Pope Benedict is inspiring to say the least.

Back in the early 80’s John Paul II was so impressed with Benedicts thinking in theology he immediately made him Bishop and then transferred him to Rome. Together the two would meet every Friday with leading Theologians world wide to debate and talk. Without a doubt the man is a leader in the field. At that time in Rome Benedict was in charge of the CDF, which alone is impressive.

Did the Padre Pio biography go into the Miracle he performed for John Paul II? Late 50’s John Paul wrote Pio a letter explaining how a close friend of his had terminal cancer and asked him to Pray for her. Two days later she was completely healed.

Padre Pio without a doubt is/was touched by God. Fact that he’s not here any more only advanced his state of Grace.
I don’t think the miracle was mentioned in the movie but I did read about it. It did not go much into his miracles which I was thinking it would. But all in all it was still a good movie. It accented the diabolic persecution he went through.

No offense taken, adrift…when you mentioned it, i took it as the right time to bring it up, so that lurkers would see and hopefully, take it to heart. Who knows, the OP may be lurking and is not making his presence known.
I was reading this post and then the soundtrack from Jaws just started running in my head. 😃

I’m sure this has been address quite well but I thought I would put in my :twocents:

Yes, Peter is absolutely the Rock on which the Church is built. It is very plainly stated in Matt. 16:18. Peter was given this name by Christ in John 1:42. This is also a direct parallel of Matt. 7:24-25. Also in Matt. 16:19 it was Peter and Peter alone who received the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Hence the ability to bind and loose sins. In Matt 17:24-25 the tax collector approached Peter to collect the taxes of Jesus and Peter acted as the spokesman/the vicar of Christ. In Matt. 19:27 it was Peter who spoke on behalf of all that they left everything to follow Jesus. In 1Cor. 15;4-8 Paul himself distinguishes Christ resurrection first to Cephas then to the other 11. These are but a few examples of Peter being the Rock of the Church that Christ built upon him.
A priest cited the Council of Jerusalem as an example.

There was James and the Jews on one hand wanting to maintain the primacy of the Law and on the other was Paul and the gentiles.

We see Peter acting decisively and proving to be the stabilizing force balancing James and Paul.

I must see the movie, I wasn’t aware of it till this post. Just an amazing life.

Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe. St. Augustine…So True.

Where was that one found? I can recollect that one in my head but I can’t think of where to read it. Very good point though.👍

I am so against women priests. Our Spiritual Director is for it and we always end up in an argument over it. 😃

This is all feminism gone mad.🙂
i agree with you 100%. we all have our roles to play, and im glad mine is not having the babies…😛 dont think us guys could take the pain. 🙂

Hi, Workingman,

Reading Acts 15 has a pretty good account of the Council of Jerusalem - the controversy involving the Judiazers trying to enforce circumcision, the first major crisis of the early Catholic Church and the resolution Peter. James was simply not content until he had his say after Peter had made the decision.

God bless

Only in the ill informed mind.

When a man’s first recourse is the ad hominem, it’s clear that no meaningful conversation will be possible. Continue to enjoy your echo chamber, and forgive me for expecting a civil dialogue.

Your post was well-reasoned and very civil/charitable. I think benedictus’ post was unfair and showed an unwillingness to debate and discuss, just throw out insults and polemics. Don’t let that discourage you, Irish. There are plenty of good Catholics in here who are willing to disagree and yet still have civil discourse and friendship with Lutheran brethren.

It is clear that no meaningful dialogue is possible when AnIrishLutheran starts accusing me of ad hominem when it is clear you do not even know what ad hominem means.

So here’s a little lesson so you will be less “ill-informed” (hope you realize that I am being cheeky here) 🙂

Ad Hominem -a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument. Typically, this fallacy involves two steps. First, an attack against the character of person making the claim, her circumstances, or her actions is made (or the character, circumstances, or actions of the person reporting the claim). Second, this attack is taken to be evidence against the claim or argument the person in question is making (or presenting).

This type of “argument” has the following form:

  1. *]Person A makes claim X.
*]Person B makes an attack on person A.
    *]Therefore A’s claim is false.

** Our discourse went something like this.**

    A: The earth is flat
B: Only to the ill informed mind.

B’s response to A is not an “ad hominem” because it is truly only the ill-informed who will continue to hold to this day that the earth is flat. No doubt there are still flat earthers around but it is equally no doubt that they are ill informed to hold such a view.

Now here is a real ad hominem.
A (the village idiot) : Water is H2O.
B (the second village idiot) : You are an idiot and you were caught stealing some pigs so therefore you are wrong, water is not H2O.

**For my reply to your statement to be guilty of "**ad hominem" it should have gone something like this.
AIL : The petros/petra controversy most certainly exists.
Bene’s evil twin🙂 : You are an ill-informed idiot and adulterer so therefore you are wrong, the petros/petra controversy does not exist.

But as you very well know, that is now how it transpired.

    I
** actually rebutted all the points you raised. When a person does that, addressing the arguments raised rather than the character of the other,** then it is not ad hominem.

And neither was I casting aspersions at you. To hold the view that you hold is indeed to be ill-informed. I refuted your points so that you will know why I said so.

There is nothing wrong with being ill-informed. None of us know everything so every one is ill-informed about one subject or another.
Continue to enjoy your echo chamber, and forgive me for expecting a civil dialogue.
If you are after a civil dialogue then all you have to do is rebut.

But truly, this is just an excuse. Pull at the heart strings ( I can hear the violin in the background) and cry foul (when there is no reason) and hopefully this will give you a dramatic exit and obscure the fact that you have run out of rebuttals a****nd perhaps by exiting thus, no one will notice this absence of a rational response.

Great tactic but unfortunately, I’m on to that one as well.

Unwillingness to debate? Well helloo, I rebutted all the points he raised. If anything IAL is is the one unwilling (but more like unable) to debate so pretends to be hurt so we will overlook the fact that he has no arguments forthcoming. Perhaps you had “selective reading syndrome” and so only saw the first sentence in a long two post rebuttal.

But that’s okay, that kind of irrational reasoning I am used to.

Hey, I just remembered that one is definitely a fallacy - an appeal to the emotion.🙂

BTW if he’s post is well reasoned then let’s have some more of that by way o a rebuttal. That’s how you debate.
just throw out insults and polemics.
Show where the insult is and the polemics are.
Don’t let that discourage you, Irish. There are plenty of good Catholics in here who are willing to disagree and yet still have civil discourse and friendship with Lutheran brethren.
Yes there are indeed. Don’t be discouraged. This site is a good site for learning. At least now you know what Ad hominem means 😉

im starting to understand how Joseph and Mary felt. ive been searching for Jesus700 for several days now, and i dont know where he is…hm…

I am probably a true feminist. I believe that what is essentially feminine should be valued. But what so called feminism has done has devalued what is essentially feminine and advanced the masculine cause by valuing that which is essentially masculine - demanding to be allowed to do “whatever the male does”.

So feminists are now for abortion (denying what really defines the women - this capacity and ability to give and nurture life) and look down on “stay at home mothers”. I would call that being masculinist 😃

And now they work towards the feminization of the male sex. What an upside down world we live in.

and i am certain that good Jewish women, including Peters wife, have had the same thought pattern as you. this is truly enlightened thinking. i always wondered why Catholic women, who truly practiced their faith, glowed. i have wonderful elderly ladies i pray the rosary with when im at home, who are absolutely radiant. and i believe they hold the same values as you. now i think i know. they radiate the light of Christ, and their Mother, Mary. Peace 🙂
