Ha ha! I don’t plan on letting my children keep them. I don’t know where I’ll keep them. I knew that they must be an LDS thing, but wasn’t searching the right stuff. I really wish she would just give them a nice generic gift when she feels the need for sending them stuff. A nice ITunes gift card would be fabulous.

Ahhhh wishful thinking. I love my mother-in-law anyway. She is a wonderful woman.
On a serious note however, if LDS items bother you, you need to find a nice, polite way of relaying this sentiment to your mother-in-law, otherwise you’ll be reinforcing the behavior (which could just escalate and cause further problems down the line).

If she gives you any lip, remind her of the 11th Article of Faith

Interesting. Thanks.

I sure wish they wouldn’t give my kids this stuff. Both my husband I have made it clear that they are being raised Catholic.
They mean well. You just have to stick to your guns.

My mom used to pay for a subscription to the LDS church magazine, “The Friend”, for my daughter. I’d get the mail, see it, and throw it away. I never said anything to my mom or my daughter and my mom never said anything to me.

The best one is when mormon missionaries show up, asking for you kids by name.

When my daughter was 9 years old my mom asked me when I was going to baptize her.

I have told her repeatedly that we are raising them Catholic and have asked them to refrain from doing anything to try to convert them.

She wouldn’t give me any lip she acts like she hears us but she doesn’t seem to hear what we are saying. But out of curiosity what is the 11th article of faith…

If you could say the LDS have a “creed”, the “Articles of Faith” would be it. They are 13 statements, crafted by Joseph Smith Jr. to “sum up” the LDS beliefs.

The 11th of those articles states “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”

Reminded my own mother about this article is what prompted her granting me her blessing in converting to Catholicism. She has never since bothered me about religious issues.

My in laws came to my oldest childs Catholic baptism. They were invited to all of the others but didn’t come.

My husband told the missionaries that we weren’t interested in converting. They have stopped coming by. I don’t know if that will last long but we’ll see. It’ll probably last until we get new missionaries.
My in laws haven’t sent any mags for my kids but they do send the Ensign for my husband.

I love them so much…if they knew how much stress they cause me it would probably stop but then they would feel guilty and it would be so awkward.

Yeah, my parents stress me out. I never know when they’re going to drop some huge Mormon bomb on us so I always feel like I have to be on my guard. Which sucks, because I love them and would just like to be around them without being so on edge.

I don’t believe that the rings were given without an ulterior motive.
Everything a Mormon does has an ulterior motive. Their sole purpose in associating with you is to convert you. Other than that, they have no use or regard for you. Your children have been targeted for conversion. If you tolerate it, you will soon have the missionaries calling on you.

They are not called “the morg” for nothing. They want to assimilate you.

Oh no! They are trying to follow Jesus! They must be stopped!
I don’t think that RebeccaJ was trying to say that the idea of CTR is a bad thing. She was just trying to answer the question of the OP as to where the idea of CTR comes from.

Don’t you think that’s a little harsh? I doubt that the OP mother-in-law has no regard for her other than conversion.

What do you mean by morg?

My gosh, I can’t believe that this is such a big deal. The phrase ‘choose the right’ refers to making the right choices in one’s moral life. I do believe that catholics would agree with making the right choices morally. For example, no sex before marriage and abstinance. To give a teenager such a ring is a nice gesture especially if it means what I just said it means.

What can be sooooo wrong with a ring that stresses making the right moral choices?

Yea, you are right! A mormon is a sinister human being whose only reason for existing is to convert gullible people to mormonism. And so, by giving teenagers a ring that says CTR (choose the right) must be evil and sinister!!

No more harsh than the reality of how the Mormons will lie, cheat, manipulate and coerce to get you to join their organization.

Mormons are called “the morg” as a combination of the words “mormon” and “borg” (of Star Trek fame). If you’ve ever seen the Borg in Star trek, they are a race of cyborgs who share a hive mind and whose sole purpose for existence is to “assimilate” other species (that is, turn them into borg).

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. I still am not sure why they recieved them. I can tell you I am uncomfortable with the idea of them being given to my kids as a gift.

Have you asked the giver why they were given to your children? That is the only way you will discover the true “motive”. Asking anyone else why they were given will give you opinions and suppositions, but not the real answer.

Wow, that’s about as rabid–and patently false–of a condemnation that I’ve read about myself for a long time. It’s unfortunate that such bigotry raises its head without the slightest condemnation from others who personally know better. I guess it’s to be expected: “And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”

Tsuzuki,

I am not against the follow Jesus part of the whole thing. I am more bothered by the fact that those who claim to love me will not respect my wishes to raise my children wholly Catholic. If they know it isn’t welcomed why do they do it?

The fact that she gave them these nice little little rings that affiliates them with a religon that they do not practice and that she knows I do not believe is kind of a devious way to make her mark.

I agree with you why me, but the fact remains that CTR is a term that is affiliated with the LDS. right? It may mean something good and I am not disagreeing with that, but it alludes to membership that my children do not have. And she does it knowing that I don’t want her to. It puts me in a tough spot with my childrem. If they liked the little gifts she sent and I wouldn’t let them have them she is causing strife and stress in my home. I can’t believe that any religion promotes causing upset and discord in a home.

I would never think to give her a figurine of the Blessed Mother Mary or a Crucifix, because I know that this isn’t something that is revered in the LDS church. I respect that and I wouldn’t want to put them in an awkward position.

Furthermore, I don’t believe that a ring will make kids make the right decisions. It is what they are taught on a daily basis in their homes that will give them the ‘moral advantage’ as I like to call it.

Just to make things clear…I don’t make my kids wear WWJD articles either.

Alma, I agree that some of the stuff said is harsh, but don’t you think that every religion and religious denomination has evil spoke of them? LDS do not like Catholics (as a religion not as individual persons) and have said some pretty harsh about us Catholics. I know that harsh statements have been made by Catholics toward the LDS faith as well.

Do you really call that Bigotry?

There is another layer of meaning of CTR. One Mormon once explained to me (Insulting my intelligence) that “right is right”. Politics on the right is right. Said, in other words, always vote conservative Republican.

Because of Newton’s law, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” I choose to always be a centrist. Voting for what is truly right.

OK, get me for making a political statement!!! 😛
