Wow. Just Wow. A researcher has made a timeline of various incidents in LDS History. I was amazed by what I read…things such as the LDS running brothels. An LDS Apostle claiming polygamy reduces masturbation, so polygamy is good. Joseoh Smith having a black lady sealed to him as his servant in heaven. LDS basketball team in 1930s Germany honoring Hitler with a Zeig Hiel. BY granting divorces to women who had been sealed. Made a TON of money. First Presidency declaring that the LDS racists positions were commandments from “The Lord”.

How can anyone seeing what these people who “talk directly to god” do and say believe their church is led by the one true God?

and just to beat the deflectors to the punch, yes, I know the over 2000 years of the Catholic Church is full of questionable and outrageous conduct. But this thread is about LDS History.

Additionally, the men discussed in this LDS history claim to TALK TO DIRECTLY TO GOD and have conversations with God. No Catholic leader makes that claim, so any comparison are silly and irrelevant unless you want to pout them on even ground and admit lds leaders are frauds and never talk to God.

I found it interesting that the author. D. Michael Quinn was a professor at BYU for 12 years before resigning.

It also took the lds 5 years after his resignation to excommunicate him as part of the September Six.
 
May 14, 1961 - Apostle Joseph Fielding Smith announces to stake conference in Honolulu: “We will never get a man into space. This earth is man’s sphere and it was never intended that he should get away from it.” Smith, the Twelve’s president and next in succession as LDS President, adds: “The moon is a superior planet to the earth and it was never intended that man should go there. You can write it down in your books that this will never happen.” In May 1962, he privately instructs that this view be taught to “the boys and girls in the Seminary System.” On 20 July 1969 U.S. Astronauts are first men to walk on moon. Six months later Joseph Fielding Smith becomes church president.

So the LDS God doesn’t want blacks to hold the priesthood and he’s against NASA too? lol.

What’s the deal with not allowing women to pray in the sacrament meeting? They were baned from doing that in the past?
 
You know, if you couple Thomas Ferguson’s research into mormon archeology with this history, along with JS and BY’s history, it just boggles my mind.

Any one of these would be enough to make a person wonder. Especially if they did any type of honest inquiry or research into the information.

To me, it just reinforces what I hear from many former mormons. They studied their way out.

that is how I did it…I studied to be a more knowledgeable Mormon and the more I studied, the worse it was

Are you referring to Jane Elizabeth Manning James? If so, she was sealed to JS after his death. She wanted to be sealed to one of the few black men who had been ordained by JS. However, her requests to have this done were ignored. She persisted and eventually the first presidency (under BY) said she could be sealed to Smith as a “Servitor for Eternity”. She was sealed by proxy because she was not allowed into the Salt Lake temple.

She was still dissatisfied with this arrangement and continue to request a marriage sealing. She was never granted this request.

The church should do the honorable thing and go back and say in past situations like that, she is sealed to Smith as a wife and not a slave.

Me, too. While teaching Gospel Doctrine class, I began to study more about Joseph Smith and so learned of the dark side of his character. I was shaken a bit by this, so devoted myself to studying LDS history and doctrine so as to overcome my doubts. Not only did studying not overcome my doubts, it destroyed the entire LDS house of cards.

Having been educated by the Jesuits, I have always been a good critical thinker. That was my downfall as a Mormon.

yep. I was just finishing law school. I was taught how to think critically, look for inconsistancies, recognize lies and excuses…look for holes and loopholes…etc.

That was my downfall
 
I have Paul Dupre’s marvelous cd “The Mormon Challenge” re: his journey into the Mormon church and then re-conversion to RC church; available thru St Joseph’s Communication. You former Mormons ought to post your conversion stories. Conversion stories are gifts to the world of reader/listeners out there.

Are there many non-Catholics who accept this position that Christ’s atonement eventually saves everyone? The Catholic Church explicitly rejects such a teaching, but it does seem to have a following among some non-Catholic Christians.
 
Dec 27, 1879 - Apostle Wilford Woodruff tells stake conference in Snowflake, Arizona, “There will be no United States in the year 1890.”

May 17, 1888 - At dedication of Manti Temple, Wilford Woodruff says, “We are not going to stop the practice of plural marriage until the Coming of the Son of Man.”

geez…did he get anything right?
 
Dec 5, 1891 - Stake President relates “incident of the Prophet Joseph telling Dimick B Huntington……that Noah built the Ark in the land where South Carolina is now.

wow…so Noah was from South Carolina according to Joe…
 
Oct 24, 1894 - Wilford Woodruff and his two counselors each give approval for Apostle Abraham H Cannon to marry plural wife. In all, ten general authorities marry post-Manifesto plural wives by permission of church president or his counselors during next ten years.

So…when their god gives a revelation, it does not apply to the apostles…huh?
 
Apr 7, 1895 - Wilford Woodruff tells conference: “Cease troubling yourselves about who God is; who Adam is, who Christ is, who Jehovah is. For Heaven’s sake, let these things alone.

translation: when your leaders keep giving you different stories about who or what God is, just ignore us…we have no clue.
 
Mar 2, 1904 - Before committee of U.S. Senate, Joseph F Smith testifies: “I have never pretended to nor do I profess to have received revelations. I never said that I had a revelation…l.”

maybe the only honest thing to come out of an LDS prophet’s mouth regarding revelation
 
Oct 6, 1907 - At sustaining of church officers a man votes against Joseph F Smith because of his admitted violation of Utah’s cohabitation law. Smith has him ejected from Salt Lake Tabernacle.

I guess LDS prophets do not have to obey the law
 
Jan 4,1922 - from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Brigham H Roberts presents detailed summary of textual and historical problems in Book of Mormon to combined meeting of First Presidency, apostles, and Seventy’s presidents He recommends that these problems should be researched and publicly discussed.

but I thought it was the most perfect book?
 
Oct 6,1946 - public release of Joseph Fielding Smith (b. 1899) as Patriarch to Church due to “ill health” but actually due to discovery of his recent homosexual activity.
