Mostar Bishop Reiterates Rules for Medjugorje Parish

MOSTAR, Bosnia-Herzegovina (CNS) – Confirming young people from the parish in the Bosnian town of Medjugorje, Bishop Ratko Peric of Mostar-Duvno asked them not to behave as if the alleged Marian apparitions reported in the parish were real.

The directives are consistent with the judgment formula “non constat de supernaturalitate”. The church does not believe the alleged apparitions are authentic, and so does not participate in them nor encourage belief in them.

The bishop is within his rights and is quite right to have the parish priest refuse to publicly accept apparitions not officially accepted by the Church. Though still, if I understand rightly, laypeople are perfectly free to accept their authenticity. Personally, though, because the Church has never ruled that these appartiions are supernatural or worthly of acceptance, I stopped paying attention to them… But others are free to have a different view.

I wouldn’t be upset about either - official acceptance by the Church or not. Sometimes we get caught up in details (I belong to Peter … and I belong to Paul - Fatima, Garabandal, Lourdes, etc) and we forget the basic message: Love God and Love your neighbor. We fight with our neighbor about those details, get upset and then still go to Holy Communion like everything is OK. Either Mary, Jesus, saints or angels are reminding us about a GOOD and Holy life in this world - nothing more, nothing less. Why get all angry, upset and heated about is it Mary, is it authentic or is it a trick? The Church has a right to be careful with such apparitions. If some fruits are not appearing to be good, it would be rejected right away. Because there are some things that appear to be good, let go - let God. The time will come. For now - be true to God, to yourself, your family, friends - good to everyone.

I totally agree. With all the beautiful devotions and the depth of learning available in The Church that is already approved by Her, I don’t see any point at all in spending time or resources on a devotion, no matter how beautiful it may seem, if it isn’t approved by The Church. This is just my opinion.

Mostar bishop reiterates rules for Medjugorje parish

**MOSTAR, Bosnia-Herzegovina (CNS) – **Confirming young people from the parish in the Bosnian town of Medjugorje, Bishop Ratko Peric of Mostar-Duvno asked them not to behave as if the alleged Marian apparitions reported in the parish were real.

In late September, the bishop posted on his diocesan Web site an Italian translation of his homily from the June confirmation Mass, as well as letters to the Franciscan pastor of the Medjugorje parish and to another priest serving there.

Bishop Peric had told the young people that, during a visit to the Vatican early in the year, the top officials at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Vatican Secretariat of State confirmed they were telling anyone who asked that the Catholic Church has never recognized the alleged apparitions as authentic.

**to private people **for private use," he said, ordering the Franciscan to cease commenting on or publicizing them in any way.

The Church is very deliberate and takes much time in such matters . . . deliberating diligently and quite deliberately . . . taking many things into consideration over time . . . and the happenings in Medujugorje are still under investigation by the Church . . . and a decision either pro or con has not been forthcoming from the Holy See . . . this has been the established pattern and position of the church for many years . . .

If you have watched EWTN . . . for years they have been very very careful . . . because the Church has yet to make a decision about the Medjugorje apparitions . . . to not promote Medjugorje materials in their bookstore . . . while occassionally comments come up in programs about Medjugorje . . . their are neither supported nor denied by EWTN . . . who remain with Rome as essentially neutral . . . and will I am sure remain so until Rome speaks authoritatively on the subject . . . leaving decisions to believe or not to believe completely in the “personal belief” category . . .

Regarding Lourdes and Fatima . . . the Holy See also took . . . appropriately . . . years of contemplation . . . and excercised much due diligence in deliberating and investigating these apparitions also . . . before the Church made any decision about these apparations . . . Medjugorjian apparitions have neither been condemned nor been authorized . . . they remain in the “private revelation” . . . category at present . . . and are still in the . . . “undecided” . . . category for the Catholic Church . . . because the **Holy See **authoritatively has not yet ruled and spoken on these matters . . . The church in Medjugorje is completely under the authority of the **Holy See **. . . and the Bishop’s request that it officially remain quiet until the **Holy See **makes a decision on the apparitions is completely appropriate . . .

The apparitions remain . . . “private revelation” . . . and belief in same . . . until the Holy See speaks regarding same . . . remains in the category of . . . “private belief” . . .
