well thats like asking how is leading the homeless over a cliff worse than leading them to a soup kitchen. one way has hope for life the other is to death.

and prayers are never a waste, so like it or not you’re getting them:)

I’ve never seen Maher in anything else, so I don’t know how he is in other contexts, but in this movie he was funny.

How is evangelizing people to atheism any worse than evangelizing people to the Christian faith?

I don’t need your prayers…I appreciate your intentions, but they’re wasted on me.
I have to admit, when I read your post ,my first thought was troll … but hey, I thought "I can be wrong "… decided your post was not really worth responding to …

But now this post … I can tell you are young and I just can’t believe that in this culture with Comedy Central and saturday noght live [2 shows I never watch but I am aware of and have seen the clips on other programs and of course the advertizing and promos for them] … that you have never heard of Maher or seen his schtick … he’e been on many news programs, Larry King [a show I also don’t watch] but am aware of …

Your post and evangelism for atheism will not move faithful Christians away from Jesus … so though I cannot know what your purpose for joining CAF is ???..

IF it is gaining “converts” to un-belief… you will reap greater converts on some other type of forum [like a democratic forum?] than here at CAF where Christ Rules and we understand the reality of ‘communing’ with Christ in the Eucharist … well at least that is my opinion …

And I, too, will pray for you:signofcross: … your post is a cry for prayer …

Bill Maher hangs out at the Playboy Mansion. Bill Maher does not believe in God. Chicken or the egg?

We all believe what we want, based on how we want to live.

Those who do good and seek Jesus will find him.

Smells like troll to me, maybe works in Maher’s PR dept.

Who really needs to be told ‘its OK not to believe’ in the modern world, where religion has been so totally marginalized?

Hi Everyone,

I’m a former member of this forum. I stopped posting here when I began to become disillusioned with Catholocism and Christianity in general. I decided to come back for a visit to see what was being said about the new movie Religulous, and after reading some of the threads about it, I thought I would offer up my perspective of the movie.

I attended Church with my family since I was small, and up until fairly recently I went to a Bible study once a week. But gradually as I grew up I began to look at the world through a more critical eye. I was always very naive and quick to accept what was told to me, but I now know to question things and research things. I don’t want to be a sheep that’s shepherded through life.

So with my new outlook on life, I began to question everything, so naturally I began to question my religious beliefs and my faith. I began to see that the circles I was in were full of judgment and shame, and I began to realize that I didn’t believe what I said I believed anymore.

However it’s not easy to drop religion out of your life. I have dropped it out of my heart, and I’m much happier for it, but since a lot of my friends and family have these beliefs, I have felt like I need to hide the fact that I’m now Atheist from them. People make you feel ashamed.

So the reason I named this thread “Thanks to Bill Maher” is that he has created a movie that is telling people like me that it’s okay not to believe.

If you have not seen the movie, it is about Maher’s personal rejection of religion. The theme of the movie is to show people that it is responsible to have doubt and to question things. One of my favourite quotes from the movie is the lady that says “I don’t know anything about politics, but I’ll vote for George Bush because of his faith”…well look where that’s gotten us.

Maher questions the doctrine and the beliefs of all religions. This is something that’s a major faux-pas pretty much anywhere you go, but it’s really sad that people should be made to feel like they can’t question these things.

This movie has given me confidence in myself so that I can come out of the closet as an ex-Catholic, and I don’t see anything wrong with it…not to mention it was very funny and entertaining!

I hope that came out cohesively…but I welcome questions. Thanks for reading 🙂
I guess we should include you in our prayers.

Bill, step away from the computer. Step away from Lucifer!

We’re prayin’ anyway! So there!

Maybe it’s OK in your world and my world, but not everyone’s experience is like that. If you come from a world where your family is one religion and all your friends are one religion and you leave that religion, especially if you do it in a public way, it can be really, really awkward. In the movie, the ex-Mormons mention that. How isolating that experience can be.

Why be disappointed? The media loathes religion (with the exception of pagan earth-worship) and hates the Catholic church in particular.

Such as? I didn’t see any anti-religious comments. It was a well written and thoughtful piece, IMO.
The anti religious comments were from others commenting on the article not the article itself.😃 If you scroll down after the article you will see the comments!

That wasn’t charitable. 😦
Your right, maybe calling someone a moron isn’t charitable.

How bout this instead:

**"Bill Maher, you viper!

How can you speak good, when you are evil?

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good,
and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

I tell you,
on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter;
for by your words you will be justified,
and by your words you will be condemned." **

Better?
(Matt 12:34-37)

I went to see it last night with my brother…much ado about nothing. Some points were very humorous…some sad…some silly.

My brother and I were probably the youngest two guys in the theater…I’m 53 and he’s 48. Most everyone else looked about in their late 50-s to late 60’s. The group who sat next to us were “old hippies”…

I’m not a Bill Maher fan, but my brother was visiting from out of town and wanted to see it. I did enjoy it…it wasn’t offensive…although I could see how a “true believer” could be offended…especially when challenged with questions, some of the people he interviewed became irate and refused to be on camera.

He was thrown out of the Vatican…thrown off Temple Square in Utah…however he was allowed in a couple mosques.

He stuck mostly with fundamental Christians, Mormons, touched upon Catholicism, Judaism and Islam.

He interviewed a couple of priests…quite progressive priests it would seem.

As I said…much ado about nothing…

This man has blasphlemed over and over again; like you and I breathe air. How will he be dealt with? Only Our Father can answer this I know.
We have a clue from gospels like the one this weekend. It involved binding of hands and feet and being thrust into outer darkness with all the weeping and gnashing of teeth.

No, that isn’t better. Not only are you insulting Maher by calling him a snake, you are also passing judgement on Bill Maher by calling him evil. Twisting the words of Jesus Christ to vent your anger isn’t very Christian.

That said, I don’t care for Bill Maher’s humor and don’t intend on seeing this movie.

You can put me down for doing the same. This isn’t difficult to figure out. Maher is a blasphemer of the highest caliber. Blasphemy is a serious evil. Ergo, Maher is committed as a career to committing serious evil.

Now perhaps it is the grammar you object to where he is called evil instead of characterized as committing evil. Well, that is a very biblical way to describe people whom throughout the NT are called blasphemers, liars, adulterers, etc. But then the PC crowd hadn’t descended on the world, or ascended from the pit, yet.
