This is not confirmation, rather it is supposition. You are reading into it more than what Jesus is saying or what the disciples were asking. First of all, they did not believe in preexistence. Otherwise they would have talked this over with him. yet nowhere in the gospels does any disciple bring up the possibility of knowing Jesus in a “pre-life” existence. There are other scriptures that confirm the pre-existence of spirits. Here is another:
John 9:
1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
How could he have sinned to be born blind, unless he lived before he was born? Jesus didn’t respond to that question by saying, “Don’t be stupid; how could somebody sin before he is born?” Instead He replied, “Neither . . .,” which suggests that he could have sinned; but that in this instance that was not the cause of his being born blind. Hence men existed before they were born, and were even in a situation to be able to sin. They had freewill, and options to choose good and evil were presented to them, and they were able to make that choice. Satan and his crew chose the evil course, rebelled against God, and were cast out, whence came the “devil and his angels”. Those who remained faithful were given the opportunity to be born into mortality and progress towards eternal life, and to greater glories in the kingdom of God. Makes sense, right?

Also, from birth does not imply before birth.
