I saw it last night on a date night with my wife, we were both excited about this movie. We learned initially about this time period from a documentary from Bob & Penny Lord about the Life of Father Blessed Miguel Pro. We read about his life and even participated in a play we did about his life and my son was an extra in the play at only 14 days old.🙂 The Mother of a friend of ours actually attended a clandestine mass given by Father Pro. So we know a little about this time period.

I love what Dos Corazones is doing, this is a major step forward. You have a first time director and a pretty talented cast; but there is still growing pains involved. Professional reviewers complained about character development and a missed opportunity given such a compelling and rich subject matter and having a very talented cast at their disposal. I enjoyed the movie, I loved how it brings to life such a forgotten brutal time in human history.

The movie theater was about 25% full, not a great attendance, but that is par for the course in my area. It is worth seeing, but for movie purist you will not see the stuff of academy awards. It is not a historically precise re-telling; it is more like a Ridley Scott approach to history.

I think eventually Dos Corazones will have a critically acclaimed hit in the US, but it will likely not be this effort. However, I hope many people go see this so Dos Corazones can continue what they are doing.

God Bless,

**I just saw this movie today with my family

I enjoyed it, I wish the ending was more clarified, as to what happened to Calles, and the General

it was Good overall, if your into a movie with Gratuitous violence you won’t particularly find it here, although their are plenty of Action packed scenes

some parts are hard to watch, especially with Joselito the young 13yr old martyr -

the pictures of the real Cristero’s at the end was awesome

and it made me ask alot of questions, now im off to research the History

Viva Cristo Rey

Maybe if I called some of the Evangelicals to come see it…
Well, guess what? They’d come if they listened to the same Christian radio station that I do. As a matter of fact, right after I saw “For Greater Glory,” I was driving home and listening to this Protestant-run radio station … the news came on, and the reporter talked about the movie as “the history of what happened in Mexico after they lost their religious freedom,” urging Evangelicals to go see it.

Wow! 🙂

I just saw the movie today, and it was great. I highly recommend it.

Great movie. I almost cried in some of the scenes…ok maybe I cried more than I would admit. I wish it had a cleaner ending and more character development. I went to go see it with my mom and that is all we talked about on our way home. She is from Mexico and does not remember ever learning about this war in school.

As usually, the main stream media are doing their best ridicule this excellent film. But then that is to be expected by the secular godless media, who do not want anything good, and try to discourage people from supporting a really great film. The media did the same thing with “October Baby”, which made fools out of the so-called “critics”. And now “For Greater Glory” will the leave those same critics with egg all over their faces once again.

My wife and I, and our daughter saw the movie last night at the evening showing, and the theater was full. We thought the movie was fabulous and very inspirational. The film does a great job of contrasting the weakness and shortcomings of the human condition, with the more noble and exemplary conduct, and demonstration of heroic virtue that individuals are capable of rising to. Make sure you stay for the credits, as they give a history of the important figures portrayed in the film, including those who were canonized by the Church. The audience, including several priests, gave a hardy round of applause at the end. Please encourage your pastors to see it.

The movie is rated R for violence, and there have been some concerns expressed in the press about that, but after seeing the film we do not think this is a serious issue. Yes, war is violent, and the film does not try to hide that. We felt, however, that the violence shown was not overdone, and was portrayed with restraint, being used only to the extent necessary to convey to the viewer the harshness of the Mexican government’s tyrannical suppression of the Church. We did not find it offensive, as is the case with so many other films today. I have seen far worse violence on TV.

take note however, this is not a movie for young children! High school students, depending on their maturity level, should be OK. As part of its review of the film, Catholic News Service put it this way: “For Greater Glory” is probably acceptable for mature adolescents – and may, indeed, do them a world of good! Please see the review at: catholicnews.com/data/movies/12mv060.htm

Our Catholic faith teaches that we are to teach by example and this film provides a number of “teaching moments” that are very inspirational, especially for younger generations. Young people (within the age restrictions listed above) need to see this film, both for its role model value, and to gain a better understanding of the seriousness of the current government attacks on the Church. If you know any teachers or youth group leaders, please tell them to encourage their students to see this movie.

History has shown that the first step of an oppressive regime is to shut down the Church, and then will follow an attack on the civil liberties of all citizens. This is a fact that General Gorostieta knew well. I think it is very timely that this movie was released now, when our country is experiencing attacks on the Church, and on the Feast day of Saint Justin, Martyr.

I’ll be seeing it later today but looking at reviews I see it got one tomato at Rotten Tomatoes. Might not hurt for you all (& your friends) to click on over & give it a good review.

This was on my local PBS station last night.

I hope to see the movie this weekend.
I am impressed that your local PBS station would have showed this. I can’t imagine my local area PBS stations doing the same; to be fair I do not have cable or use a TV guide so if they showed I would not know. We heard EWTN was showing the documentary and saw it online; but t was a little grainy and was nice to see again via the link you posted. Thank You.

I hope Dos Corazones release this movie after it run on DVD, we are so buying it, their last effort “The Greatest Miracle” was released in only a Spanish version; good for me but the the rest of my family would not be able to follow it.

God Bless

The estimates for the weekend box office put the film at # 10 w/ $ 1.8 million. Preety good for an independent film. Should guarantee it a second week in theatrs.

My wife and I went to see the movie yesterday. I knew a little bit about the history of Catholic repression and persecution at the hands of the Mexican Government during the early 1900s. My wife who is latino never even heard about the event. We were both fascinated with the movie. It reminded me of the old western movies with John Wayne. So many of the scenes in the movie were so (name removed by moderator)irational. And I thought the each actor/actress portrayed their character very well. I thought to myself that so much of Church history is unknown to her own people. I pray that this may be the beginning of a new period where Catholic filmmakers create beautiful and moving productions based on the history of Catholics. There are so many inspiring stories (fact based) that could be used to show why we believe and put are faith in God everyday.

Just got back from the 7:45PM showing in Westminster, Colorado. This is a great movie that everyone should see. For Greater Glory is a moving drama about an unknown period in history. Beautiful cinematography, marvelous production values and a faith-filled script make this epic worth seeing. Sadly, the theater had only about a dozen people in the audience.

Folks in my family were put off by the R rating and mistaken rumor about a scene with partial nudity. After seeing it, I’m certain about five reasons why the MPAA gave it an undeserved R (editorial comments in italics):

  1. *]The martyring of Blessed José Luis Sánchez del Río [which was not overdone]
*]Battlefield violence [much less than any first person shooter on Xbox]
*]Most of the characters smoke “In May 2007, the MPAA announced that depictions of cigarette smoking would be considered in a film’s rating.”]
*]The Hollywood establishment doesn’t want a Catholic movie about religious freedom right now
    *]The power of Darkness

Don’t let the R rating influence your decision to go see this movie. Go - see this movie in the theater. It is worth your time.

    ¡Viva Cristo Rey!

  1. Thank you for the review and info…I really hope it shows here in Australia sometime soon. 🙂

I saw this movie on Saturday morning, and cannot stop thinking about it or recommend it enough!

I just saw this movie today with my family
I enjoyed it, I wish the ending was more clarified, as to what happened to Calles, and the General
The General died that day. He was killed on June 2, 1929. Had he not stayed behind to help the wounded priest, he might have gotten away. He chose the more noble path. Calles left office shortly after that.

I saw this movie last night. I wouldn’t recommend seeing it at 10:20p like I did…we got out at almost 1a.

The movie was awesome though. Andy Garcia, Peter O’Toole, the kid that played Jose…they were all awesome.

I wouldn’t necessarily allow younger kids to see this, no younger than 12 or 13. But this is definitely a movie that all should see. It made me very proud to be a Catholic.

  1. This review is spot on!

In consideration of what is on TV and cable, this movie could have been rated PG-13, even though the themes are for mature audiences. I can see 11-15 year-olds finding this movie to be valuable.

I have seen it twice (a premier event by Relevant Radio two weeks ago, and in our local theater).
