Mother Teresa is to be elevated to sainthood in September, Pope Francis announced this morning.

As has been long rumoured, her Canonisation will take place on September 4, which this year will also mark a special jubilee for workers and volunteers of mercy. The announcement came officially during today’s consistory of cardinals.

In addition to Mother Teresa, the consistory also confirmed the Canonisation of four other blesseds.

Yay! I know I’ve heard of Jose Sanchez before, but I don’t know the other three.

Hmm… “is to be elevated to sainthood”?

That’s a very misleading title. It’s not like we are the ones who are “elevating” her to sainthood; rather, if we’re holding a canonization ceremony it’s because she’s already a saint.

Is that really how the pope said it or is some journalist at fault?

All that aside, though… this is great news!! 🙂

Now St. Jose can be my patron saint! Maybe I already have one… But his story is what I strive to be, an obedient servant of Christ to death.

Since Mother Theresa is going to be canonized it has brought the hate out and on another forum there is a discussion of her. You can imagine.

One slam of her is she raised millions of dollars but kept the people she was taking care of in bad conditions. Only minimal care, etc. She wanted them to suffer for their salvation and didn’t give them much pain meds, etc. Denied care of one young man who could have been helped with an operation but if one person had an operation, all would want the same care, and on and on.

The documentary on youtube that Christopher Hitchens did is a horrible hate piece about her. Does anyone know about this and is there a secular web site that shows how much money the Missionaries of Charity have and how it is used?

I know there has been movies of her life but is there a secular study of her and her life that gives the truth without a lot of agendas either way?

Thanks.

Consider the source and forget it. I would avoid those types of forums. The Catholic Church would never even consider the Canonization of someone whose holiness is doubtful!!! I trust the Church and Mother Teresa. Did you ever see a picture of that little ladies feet?? How she could even walk, I do not know !! Pray for those on that forum. God Bless, Memaw

All I can say on this topic is that if Mother Teresa did not make heaven, I am lost. So much hate for a woman who offered all she had to God’s work amongst the poor is proof enough that the devil is very worried.
Let us pray for those who spread such calumny and try to expand her good works of temporal mercy in our own lives. Forgive those who hate so we may love.

Atheists and secularists will always hate Mother Teresa because she was a devout Christian. This should not surprise anyone. See the attacks on Mother Teresa for what they are.

At Ave University in South Florida, they have a beautiful museum for Mother Theresa. The photos and stories of her, showing her among the worst of the suffering, is witness to the love of Jesus in her soul. A holy card with a picture of Mother Theresa, raising a baby up with such love and joy, is my favorite keepsake from my visit.

Hitchens, was a staunch atheist and hater of Mother Teresa.

He started the ideas that Mother Teresa withheld pain medications from people in her care and such, but this is totally misleading.

Mother Teresa, did not operate hospitals or medical centers. She had no medical training and was not qualified to give medications to people in her hospice.

What Mother Teresa did was take people out of the gutters of Calcutta, who were left there to rot according to the cast system which was entrenched in India, that these people were paying for sins in their previous life.

Mother Teresa took them into her hospice, cleaned them up, fed them and gave them a clean place to sleep.

Whatever medical care came, came from medical professionals over time, who donated their time. Medical supplies came from donations and were given by medical professionals who volunteered.

But in the early days before Mother Teresa’s mission became popular, medical aid was sparse.

Lastly, Hitchens claimed that Mother Teresa lost her faith, but this is false and it was his own lack of understanding of what the Dark Night of the Soul is, and how most of the Saints went through it. Mother Teresa’s Dark Night of the Soul was intense and long, but she never lost faith, nor abandoned her mission.

What people never bothered asking Hitchens is, what had he done to help the poor that could be matched to what Mother Teresa did ?

The answer would be, nothing.

Yeah, because everyone knows how lavishly the Missionaries of Charity furnish the private mansions where the sisters live.

Oh wait, I forgot, most of them forego “typical” comforts like running hot water, beds, carpeting on the floor, pews or chairs or kneelers in their chapels, etc. If you’ve ever volunteered with them, you know that they live simple lives of hard work and prayer. Their habits (including Mother Teresa’s – and yes, I met her in person and spent several hours with her) are well-worn, tattered, and mended. Their sandals are simple and not exactly “orthopedic.” Their bodies show the natural effects of their intense work.

Haters gonna hate. Walk away from those websites, 'cause you are never going to be able to change their minds.

Spot on. Blessed Theresa of Calcutta did more for the dignity of the people she cared for (how many detractors or even medical professionals willingly spend their time caring for people covered in feces, vomit, and sores with love and compassion?)

Her mission was to care for and love the lowliest of the low in societal terms, the marginalized, and those who had no one to love them - truly Christ’s mission for everyone. Critics snipe at her out of jealousy and their own self-loathing at seeing someone doing work they know they could not do. I am not sure if I could do it, but rather than react with anger and jealousy, I look at her as a role model of what I should strive to b, not someone to attack out of my own sense of insecurity and weakness.

Anti-Theists and Militiant Atheists and secularists will always hate Mother Teresa because she was a devout Christian. This should not surprise anyone. See the attacks on Mother Teresa for what they are.
