I see that the moderator did it but are we able to merge manually?
Nope. But if you ever see a duplicate thread you can flag it, specify which ever option means “some other reason”, and then for the reason say the thread is a duplicate and place a link to the duplicate thread.

Good to know. I sent a message but that is easier.

The story got national attention. The Florida legislature even passed a bill specifically protecting the act of “brandishing a partially consumed pastry or other food item to simulate a firearm or weapon.”

Last year the Maryland State Board of Education backed the school’s narrative, finding that: “The student in this case had a long history of behavioral problems that were the subject of progressive intervention by the school. He created a classroom disruption on March 1, 2013, which resulted in a suspension that was justified based on the incident in question and the student’s history.”
The Pop- Tart kid had problems but still this incident did nothing to resolve his problem. and created more problems by having a second suspension on his records. So he chewed a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun, he was 7 years old.

A five day suspension, no way. The schools have gotten too extreme on this issue. This child was not a threat to anyone. A letter sent home should have clarified rules for home school.

This is an older case, just ridiculous

I can see why the child was suspended. Guns of ANY sort are NO joke in a school setting nowadays there just isn’t any wiggle room

Unfortunately, there are a number of issues for which some schools have “zero tolerance” policies. While these policies make for good PR in response to a tragedy, the longer term with such policies and they prohibit the faculty from applying their intellect in how to handle a problem. To do so could cost one their job.

He was in his own home. Thie school should have dealt with this pror to the incident, by sending a notice home to parents advising them that no weapons (zombies, legos)would be allowed to be seen in the video.

Agree and they call in the police when there is no need. The children have parents.

it’s understandable that someone cannot tell it’s a toy looking at their computer screen,
how can they miss the orange barrel which indicates it is a toy gun?

That’s exactly why the police needed deal with it. The kids needed to know why it was an issue in the first place.
the kid was home, not at school. is it illegal to have a toy gun in your house?

It is not illegal to have it in your home, just to show it in a “school setting” such as during a Zoom class.

They have not necessarily missed it. A simulation of a gun may be sufficient for punishment. See the incident about thebpopntsrt fun above.

No. And I dont think any legal charges were brought against anyone.

according to the article the cops said they could.

sitting in front of a computer at home is not a school setting. who can see the kid? can kids see each other? would the same thing have happened if the kid was playing with a barbie?

I’m waiting for a reveal of a crucifix within the camera’s vision. A Bible on the work surface. A tee shirt with - I dunno- words on it.

Panic.

can kids see each other?
Yes… the kids can see each other.

Which makes me wonder, if the school can impose a suspension on what he does at home because it can be seen through zoom, what are the broader implications?

Do the posters on the World News forum who support Biden count?
