My little rant on all this:

I recently watched a Chesterton - The Apostle of Common Sense - episode. This particular episode quoted Chesterton on some of the hows and whys behind the bashing of the catholic church. Unforunately I forget quotes are easily as I forget jokes. The basic premise Chesterton was making was that where the church is on such a high petistle, in fact the highest where it has the entirety of Truth, it becomes a target for those who do not desire or can’t face this Truth.

In the case of the scandal in the church, the perpetrators were priests. Priests are human beings who can make awful dreadful even criminal mistakes and evil doings. In these cases the priests did just that, commit crimes and evil doings. Some bishops may have also committed crimes in conducting a support system for the priests.

For someone who wishes to undermine the Truth, therfore embattle the church, they have a weapon to do so. They can unfortunately attack the church through these men who committed these crimes. In an effort to undermine the church they keep using this same weapon over and over.

The church remains the Bride of Christ, regardless of the sins of the body of the church. The church is made up of sinners (and often times dreadfull sinners), not saints.

The way to attack the Truth, the way to attack the church is to attack it’s sinners. This is because the Truth, the church, the Bride of Christ cannot be successfully attacked.

The saddest part of this is that these misdirected attacks will succeed in knocking uninformed, uneducated people who may be on the fence, off, in the wrong direction, away from the church.

Why doesn’t the Presidency of the United States of America come under attack because of the crimes of past presidents? In these cases the people are attacked, and rightfully so. The Presidency is still held in high esteem.

This is my concern as well. As soon as this “documentary” breaks, those who itch for fodder will not waste a second to use it and perhaps confuse those in the Church and discourage those on their way to the Church. I hope our apologists are gearing up because I certainly need ammo.

This is a valid point that is always overlooked by Church haters. Why aren’t physicians as a whole reviled when one makes a heinous mistake? Or psychiatry in general (God knows their sins are legion!)? Or teachers, or etc…

I’m there at the Lion’s Gate discussion board for that film, ripping away. Join in the fun.

I left a post showing the 100,000 victims from the trailer is likely about 99,900 too high. With help from the Catholic League report

Catholic League report Feb 2004 on clergy abuse

You’re a strong person if you can hang with that crowd! They are so anti-Catholic… I can’t believe it. I gave up when they insisted that we hate the Bible and worship dead people.

It just makes we weary and sad.

I think there is already so much misconception about our Faith… and in addition to all of that we have the very real fact that the molesting Priests were shuffled around to abuse again… and again… and again.

It’s makes me feel so defeated. 😦

So many great replies in here. Kudos josemaria and Tantum ergo!

DWPC, do you honestly believe there was no scandal in the Church before Vatican II? If so, you need to study history. As someone stated, many of these priest and bishops grew up under and was trained pre-Vatican II. Vatican II is, and we’re not going back.

I think the film could have been interesting if not so biased. (I judge this based on the slanted trailer.) A movie that examines the scandal by jumping between two story lines would have been interesting. One story line would be what they have now. The other would be an examination of the reports generated from the events, interviews with bishops (if possible), and what the bishops have implemented since the scandal broke, like the SAFE environment program. But I doubt any of this is covered.

Yes, any abuse is horrible. But I tried to put it in perspective, in my usual arrogant way (with stats from The Catholic League). I may not last long… but I left a few more notes. The movie does not appear to be playing in the Tampa Bay area and I may not drive the 300 miles to the closest theatre in Florida to see it.

Lord have mercy on us all. Things like this make me so TORN…I’ve met His Eminence, and was denied a blessing from him because I was with a pro-life group…I watched him allow Buddhists and Seiks and who knows what else worship in that monstrosity of a Cathedral that he built with money that should be going toward the many victims of abuse in his diocese…and I know that his laxity on moral issues probably has everything to do with his harboring sexual predators…but my heart ACHES for Holy Mother Church when I see things like this. Should these things come out in the open, absolutely, especially when His Eminence ignores the cries of the souls he is supposed to be shepherding…but it kills me to think of the hatred that the whole Church will come under because of the grievous actions of Cardinal Mahoney and others like him. I don’t think I could sit through this film…I don’t think I could handle it.

I love how they focus on that idiot priest.
Even when a priest is in error we should never attack them but pray for them and do penance for them that they could return to Gods grace. God alone will be his judge.

“Pray for the Priests. Pray with might and do not cease praying for the devil wants their downfall.”

I don’t ACTUALLY love the fact that they’re focussing on Mahony. I was being sarcastic. I can’t believe they’re trying to bash the church by building their agenda on THAT guy. I don’t love it one bit.

I don’t approve of the things Cardinal Mahoney has done, but in this case, what they are doing to him is unnacceptable.

What they are doing to him???
He did it all by himself…he brought this on himself…no one else!
