Ok, I was at the mall this evening and two people stopped me to ask if they could talk to me I said, sure.

Then they invited me to their bible study, their lure was “Did you know we have a heavenly mother?”, I said “yes” and then they said, “No, not Mary, we have a Mother God:eek: , it’s in the scriptures, that’s the secret we want to share with you at the bible study, don’t take my word for it, or ANY man’s word, it’s all in the written word.”

Anyway, supposedly it’s in the bible and prophesised in the the Old Testament and in Revelation, they claim that the Second Coming has ALREADY occurred:mad: and that we are waiting on the end times:shrug: for the one who is to sit on David’s throne, etc., etc. They said that Constantine changed the sabbath from Saturday to Sunday because he wanted the Christians to worship the sun god. They quoted from Hosea and Isaiha(sp??)🤷 .

Does anyone know what the heck these people are talking about? The brochure they gave me talks about the Sabbath being on Saturday and it specifically quotes from the book “Faith of Our Fathers” and from “Our Sunday Visitor” that the Sabbath, to which we are held responsible, is Saturday. They also claimed that Jesus said He came to “uphold” the laws “not change them” that’s one of the justifications they are using for Saturday and not Sunday worship.

I know I won’t go to their bible study cause I don’t feel comfortable enough in defending the faith against bible “experts”, but I would love to know if anyone else who is good in apologetics would like to go and set these people straight with some Truth. If you are interested please pm me, they are in Bloomingdale, IL, a Chicago suburb.

Wow. I have no idea what kind of new cult this is but it definitely sounds like a cult to me. It doesn’t sound like anything that the Jehovah’s Witnesses or Mormons believe so I really don’t know who these people are. “Our Sunday Visitor” is a pretty common devotional or whatever that a lot of mainstream Protestant churches use which kind of confuses me why they’d use it. Anyway, sorry I wasn’t of much help but I will definitely pray that these people see the light. :signofcross:

Except for the “Mother God” thing, they almost sound like JW’s or SDA’s. Just a new variation on previous errors deriving from *Sola Scriptura *and private interpretation. Thank you, Martin Luther! :tiphat:

By the way, Holly, “Our Sunday Visitor” is a very old and respected Catholic periodical. Many anti-Catholic sects and cults like to cite old Catholic books and magazines and quote them out of context to attack the Church. Similarly, “Faith of Our Fathers” is a Catholic apologetics book written in the late 19th century.

Sounds like 7th day adventist with the sunday bit.

but mother god, funny enough my bro-in-law was just telling me about a guy that had left a church and ended up in his. I guess that pastor had stood up and said something about Christ making a mistake and then hung his arms out. Then proceeded to talk about mother god.

maybe its the same bunch ??? I will ask him for the details again.

I don’t think they have the peculiar views about the Saturday Sabbath that you mentioned, but other than that it sounds like Shakers…but I to actually run into a group of Shakers, (especially a group evangelizing) would be very rare.

Jesus gave us, specifically, the ‘Our Father’…

I wouldn’t go, but I would pray for them.

Mormon’s DO teach about a “mother god” or “heavenly mother”. They teach that this is how our Heavenly Father creates “spirit children” that someday come to earth  I know crazy.
I could be wrong, but the word “sabbath” does mean Saturday right? But we celebrate on Sunday because that is the day that Christ rose. I usually just read posts and don’t respond because I don’t want to sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about 😉 so if I’m wrong, please be kind. :o

Do you think the mother God bit could be just an attraction? To get you in their bible study? Seems like goddess worship is rampant right now…my sister in law is Wiccan 😦 and it’s all about goddess worship…so…

WE … are you Mormon?

I am able to go there, but I would not. Is there any way you can post portions of their periodicals or tracts so we can take it line by line?

No no no…I meant “we” as everyone who goes to church on Sunday :o not Saturday. I am an ex-Mormon, though I wasn’t for long only a year. And on September 2 of this year, I was baptized Catholic 😃 and know that I’m home now.

👍

Why dont you post more? I am bookmarking this!😃
Bless your heart, dear - if my ego could purr, it would do it for you. chortling Some days I don’t feel like I have much to contribute, and I’ve had a string of those days lately, alas!

Thank you for the emotional boost! 🙂 :blessyou:

Thanks be to God! :hug1:

Let me find the brochure and I’ll post more of what it says.

They are not SDA and they claim that mother god is in the bible:bigyikes: , that’s why they are so “excited” because they claim to have found the “secret to our salvation” and are eager to share this with us:tsktsk: .

These followers would be more similar to catholocism than any sola scriptura church in that one puts great emphasis on works for salvation and both use sources outside of scripture for matters of doctrine.

Ok, the brochure they gave me is specifically about keeping the sabbath holy…which would be Saturday.

They are from World Mission Society Church of God, the brochure has a web address, it’s english.watv.org.

They site Matthew 24:20-21 “Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now–and never to be equaled again.”

According to them Jesus would not have said that if it wasn’t necessary to keep the Sabbath (Saturday) until the end of time.

myfavoritmartin, this thread isn’t about your pointing out to us Catholics about how wrong we are, there are enough threads for that.

Lexee, are they saying that there are scripture passages that refer to ‘Mother God’ (such as ‘Sophia’ or are they using Dan Brown’s 'the Jews combined their male and female gods to get Jehovah) or are they saying that the Bible was written in a male dominated society and so we can look beyond the gender-specific ‘Our Father’ based on our more ‘englightened’ modern views?

Edit: There’s nothing on their website about ‘Mother God’. Just generic protestantism with specifics about Saturday Worship, ‘return-to-our-Jewish-roots’, some anti-Christmas and Catholic belief stuff and, interestingly, something about women needing to wear a veil.
