Does anyone know if there is a source for Catholic youth discussion questions about this movie? Some of the older members of our HS youth group are thinking about going as a group, and I think it would be a great opportunity for catechesis.

I’m really looking forward to this movie. I think it might be showing at our local Cinetopia (very big screens and better than HD resolution), but I can’t confirm that yet.

Besides being a fantastic Catholic-themed movie, it is something anyone who values freedom will enjoy.

The trailers certainly look good…I give the trailers a triple-wide with a porch rating.

The film’s official US website has a listing of theaters where the movie will be opening. These sort of listings often are not updated, so they aren’t always comprehensive, but I think they tend not to list false locations.

I can’t post a direct link to the Find A Theater locater, but the button for it is located in the upper right hand corner of the official website

According to the website, one of the two Cinetopia locations will be showing this film.

Another pleasant surprise is that not one, but two, locations in Iowa will be showing it. And not only is one within driving distance, but happens to be in a nice theater (one that is clean, new and not a shoebox)

I am going to make an effort to see this. 🙂

Yes, but there is nothing on the Cinetopia site. I hope it is accurate.

Ignatius Press is publishing a companion book in English and Spanish:

ignatius.com/Products/FGGL-P/for-greater-glory-the-true-story-of-cristiada.aspx?src=ipfb

Now you’ll go much deeper into the exciting history behind the movie with this fact-filled companion book – and gain important insight into the on-going fight for religious freedom today. This is the Official Companion Book to the epic film. Lavishly illustrated with photos from the film and with historical photos.

As you read you’ll discover:

• Who were the Cristeros?
• What drove the Mexican government to ruthlessly persecute Catholics?
• Can a priest “wage war”
• What role did groups like the Knights of Columbus play in this armed resistance?
• Why did thousands of Catholics - priests, religious, lay people - willingly give their lives in the Cristiada?
• What role did the U.S. play in ending this bitter conflict?
• What did the Pope do to support the Church in Mexico?
• Which characters in the movie went on to become Catholic saints and blesseds in real life?
• Why is this dramatic episode of history so little known today?
• What is the lesson of the Cristiada for those struggling for religious freedom today?

If you mean the Galaxy 16 in Cedar Rapids, then yes, and I am a bit envious that you get to see it in that theater! I’m hoping it comes to Dubuque, but it’s a long movie, and theaters here don’t seem to like long movies unless they’re blockbusters.

I saw one of the mexican stars on this film being interviewed on GMA.He stated that he and his Mexican friends didnt know about this historical event,as this was included in their historical books,by order of the govt.I will definetely watch this flick together w/ my friends.

I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts!

By the way, I’m from southeast Tennessee but I’m still cool with hearing your Alabama thoughts. 😉
👍😃
Gooo Big Orange!
UTK alum here

I also am looking forward to seeing this, I may just shell the $ to support it in the theatre, and that’s big for me. I’m usually a rent the DVD kind of guy.

Yes, that is the one. I haven’t been there in three years or so, but was very impressed by it.

Dubuque would seem a natural pick since the majority of residents in the city, and in the surrounding counties, are Catholic. I think it odd that it wasn’t chosen.

Then again, there are four theaters listed for Omaha, Nebraska plus Bellvue, Nebraska (which is practically in Omaha) plus Council Bluffs, Iowa (which is right across the river from Omaha.) I wonder what kind of planning went into selecting theater locations.

I almost think that the large number of Catholics in the area works against a movie like this. I moved here from Iowa City (known affectionately as “The People’s Republic of Iowa City”). The anti-Christian sentiment in that town is palpable. One result of that (I believe) is that Confession times at St. Mary’s downtown last for two hours on Saturday morning and there is a line the entire time; and at St. Wenceslaus across town, confession begins an hour before Mass and it’s not uncommon for people to still be waiting in line when the priest has to stop and get ready for Mass. Here in Dubuque, with the large Catholic population, you’re lucky to see three people in line for confession, assuming the priest hasn’t forgotten. There’s a sense of complacency that both frustrates and frightens me. I want the movie to come here in the hopes that it will start shaking the complacency out of the people; but part of me is convinced that the people wouldn’t bother to come see it.

Maybe if I called some of the Evangelicals to come see it…

Oh, and I think there are all the theaters in Omaha and environs because there’s a significant Hispanic population there. Don’t know how many of them are of Mexican descent, but this is a movie that would definitely appeal to them.

It’s supposed to rain here tomorrow. Normally I’d be a tad depressed about this being a boater. But all the more reason to get out see this movie !

Said by a (generally speaking) non-movie goer. 🙂

Steve Greydanus, the film reviewer for National Catholic Register, and owner of the DecentFilms.com website, has published his review. He gives it three stars.

According to Greydanus, the subject matter is topical and has long been overlooked. On the other hand, it suffers from poor character development, with little of the depth or complexity of real life persons.

He concludes:
The magnitude of the conflict around religious freedom today is something no one could have predicted when production began on For Greater Glory. Some might call the film’s timing providential. I wouldn’t argue with them. For Greater Glory is the right movie at the right time.

My husband and I just got back from seeing this movie. There were only a total of 7 people there for the 1:20 pm matinee. I’m glad we went. I don’t think there was a dry eye among any of us. I thought it was very professionally done, the costumes, the scenery, the actors were all wonderful. There are a lot of horrific but necessary scenes in order to get the story told and this is the reason for the R rating. I would have given the actors and the movie a standing ovation but it just really didn’t seem appropriate because of still being caught up in the emotion. Also , there were photographs and history updates still being scrolled on the screen keeping our interest. Be sure to take a handkerchief.
I give it 5 stars for the excellent portrayal of a true story.

I just got back from this movie about 2 hours ago. I loved, loved it!! It is a true story in the 1920’s. Like one of the reviewers said, the characters were not developed much at all but this did not bother me. It was so great to watch Catholics fighting for their religious rights!! I was rooting for them! Christo Rey! The actors were good and believable too. Very inspiring movie!

I’m planning on getting to the theater sometime this week after work: My calendar was full prior to the release notice. From what I understand, it’s really my favorite movie genre–a big, sweeping historical epic film, meaning, even *if * I were a stone atheist, which I’m not, I’d still go and see it. It’s great to see that it is basically a Catholic movie. And as a loyal cradle Catholic, and a red-blooded American, who cherishes our God given freedom of religion as guaranteed by the United States Constitution, I think the film’s release coinciding so closely with the bishops’ pronouncement on the HHS mandates is very timely.

In other words, let’s not let that kind of government interference in matters of the Church happen here!

Having just gotten back from the MASH Bash (a benefit party for the Red Cross,) I’m slightly tipsy, but after viewing the “For Greater Glory” trailer, I just want to stand up and scream, “Viva Christo Rey!” Please pardon my emotionalism!
