to reveal his truth to you.
I personally just accept the fact that God can do anything and be anything. Just because we as mere mortals can’t grasp it, doesn’t make it false or a lie.

:I was raised a mormon. And I left when it dawned on me that there was a symptom of ‘parroting’ .There is a meeting called sacrament. And one thing that everyone repeats over and over and over and over (ad nauseum) is “I know without a shadow of a doubt that the church of jesus christ of latter day saints is the only true church” Listen to that for all your life from the time you are a little child. I believed it. I was absolutely appalled when people said I wasn’t Christian.Sometime around the age of 14 I started questioning why this was that people said I wasn’t Christian. So, I became a Wiccan.
How did you accomplish the transition of believing in 3 seperate persons and beings into believeing in the trinity ? Mormons are taught God the Father , Jesus Christ his son and the Holy Ghost are 3 complete indiviuals different from each other ?

Why do you say they are not christian since the very name of their church is “The church of JESUS CHRIST of latter day saints” ?? They believe in God the father, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy spirit or Holy ghost as they call him. So what makes them not christian ?
I am a mormon, though I now believe it to not be the “true church”. I was a Mormon Bishop for 4 years and still hold that office and a member for over 20 years. I mention this perhaps to show that I have some knowledge and understanding of mormonism.

To answer your question. If you mean by “Christian” someone who practices the central teachings of Christ - loving God and neighbour, doing good works, honouring father and mother and bringing up moral families, then yes, Mormons are Christian.

However, if you are a Christian only if you believe in the actual Christ, then no, Mormons are not Christian. Their understanding of Christ and God is so alien to tradition and to the Bible, and indeed to commonsense, that they cannot be said to believe in the true Christ and therefore they are not Christian in that sense.

Mormonism’s Christ was born of a physical sexual union between God the Father and Mary - even though she was betrothed to another (therefore this was indeed adultery). Mormonisms Christ was married to Mary and Martha (at least). Mormonisms Christ (the 2nd member of the Godhead) was created by God the Father and one of his wives. God himself is an exalted man, one who lived on an earth of his own and grew up like we are doing now, but was advanced to godhood, by his god.

So, it depends which way you mean “Christian”.

God bless, Hal.

meaprilrain,

Before you begin to understand Catholicism, you have to know that we and the LDS have different definitions for some of the same words. Very different!

I need to go to bed, so I’m too tired to dredge up what some of them are. Sorry; maybe someone else will.

You have gathered some odd ideas of the Church.
The Catholic church claims that there is only 1 person on the face of the earth to receive revelation from God at any given time, thus the Pope.
We don’t claim that. We believe that general revelation ended with the New Testament. We believe that people can receive private revelations. These are binding only on those that receive them. What the Pope has that is unique is the Keys to the Kingdom, handed down from St. Peter. (More on this later in my post.)

Also, you misunderstand Papal infallibility. “Infallible” means “teaching without error;” the kind of thing that becomes dogma. The huge majority of Papal teachings are not infallible, and aren’t dogma. There have been only two or three infallible teachings in the past 150 years. (I say “two or three” because Pope John Paul II made a statement that may or may not be infallible.)
Now how could the Catholic church have gone through 3 or 4 popes by now between 64AD to 100AD when John died, claiming to have authority from Peter, While Jesus’ most beloved apostle John was still receiving revelation and writing gospels from the Lord
Because St. John was not the Pope!

The Papacy began with the Bishopric of Rome, because Rome was then the center of power. St. Peter was the first Bishop of Rome, and he passed that position to St. Linus, who passed it on to someone else, and so on. Yes, there were 5 Popes during St. John’s lifetime.

Jesus gave the keys to St. Peter, not to all the Apostles. In Mt 16:19, Jesus says “you.” In English, that word can be either singular or plural. In Greek, there is one word for the single “you” and a different one that means more than one “you.” Here, Jesus is using the singular word, which means He was talking to St. Peter, and not the rest.
up until 1274 AD Infant baptism was not required or needed. Then all of a sudden it was or an infant was denied the sight of God, or “the beautific vision” What happens to all the souls that died before the year 1274 AD without baptism ?
I think you don’t know what the Beatific Vision is. I didn’t myself until recently, when I looked it up in Ott’s book, Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma.

We don’t believe that God has a human body. (I know you disagree, but let’s not get sidetracked on that right now.) Here on earth, we can only see God through His creation, and through the eyes of faith. (“Through a glass darkly.”) Once in Heaven, we will be able to see Him exactly as He is. It is this vision that is denied to the innocents who die without baptism. There’s nothing that says they won’t be happy, just that they will still see Him as we do in this life. Certainly God will be able to see them!
Your new Pope now claims that again baptism for infants IS NOT necessary !!
Where? I have not heard of this. Can you give me a link?

God bless you,

Ruthie

Don’t give up on your daughter Sis 54. Have her read the book by: Scott & Kimberly Hahn called ROME SWEET HOME. It is an excellent book of a pastor’s son who converts to Caholicism. It compares his religoin to our faith, and tells why the difference! Why he made the conversion. I loved it.— There is also a video called “The God Makers”. I don’t know where you can get it,but I got mine years ago, from the Catholic Library. —
I have been a Catholic all my life, and hope to receive my last Sacrament at my death,to be buried as a Catholic. I read this book, and it has helped me to be able to answer and understand more about my religion as I try to learn, what I have missed in my growning years. Perhaps Christmas time is a good time to share this book with your daughter,if you feel you may be able to?. – So sad to say,:😦 I was raised in a small town with Mormons!!! . )As a child they made my life so misserable, that I grew to have such resentment againist them.In school we were abused by them. I now as an adult, pray for God to forgive me for the feelings that I have always had. They were the most prejudiced people,I have ever met. They run the town, schools, justice system, and you name it,they are there! We had no chance to excel in school,as most of the teachers to this day, have the uppper hand. WE had to fignt to get in the Honor System even if you were deserving to be there, and beleive me it was a fight. My kids tried so hard at thier sports, and could never get anywhere. It saddens me to say this, but it was a world of hell. We moved. This is one place that still exsists. People moving there, would not beleive it was as such, until they experienced it for themselves. Even our Priest, and sad to say,he too, finally realized it! He too, felt and understood later. – Not a good place,in this way,but our Catholic Faith is so big there, and we all were always there for each other, and made us stronger Catholics and gave us more faith,as I would say God made us a family of Catholics. Years ago there were only Catholics and Mormons, and them on one side of town, and us in the other! I attended a Segragated School, and later they emerged. They had thier school, and we had ours. It was a good thing to do,in ways, but not in other ways. No one would beleive that this really exsisted! But,I have no reason to say different,as I lived it.— Now there are more religions there. — I grew up with no self esteem, shy and always afraid to speak up. I was taught to take things as they were. My parents raised us to be courteous and have respect. That is what we did.------- Utah has had so much coverage on the Polygamist. If perhaps you have read about Warren Jeffs,he has had so many wives, and teen girls as wives. He is now facing child abuse, and other charges. A very sad story. Especially for all involved, and the women and men that follow in his footsteps, thinking it is all the right thing to do,so. God will have to judge these people.----- Beleive me,I have so many stories that I could tell you about Mormons, although so unbeleivable! God just help them as they are taught that they will some day rule the world,as that is their goal, and I can see it happening in so many ways, yet to come. They are a strong and a rightous bunch. They have their good points as they do excell in what they beleive and do. That I give them credit for. All in all, this is just a story to be told. I love my hometown, and still have so many relatives there, and friends. Yet it will never change, and it is just accepted in this way of living.
I bleive My faith got me through my experience with them, and made it stronger, and I can thank them and GOD and My Parents for it. ----- When the missionaries come knocking on my door, I say “Sorry,I’m Catholic”. Some day, I will let them in and show them my video of " The God Makers",and see if they run off? God Bless my achy heart, and forgiveness. God give me the blessings I need to be neutral,as I was taught in my faith, and with my parents upbringing,as we were a family of 13. Good Loving Family, that we were so blessed. Thank you and hope that I did not hurt or offended anyone,as these are not my intentions. “A Catholic Perspective”. Madelena
