I saw the screening for The Dark Knight last night. Here are some spoilers, so don’t read if you don’t want to know what happens.
What is left of the mob turns to the Joker to try and kill Batman, even though they know he has been targeting their banks in his robberies. After being paid to kill Batman, the Joker begins making demands that Batman turns himself in, unmasked, or people will die everyday that he refuses.
Nobody close to Batman is safe in this film. One character looks to have been killed, one character is killed and another becomes a villain almost as bad as the Joker.
Heath Ledger did an excellent job as the Joker. His Joker is much different than Jack Nicholson’s. Whereas the previous Joker was funny, while murderous and psychotic, this Joker is just…evil. He thinks himself as funny, but has no redeeming value whatsoever. At least one could sympathize with Jack Nicholson’s Joker because he was betrayed (although that character was a gangster to begin with).
The only really graphic part of the movie is nothing the Joker himself does, but what happens to the villain he helps create. When you first see this new villain’s face, it will shock you for a minute.
During the course of the film, Bruce Wayne debates whether it is worth it to continue being Batman even when Alfred encourages him to keep going. This struggle isn’t unlike Spider-Man’s struggle in Spider-Man 2, although Peter Parker wasn’t losing friends to enemies in that film like Batman was losing friends in this film.
Parents might want to preview this film before taking those under 13 just to be on the safe side.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was better than Batman Begins.
