benedictus2:
Only in the ill informed mind.
When a man’s first recourse is the
ad hominem, it’s clear that no meaningful conversation will be possible.
It is clear that no meaningful dialogue is possible when AnIrishLutheran starts accusing me of ad hominem when it is clear you do not even know what ad hominem means.
So here’s a little lesson so you will be less “ill-informed” (hope you realize that I am being cheeky here)
Ad Hominem -a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument. Typically, this fallacy involves two steps. First, an attack against the character of person making the claim, her circumstances, or her actions is made (or the character, circumstances, or actions of the person reporting the claim). Second, this attack is taken to be evidence against the claim or argument the person in question is making (or presenting).
This type of “argument” has the following form:
*]Person A makes claim X.
*]Person B makes an attack on person A.
*]Therefore A’s claim is false.
** Our discourse went something like this.**
A: The earth is flat
B: Only to the ill informed mind.
B’s response to A is not an “ad hominem” because it is truly only the ill-informed who will continue to hold to this day that the earth is flat. No doubt there are still flat earthers around but it is equally no doubt that they are ill informed to hold such a view.
Now here is a real ad hominem.
A (the village idiot) : Water is H2O.
B (the second village idiot) : You are an idiot and you were caught stealing some pigs so therefore you are wrong, water is not H2O.
**For my reply to your statement to be guilty of "**ad hominem" it should have gone something like this.
AIL : The petros/petra controversy most certainly exists.
Bene’s evil twin
: You are an ill-informed idiot and adulterer so therefore you are wrong, the petros/petra controversy does not exist.
But as you very well know, that is now how it transpired.
I** actually rebutted all the points you raised. When a person does that, addressing the arguments raised rather than the character of the other,** then it is not ad hominem.
And neither was I casting aspersions at you. To hold the view that you hold is indeed to be ill-informed. I refuted your points so that you will know why I said so.
There is nothing wrong with being ill-informed. None of us know everything so every one is ill-informed about one subject or another.
Continue to enjoy your echo chamber, and forgive me for expecting a civil dialogue.
If you are after a civil dialogue then all you have to do is rebut.
But truly, this is just an excuse. Pull at the heart strings ( I can hear the violin in the background) and cry foul (when there is no reason) and hopefully this will give you a dramatic exit and obscure the fact that you have run out of rebuttals a****nd perhaps by exiting thus, no one will notice this absence of a rational response.
Great tactic but unfortunately, I’m on to that one as well.
