It appears the only reason the Mormons can give for believing that the BOM is from God, is a sort of warm, fuzzy feeling one gets after reading it and asking God to reveal its truth. I seriously doubt that very many Mormons read very much BOM. The BOM is horrible to read. Personally, I think the warm-fuzzy feeling thing is about like the pentecostal speaking-in-tongues thing: people manufacture in themselves what they need in order to belong to the group. I’ve tried reading it myself, but can’t do it… it is like trying to eat the bark off a tree. Or, like Mark Twain is quoted as having said:I suppose all a Mormon has to do is recite 1 Nephi chapters 12-14 which predicts the apostasy to show you that Christ supposedly said the keys would be taken away. So if you believe in the Book of Mormon you believe in the apostasy. Of course they have to give you a good reason to believe in the Book of Mormon.
Actually, Mormons do read the Book of Mormon a lot. They are told to read it 15 minutes per day and many do. They say it is more important to read it than the Bible. It appears the only reason the Mormons can give for believing that the BOM is from God, is a sort of warm, fuzzy feeling one gets after reading it and asking God to reveal its truth. “The book is a curiosity to me, it is such a pretentious affair, and yet so ‘slow,’ so sleepy; such an insipid mess of inspiration. It is chloroform in print. If Joseph Smith composed this book, the act was a miracle – keeping awake while he did it was, at any rate.”
My girlfriend has been a Mormon for over 30 years, but until she met me knew almost nothing about the various peculiarities that set Mormonism apart from Christianity. For the past couple of years I’ve been “educating” her about these. One thing has become clear to me: some Mormons don’t know very much about Mormonism, though the same can be said of Christians and Christianity. Apparently the little missionaries are instructed not to get into the strange details about Mormon beliefs when they go door-to-door. Those things get revealed later. My girlfriend has expressed quite a bit of shock as she’s learned the facts about Mormon theology and the lurid history of the LDS church.Actually, Mormons do read the Book of Mormon a lot. I couldn’t agree with you more Perez.Sorry to get a little off the topic everybody…BUT Zerinus why such rude and immature comments all the time?!! If being LDS is the one true religion of the entire world I would think you would never get tired of repeating things…It wouldnt annoy you so much.
