Well said…
Thanks, ibck. The “Rampant Films” people who made “Expelled” are very dishonest. Last June they called our office, saying they wanted to interview my program director, so I set up a filming location for them (in the science lab of my kids’ Catholic school), and had everything ready. At the last minute, we found out they were not in fact who they had claimed to be, and that they had lied to other scientists who had been interviewed under false pretenses. So we canceled the whole shoot. Creationists (YEC and ID) lie blatantly.

I’ll definitely be seeing this movie when it comes out on DVD. Although I hear Dawkins has significant screen time. 😦
How can you say that and not feel at least a little bit cheap?

I understand you disagree with Dawkins, but when is it ever a bad thing to hear the arguments of your antagonists? Suppressing what others have to say is not how a healthy debate is handled.

Intelligent Design is philosophy, not science. It is perfectly legitimate to talk about it in philosophy or religion classes, but until ID can propose an empirically falsifiable research program, there is no place for it in the laboratory. Ben Stein’s whining tantrum about scientists for not welcoming it will accomplish nothing. It’s that simple!
There’s no empiric standard of falsifiability for Darwinism, either, Kemosabe. Less of one, actually.

Theories as such are never falsifiable, I found out–they’re judged by their explanatory and predictive power only. Darwinism’s okay at explaining, not so much for predicting (certainly not speciation), so it and ID are on the same footing, except I hear some of ID’s specific, experimentally falsifiable challenges to Darwinism–irreduceable complexity of some structures–were disproven in a few experiments.

Which means it is science, but it’s been disproven, and we’re back with some flavor of Darwinism. I favor Gould, since his seems to match the fossil record best.

Expelled flunks the test

www.ExpelledExposed.com finds new creationist “documentary” lacking accuracy on many levels

Oakland, California, April 15, 2008 * Millions of dollars have been spent promoting Ben Stein’s Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed to fundamentalist church groups, but that money would have been better spent on fact checkers. www.ExpelledExposed.com, a website launched today by the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), reveals the truth behind the creationist movie’s misrepresentations.

“Creationists have been making the same arguments for decades,” says Eugenie C. Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education. “They’ve gotten better at marketing these claims, but they’re no more valid now than during the Scopes trial of the 1920s. Creationists have been predicting the death of evolution for over a century, yet it is constantly affirmed by evidence from fields Darwin could never have imagined.” Given the damning assessment at www.ExpelledExposed.com, Scott adds, “Perhaps the filmmakers should have spent more time hitting the books, instead of beating up on hardworking scientists.”

Throughout the movie, Ben Stein claims that “Big Science” represses intelligent design to advance an atheistic agenda, but NCSE doesn’t buy it. “There are many successful evolutionary biologists who are also people of faith, and a host of people of faith who regard intelligent design as a misconceived and harmful rejection of science. In attempting to pit Christianity against science, Expelled misrepresents both.”

“We reviewed public records and reports on the intelligent design promoters who were supposedly discriminated against, and we discovered that the claims that they lost their jobs over intelligent design are unsupported,” explains Josh Rosenau, a biologist at NCSE. “That said, professors who aren’t making advances in their field, editors who disregard their journal’s established practices, and lecturers who repeat creationist falsehoods shouldn’t be surprised if they have trouble holding jobs. These people weren’t expelled; they flunked out.” www.ExpelledExposed.com contains information about the “martyrs” from Expelled, and also of real scientists who successfully challenged established science. “The difference,” NCSE researcher Carrie Sager observes, “is that real scientists back their challenges with experimental results. Results are what changed minds, forced textbook revisions, and earned Nobel Prizes.”

More insidious are the movie’s attempts to link evolution to the Holocaust. Susan Spath, a historian of science at NCSE, comments: “The implication that Darwin led to Nazism and the Holocaust is an irresponsible misrepresentation of a terrible history. Hitler abused many things, including science, and Expelled is wrong to shift blame off his shoulders and onto evolution.” www.ExpelledExposed.com quotes the Anti-Defamation League’s Abe Foxman, who described similar claims in a previous creationist movie as “an outrageous and shoddy attempt … to trivialize the horrors of the Holocaust.”

The National Center for Science Education is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending the teaching of evolution in the public schools. The NCSE maintains its archive of source material on the history of creationism at its Oakland, California, headquarters. On the web at www.ncseweb.org. www.ExpelledExposed.com is a resource for journalists, teachers, and curious moviegoers who want the full story behind Expelled.

I never knew Ben Stein was a Creationist. He always struck me as a lapsed insert religion] who suffered from a bad case of modern liberalism. Kind of like a Bill Maher type.
Yes, but he is a long-time conservative. Heck, he used to be a speech-writer for Richard Nixon.

It will be interesting to see how the film does at the box office. It has a very large opening (1,800 screens) for a documentary. But the ads running on Comedy Central don’t really tell a person what the movie is about - which is a bad sign in my estimation. My guess is that the producers are counting on pulling in lots of cash opening weekend, before word of mouth quickly kills attendence.

On the other hand, perhaps the religious right will come out in droves as they did with Mel Gibson’s movie about Christ.

Reviews at Rotten Tomatoes are few at the moment - ten in total.
But they are 9:1 against the film. rottentomatoes.com/m/expelled_no_intelligence_allowed/

Dale, actually they aren’t yet up to 1,100 screens. In some cinemas it’s a one-showing thing; others have longer runs.

Petrus, thank you for the correction. I’m not sure where I got the larger number. :o

Dale, we’re putting together an office pool about which movie will generate a higher box office take this weekend: Expelled,: No Intelligence Allowed, or Zombie Strippers.

After all, Zombie Strippers has some interesting themes in science and religion: what is a person; human arrogance in trying to out-do God’s creation, etc.!

Great movie. I love that he is being called a “Creationist.” Ha ha… You got to see the movie.

Liars and cheats they are, representatives of the antithesis of Catholic values!

have you seen the film?

The pervasive theme is one of open inquiry and freedom to explore alternatives. That is, in fact, what Darwin was doing when he first theorized evolution.

Ah, but it is only a limited release - it isn’t showing around here. Besides, I think I’ve driven through Sartre, Nebraska. It might be too scary to see such events taking place so close to home.

😉

Expelled did reasonably well yesterday. Box Office Mojo has it down for $1.2 million gross, with an average of $1,141 per screen.

What Ben Stein and Mark Mathis did in Expelled was to have biology represented only by the most obnoxious of atheist types – Richard Dawkins and PZ Myers. There interviewed none of the hundeds of Catholic and thousands of Christian biolgoists working quietly in American universities.
Well, I haven’t seen the movie, so perhaps you know more about this than I do.

But what I’ve read about it didn’t indicate that Stein and Mathis were attacking biology. Biology is a huge field, and “evolution by random mutation and natural selection” is only a small part of it.

i think it’s just a movie that might or might not be funny. I think stein can be funny. so i guess i’ll go and see it for that reason. i don’t think it is meant to be taken serious by either side. Just goes to show how much people get worked up over evolution. Catholics shouldn’t try n prove God with it and evolutionist shouldn’t try and disprove God with it. because neither can be done.

How will our lives as centrists – Catholics and other Christians who accept evolution be made any easier …
The movie does point out that liberal Christians have made common cause with atheists in their defense of evolution and that the atheistic-Darwinists will use (manipulate?) the support that they get from the Christian left.

Expelled won’t change any of that. Evolutionism is only one plank in the liberal Christian platform and I can’t see it being threatened by ID. To suggest that Expelled will “undo” all the work of liberal Christianity over the past several decades is assigning the movie a lot more influence than even I could hope it would have.

Don’t worry, dissenting Christianity has a long life ahead of it. Perhaps the only thing that will kill it is the dissolution of Christianity itself and the resultant acceptance of atheism by the Christian left.

According to Box Office Mojo, Expelled did a bit worse yesterday, grossing a bit under $1 million for an average of $941 per screen.

He does that quite a lot. Yes, it’s arrogant and others have mentioned the same thing.
I’ve noticed that even good Christians that hang out with the atheists a lot (for example, biologists) tend to be that way. I have no doubt that their noble intent might be to bring atheists to God, but the effort itself may be corrosive to the soul. Hence Pride, Arrogance, etc.

I’m not making this up about biologists…

from this article:
209.85.173.104/search?q=cache…ient=firefox-a

Looking at the top 20 BA granting fields, we find that atheists and agnostics are more common in some disciplines than others. Psychology and biology have the highest proportion of atheists and agnostics, at about 61 percent. Not far behind is mechanical engineering, 50 percent of whose professors are atheists or agnostics. Behind that is economics, political
science, and computer science, with about 40 percent of professors falling into this category each. At the other end of the spectrum, 63 percent of accounting professors,
56.8 percent of elementary education professors, 48.6 percent of professors of finance, 46.5 percent of marketing professors, 46.2 percent of art professors and professors of criminal justice, and 44.4 percent of professors of nursing say they have no doubt that God exists.

Hey, guess who is most exposed to Darwinism, which as we’ve all been told is God neutral? Biologists?

And then there’s the Darwin to Freud connection. So that probably accounts for the Psychologists.
