I have to comment on this bit of news from above web page.

Archbishop Paolo Pezzi of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow:
He “noted the suffering the nation has endured over the course of history. This suffering, he said, notably influences the mentality and the behavior of the Russian people, both collectively and individually.”
“…with good will, irreparable problems between brothers (catholic AND Orthodox Churches) do not exist.”
He “emphasized that every experience and charism in the Church can enrich it (the Church), making it (the Church) shine as the true Mystical Body, even if there will always be “division and sin” within it.”
The word ‘always’ disturbs me greatly. How depressing a thought!
I think he is stating that repair can happen, but is showing great doubt because of the simple fact that there will ALWAYS be division and sin. Should we even bother, then, to try at all to fix the past?

It never hurts to at least try, in ANYTHING that we do here on earth. Are we going to fail? Sure, plenty. But we should get up and try again and again and again. That is HOPE. And when people are down and out, trying is the BEST medicine to regain health again.

You are only focusing on one thing. He also said “irreversible problems do not exist.” This would mean that the problems can be reversed and unity is possible. Heck there is “division and sin” within the Roman Catholic Church even today. Remember the sex abuse scandal. I would call that a major sin and it has lead to great divisions in the church. The church is full of sinful humans so sin is about guaranteed. Since sin results in a harming of relationships with God and others there will be a division.

I don’t see any problem with what he said. It is true; there will always be sin and division. Can you think of a period of Christian history where there wasn’t some sort of division? We are all sinners and we continue to sin. But he does say that all of our problems are reparable.

Of course sin will always exist! What world are you living in? Just because sin exists doesn’t mean that you don’t combat it.

I don’t know. When I read this, I felt extreme doubt on his part. When their is a futile element underlying motivation, it seems hopeless before even the start of effort.
