Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It seems to me that Mary’s title as “Mother” of the Church is better known, perhaps than her title as “Model” of the Church but more and more I’m beginning to see how the Holy Spirit has inspired the Popes to use this title, and encourage us to see Mary in ever truer ways.

Pope Benedict has said that Mary is not only a mother to the Church but a model in her “Yes” to God. I wonder how many have pondered this beautiful role of Mary as both Mother and Model for the Church. Would anyone care to share some additional thoughts of their own on this title?

It seems to me it can help us to obey Jesus words: “Behold Your Mother” in ways, perhaps, we have not pondered before – taking time with how she is Model for all. I’d be grateful for your sharing your prayerful pondering of this. Thanks. 🙂

Also, Saint. Pope John Paul II wrote that the:
“Blessed Virgin is a superior model for the Church”
which is because the Church
“gives spiritual birth to Christ in the faithful, thus carrying out her maternal role for the members of the Mystical Body”.

Dear Vico,

Thanks so much, for that link and the quote from Pope JPII. What a Faithful and loving son to Mother Mary, St. John Paul II was and is and such a powerful witness to the Truth that the Church’s devotion to Mary is intrinsic to Christian devotion! (cf CCC 971)

Yes, Mary is definitely “superior” and above all other saints – for none had or have now the degree of union with God which our Mother Mary experienced on earth and has now in heaven.

The more we ask God to reveal her to us, the more I believe He will give to us, just as He gave St. John Paul to and others, the graces we need. This Saturday, Apr. 28, is the Feast of St. Louis de Montfort, and St. John Paul II wrote that reading St. Louis De Montfort’s treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin was a turning point in his young life. St. JPII’s papal motto was “Totus Tuus” (“All Yours”) – taken directly from St. Louis De Montfort’s treatise and Act of Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary.

If anyone reading this thread has never read the book, I encourage you to find time to do so either by reading it online (see link above) or purchase a copy HERE
