while googling pope benedict and genealogy i found this blog entry
PARIS (Reuters) - Pope Benedict was baptized at birth and will most likely be baptized again one year after his death, not by his Roman Catholic Church but by a Mormon he never met.
and then reading further…
Journalist Tom Heneghan suggests it is reasonable to expect Pope Benedict to be baptized by proxy in an LDS temple a year after the Pope’s future but inevitable demise, citing “a centuries-long list of popes Mormons have baptized” already. Mr. Heneghan thinks it strange that Pope Benedict will be baptized LDS given the fact that, when he served in the capacity of “the Vatican’s top doctrinal authority,” he ruled that Mormon baptisms are not Christian.
LDS Church spokeswoman Kim Farah responded:
“There is no reason theologically why a former Pope or any other church leader shouldn’t be offered the same opportunity given to the rest of mankind.”
In fact, theologically, perhaps the Pope is more in need of this kind of Mormon intervention than the rest of mankind. According to past LDS apostles, the Catholic Church was founded by the Devil and all authority residing within that Church is only that “which his Satanic majesty was pleased to bestow upon her” (LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, 1884, page 205).
In explaining a passage from the Book of Mormon, late LDS Apostle Bruce McConkie wrote,
It is also to the Book of Mormon to which we turn for the plainest description of the Catholic Church as the great and abominable church. Nephi saw this “church which is most abominable above all other churches” in vision. He “saw the devil that he was the foundation of it” and also the murders, wealth, harlotry, persecutions, and evil desires that historically have been a part of this satanic organization. (1 Ne. 13:1-10)

The Mormons will do a posthumous baptism on anyone as long as they get a request for it. Ever wonder why they keep that giant genealogical database? It’s to make the posthumous baptism process easier.

While I don’t necessarily believe their baptisms are valid, it still infuriates me that they have the arrogance to do this anyway.

Yeah, they keep necro-dunking Jews who were murdered during WWII. “Rape of the soul” is how Jews describe what they feel about this practice, and they keep asking the mormons to stop already.

They have also “baptized” Hitler and his girlfriend Eva.

I used to be lds but am now catholic. I do not understand why everyone gets all bent out of shape about this. They aren’t hurting anyone. They are conducting a ritual that has no effect on anyones soul. They are just waisting their own time and efforts although the geneology library is a nice resource. The only way I could see being upset is if you actually believed their ceremonies had effect in that case you might as well join the lds church.

The belief in itself by mormons is harmful, in that, it is a false teaching ascribed to revelations from God.

I agree that they’re wasting their time, but I can’t shake the idea that it is an extremely disrespectful thing to do, not to mention creepy and weird.

Well, in a way, being Catholic, we know that whatever the LDS decide to do posthumously, it means nothing. There is only ONE baptism that means anything, and we have it! :extrahappy:

I feel sorry for them that they waste so much time and energy on bunk. And that they will die in their sins not knowing any better.

Bottom line is, I’m sure the Pope is not lying awake at night in fear of what the LDS are going to be doing after he’s with the Lord. 😉 😃

LDS teaches “free agency”, (free will) however, they do every thing they can in this life and in the next to make religious decisions for not only their own members but all other humans on earth and in the “spirit world”. I find it totally disgusting that the LDS teach such trash about the Catholic faith, yet want to call themselves christian and try to get everyone to believe that they are accepting of all faiths., No they are not!! LDS believe it is o.k. to lie if the end result is conversion to their faith. Sad!!

It is okay to believe that this baptism is real, just as children believe Santa is real. You can believe anything you like, that is their choice. I find it interesting that such a central doctrine of the mormon faith is not in the book of mormon.

A lot of people think that if we as Catholics pray for the lost and dying without their consent, that we are the same, creepy and weird, at the very least. You should hear what most of the Protestant world thinks of us praying for those in purgatory. 😉

Bottom line is this, we are all doing what we think is right before God, some of us are correct and some are not. We should pray for those we think are wasting their time, that they will be brought into the fullness of truth and can turn their efforts to a more fruitful end. 👍

“necro-dunking” heh-heh. I’m going to have to remember that one.

At least honor the intent, as B XVI will no doubt be cursed by plenty after his death for whatever goofy reason.

I was told that they not only do this, but they do their “Prophet” does it in particular for the Popes.

Yeah, in my atheist years, there was a time when people telling me they were praying for me would **** me off. I didn’t ask them to, and I knew they were praying for things that I DIDN’T WANT. It felt like they were trying to force something on me.

It is creepy and weird and totally makes no sense to me…nothing logical about it makes sense…I guess I’d equate it to a Baptist saying their sinner’s prayer for me…odd.

However, I’m sorry did get a tickle out of the statement that a past Atheist got ticked off at someone praying for them. That’s funny stuff!

I think it is important to remember that the LDS church baptizes you post humously not to force you into anything, but (in their perception) to give you a choice to accept their teachings after death. Until the Second Coming of Christ they believe that after death you can STILL RECEIVE the gospel (being their version of the gospel) via those Mormons who have died. Therefore if you are baptized in their ceremonies it makes no difference because you would still have to accept it in the afterlife. Not even they believe baptizing you makes you anything that you weren’t in life. It just gives you a choice!

I am atheist and find that someone telling me they’re praying for me to be arrogant and ignorant. Same goes for the muslim who claimed all children are born muslim and then get corrupted their parents and the world into belleving something different.

It is correct they are trying to influence ur behaviour and trying to force someone on u, or at least tthey’re trying to annoy. If it makes them feel good for ruining someone’s day - makes me wonder if they really are as good as they claim.

It also makes think whether all religion rely on brainwashing or behavioural influence of some sort for conversion, as believers can’t allow people to reach their own conclusion on what they believe, w/o their interference.

For these reasons, if someone tells me they are praying for me, I automatical assume they are only responding to me from the depth of their ignorance and inability to accept freedom of belief.

Which says a lot for religion.

I did say “at one time”. The people who were praying for me are people who I love and care for, so, I figured them praying for me was an act of love. I didn’t believe prayer was doing anything but making them feel better, or in some cases feel like they were doing something when nothing could be done. And I was ok with the people I love feeling better.

Now, when I pray for people, I don’t think that I am trying to force something onto them. Just another way for me to show love. Also, I rarely tell people I pray for them. Prayer is just too new and different for me and honestly it sort of freaks me out.
