Hey guys, I need some help here figuring out whether or not my sin is grave. Today I was thinking I was in the state of mortal sin, but I was still praying throughout the day and I went to Mass (though did not receive the Eucharist). Then after Mass I was praying the Stations of the Cross and I got this thought…“Ask Father to hear your confession”, but I was too embaressed because I know this priest very well and I was embaressed for him to hear my sin. I knew that I might be in the state of mortal sin, and I also knew that not going to him would also feed my pride that sometimes keeps me away from this sacrament of Reconciliation. So, instead of going to him I just told Jesus that I couldn’t do it, even thought I knew it was wrong, and I was going to wait until tomorrow to go to confession to a priest I did not know. Then after that I felt terribly guilty - do you think that was another mortal sin? 1. Because I did not take the opportunity to confess right there and 2. Because I allowed myself to feed into my own pride to keep me away from the Sacrament. What do you think? Thanks.

No, I think its fine if you want to wait and go to another priest.

God Bless.

This is my opinion and I do not know this situation since I do not know what happenned and it is None of my Business - it is important to have a regular confessor so that you get in to a rhythm of what is and isn’t and you get rid of some of that embarassment. God bless.

God knows everything. He knows your sin and will judge you accordingly, per His divine justice. He also knows your weaknesses. Weakness is not sin, it is a component of your fallen human nature. However, He has placed the Priest in authority over your sin - not to bind it to you, but to make it go away, in conjunction with your contrition.

If one is going to assume, the only safe assumption is that your sin is worse than it actually is - and that you need absolution. Embarrassing? Think of being resurrected to eternal shame. Now, that’s embarrassing.

Hi BeNearMeLord3, welcome to the forums.
Never let the idea of being “embrasssed” prevent you from recieveing the healing of confession. I let this happen at it resulted in many errors and almost ruined my entire faith.

Yes, let us extend the hand of friendship and brotherhood! Welcome to the forums.

Here is another thought: Thinking that failure to confess is itself a sin that adds to sin is a train of thought that can only lead to more anxiety and failure to confess, which leads to more sin, which leads to failure to confess, which leads to… you see the danger.

If you have doubt about sin, ask the experts - your priest or any priest.

I believe that your scenario, “I can’t possible go to confession to my priest because he knows me” - paraphrased - is the 3rd such scenario that I read this week in CAF.

I don’t get it!!!

We apologize so quickly, so frequently, so easilly in public to our fellow brothers/sisters when we recognize “secularly” that we have offended them, but yet we are willing to GO TO HELL rather than go to our priest, who knows us as easily as our secular brother/sisters and apologize for our offenses???

satan IS TRULY undermining the sacrament of confession when so many of us would rather risk living with satan forever and ever in pain - fire - and suffering - rather than exposing ourselves to our local priest in confession.

Regardless as whether you go to a local priest or not, you go before JESUS. You are exhibiting an ignorance of the sacrament of confession when you place your secular relationship with the priest ahead of the salvation and saving grace which confession offers us - independent of which priest hears our confession - IT IS JESUS - who foregives us.

Confession is not between you and your priest, it is between you and your SAVIOR. WAKE UP and understand. If you do not go to confession because of embarassement, you are a prisoner of satan. Break the bonds - persevere - GO TO YOUR LOCAL PRIEST asap WHEN YOU HAVE MORTAL SINS ON YOUR SOUL.

Dear friend, no, it was not a further sin to put off confessing.

Three conditions must exist for you to be in a state of mortal sin.

First, the sin you committed must be grave.

Second, it must be committed with full knowledge(you did not meet this)

Third, it must be committed with full consent, that is, free will.

Being you didn’t know you committed a mortal sin or not, it was not mortal and unless you are certain that you committed a mortal sin, if you feel that you are called to receive Holy Communion, don’t hold back.

Instead, ask God for his grace and receive the Sacrament, and then be sure to get to Confession as soon as you can so that you can receive the grace to resist temptation in the future, and receive some guidence from your confessor.

It may be that while you were doing the Stations of the Cross and you felt Jesus was telling you to go to Confession, it may be so that you would’ve been given proper instruction on whether your sin was mortal or not.
