If God were not behind Mother Angelica starting EWTN, it would not have succeeded.
Yes, there could be a protest, but what about this or that ministry that succeeded and was shown not to be honest.
But, so far, EWTN, and her mission has been guided by sincere people with the intention of keeping the authentic Gospel alive in modern communication.
Mother Angelica could be abrasive, but she had a child-like faith and trust in God’s Providence. And her communication showed that.
At least she didn’t water down that Jesus Christ seeks us by Grace to cooperate with that Grace with a sincere trusting heart - and let Him burn away rationalizations.
By her giving her life that way, she was a lot more perceptive then she is given credit, cutting through the fog of rhetoric.
It is very sad that people think it was some kind of ‘war’ between Traditionalists and Liberals.
Wrong. It was deep concern over a lukewarm accommodating false Christ which spread throughout the Church. I’m not going to get into details, but I will note that before 1950, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, well aware of certain things I will not bring up, said that God is going to allow the Remnant Church to be surrounded by a ‘new’ humanitarian Church that from the outside will look like the real Church. But while championing some, it will be complacent even to the witnessing of bloodshed of others. At the time he didn’t realize it would be the most vulnerable; which when not given a voice, actually hurts the soul of the others helped in earthly ways - and even those attempts at help are dubious and enabling.

Besides, we need very much, those who champion the Traditional Church, so that there is a clear continuity. And many callers conveyed many things that showed what was happening in many places. And now, some former or ‘post’ liberals like Bishop Robert Barron speak on this need, also.

Peace. Mother Angelical may or not be completely Sanctified by now; but she lived an unselfish life for Christ, so she certainly will be, if not already.

I didn’t flag you.
I know some people prefer monks in prayer and more subdued, but it seems like the monk’s superior asked him to skateboard in order to reach young people.
So he couldn’t really say no.
Also it reminded me of when Eric Liddell used to run races to give glory to God, and he reached a lot of young people in that way.

Funny, I thought it might be Brother Leo who relates so well to children.

I dislike her nationalism, bragging about being Italian – which is undoubtedly why a lot of people like her. So? I’m of Polish descent, so I’m bad?
Good grief, you have a sainted Pope and many great saints including St. Faustina and St. Maximilian Kolbe sharing your nationality. You can be proud of that and Mother Angelica can be proud of being Italian, there’s room for both. By the way, I’m neither Polish nor Italian in the slightest and neither was my husband, and I enjoy Polish churches as much as I do Italian ones.

I’ve never personally heard her “brag” about being of Italian descent. If anything, she would be poking fun at herself and her family for common Italian quirks when she mentioned it.

I’ve always known her to be very humble and no-nonsense. I appreciate her straightforward, loving manner.

With respect to prayers for Mother Angelica and other deceased people thought to be holy, we must remember that God applies the prayers at the appropriate place and time. He is not limited by time like we are. So my prayers for Mother Angelica today may be helping her at the hour of her death, or during her last illness, or even during her life. They might also go to help her canonization cause, as we are exhorted to pray for the canonization of our favorite holy people. If she really doesn’t need the prayers at all, then God would reassign them to someone who needed the help. Perhaps a relative or friend of Mother Angelica, or a sister from her order, or a soul in Purgatory who has no one to pray for them, or even a relative or friend of ourselves.

I didn’t have a normal healthy relationship with my own mother, and I can’t get excited about Mother Angelica.

She herself said that all the people at EWTN did all the work and she got the credit. So, I don’t have to make up something negative about her. She said it herself.

I dislike her nationalism, bragging about being Italian – which is undoubtedly why a lot of people like her. So? I’m of Polish descent, so I’m bad?

If I started up a religious network like she did, I too would have everybody there praying for me at every Mass. See? That’s what I don’t understand. If she was already so holy, why did she need all those prayers? In the general intercessions of the Mass, she and the nuns usually come up #1 for prayers.

And now, her picture shows up in the background of the studio programs. C’mon. give me a break.
We pray for our Pope and Bishops, and the souls of all the faithful departed, at every. single. Mass. Each and every day.

I’m sure at least some of those who have become holy owe at least part of it to the continual prayer of the faithful being offered for them in this way.

Mother was what we needed at the time (mid '80’s to 2000) she attempted to set the ship straight; facing bankruptcy at nearly every turn;

somehow ewtn’s ministry survived

do i like EVERY Mother Angelica broadcast? NO; frankly they’ve become a little stale

maybe her daily show should go on a hiatus; and some younger, more current & vibrant voices be given a crack @ ewtn prime time…

She doesn’t have a daily show. She’s only on 3 or 4 times a week and only one hour in primetime. Tuesday night at 8. There’s plenty of time throughout the day and in primetime for new shows.

Some did like my previous comment, maybe more than said so.

On a more positive note, I have to admire how Mother Angelica could handle herself for a whole hour’s program. In fact, I’m tempted to think and say that she must have been coached a lot to come up with some of her monologue programs. In real time, those programs were only one per week, and they are run daily now on TV and radio. So she had a lot of time to prepare in any case.

On EWTN TV and Radio, the phone calls are heavily censored and screened. The producers always had a child talk to her when they had such a chance. She was always given easy questions to answer “live” on the air.

One of Mother Angelica’s program had her talking about the leg braces she wore and how one day she didn’t put them on and she walked just fine.

I found that story to be incredible. I don’t know why she wore those braces in the first place, and under what circumstances she no longer needed them.

I think she also claimed not to need an anesthetic of any sort for having a root canal.

I found these stories hard to believe, and I was glad she did not persist in re-telling those stories.

Help me with this. Did she not claim to have had an apparition of the child Jesus?

I’m really showing my age here, because these are from broadcasts up to 25 years ago.

Reruns of Mother’s primetime hourly show are on Monday (am), Tuesday (am and pm), Wednesday (am) and Saturday (pm). Her various half hour shows (from the early years of EWTN) are on Thursday (am) and Friday (am).

Sometimes there are episodes of MAL or TBoMAL during the overnight hours between Sunday and Monday.

Her series on Heaven usually airs each year on Mother’s Day.

And of course, her program airs on EWTN Radio. So yes, Mother is on daily in one form or another.

I think it’s wonderful.

The accolades heaped on MA are somewhat problematic to me. Perhaps the Lord put her into a situation where she did the Lord’s work, but that was expected of her. I don’t credit her for doing more in her life than anybody else has done in their own lives, as long as they too did the Lord’s work.

I believe there is Biblical teaching on this point " to whom much is given much is expected" and some similar verses. She was given much so it should be that she did what confronted her each day. That is an example for us.

In 1946, Mother had an accident with an industrial floor scrubbing machine which caused injury to her spine and necessitated the use of a brace and crutches for many years.

In late January 1998, Mother shed her leg braces and crutches for good after a Wednesday night prayer session in which she felt the heat in her ankles and gradually regained control of her legs. The next day, after another prayer session, she discarded the brace she’d worn for the spinal injury she’d suffered from the accident with the industrial floor cleaning machine.

Mother spoke of this miracle during an episode of Life On The Rock then hosted by Jeff Cavins. That episode aired again after Mother’s death. It truly was amazing.

The apparition of the Child Jesus occurred in 1995 when Mother and several nuns went to Bogata, Colombia and were praying in a side chapel of the Sanctuary of the Divine Infant Jesus after Mass. The chapel had an image of the Child Jesus.

While praying, the image came to life and Mother heard “Build Me a temple.” The nuns with her didn’t hear a thing. But after they returned home, they set out to find a place for the shrine to the Child Jesus to be built. That temple became the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

You’re free to just ignore her. The Church doesn’t require that you look up to Mother Angelica or watch EWTN. However, she has touched a lot of other people’s lives and faith journeys in a very positive way.

From a business standpoint, I’m impressed by the fact that she as a lowly, broke, inexperienced female nun who came from a poor, dysfunctional family background and was partly disabled for much of her life managed to pioneer a TV network. I don’t think she was looking for accolades. I think she was just looking to do the Lord’s work based on her own personal communications with the Lord. She would likely tell you that the Lord was responsible for everything and just used her as His instrument.

Some did not understand her sense of humor.
She was humble and no nonsense.
Today, many people look at ‘no nonsense’ as judgmental of individuals.
I’m not saying she never said a judgmental statement, but overall
she praised virtue and hated sin in herself, and the sin that makes this world
so sorrowful in disharmony with Virtue from and God and God Above.
She saw through the world’s growing, by impetus of many intellectual elite,
selling of sin & darkness with propaganda honey speech rhetoric playing at heartstrings.
One of their favorite tools, is that when someone speaks against sin, they are judgmental,
and not compassionate.
Many devout people and teachers believe this is part of the ‘strong delusion’ mentioned in Thessalonians. And there was a seer who had a vision of wolves. The last wolf was worse
that all the one’s before. A grey wolf that obscured black and white.
I don’t watch the episodes regularly like I tried to do with the originals. But it is ironic that
last evening she spoke on the beginning of 1 Corinthians 13. Of particular interest was,
“If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.” v. 3
And she compared this with Mother Teresa’s caring for the poor and she surprised the world
speaking on the Sacredness of Human Life as opposed to others who promote that they care for the poor, but promote the culture of death. God help many more see through
‘the grey wolf!’
EWTN remains part of the remnant who tell it like it is. And one day all of good will, (apart from just criticisms) - will realize that many of the detractors of EWTN were hoodwinked into that accommodating congeniality wasn’t cajoling. Paul the Apostle spoke of people having ‘itchy ears’ building up teachers for themselves that tell them what they want to hear.
EWTN, strives not to do that, and airs many things on true compassion;
like Fr. Richard Ho Lung of Missionaries of The Poor; who tells it like it is, also.
Peace.

But when I think of monks…like Saint Francis of Assisi…
Or the movie “ Into the Great Silence “
I don’t think of skateboarders and basketball.
I think the challenge of 2018 is to prove that you are relevant and cued in to reality before anyone will even listen to your evangelizing.

Clips like the skateboarding and basketball clips help to establish report and credibility. These days, when young non-Catholics see men I robes and hoods they assume those men couldn’t possibly relate to what life is like in 2018. Friars are like curiosities in curiosity shops. Something to be gawked at.

The monk with skills is also a central figure in a lot of popular culture for years now. Usually the monk is a Buddhist in the anime or manga or whatever, but he could just as well be a Western Catholic monk.

If people see that a monk has qualities in common with them or qualities they’d like to emulate, they’re less likely to think of him as a gay rapist or somebody who never did anything but pray in a church, and that leads to seeing religious belief as a normal part of everyday life. The same purpose used to be served when priests could get out and play baseball with the boys, without all kinds of abuse suspicions or allegations happening.

So true. Did you ever see ‘Real Life Catholics,’ on EWTN?
In a related note.
Personally I find the succors to Fr. Groeschel and Fr. Andrew Apostili
more difficult to relate to; but but but - they can give assertive compassionate
truths of our faith to a generation that understands them.
Paul The Apostle did the same with the Greeks, where Salvation history
was foreign to them.
Finding points of relative communication with others who differ from us has always
been part of Evangelization like wholesome things in other cultures integrated into their Liturgy, even. The Solemn form and substance of The Liturgy remains the same.
The uncompromising truth has many facets in Holiness — and these things do bear fruit,
which is the real test.
(I wonder how varied and beautiful are the myriads of expression in Heaven?)
