No, that isn’t better. Not only are you insulting Maher by calling him a snake, you are also passing judgement on Bill Maher by calling him evil. Twisting the words of Jesus Christ to vent your anger isn’t very Christian.

That said, I don’t care for Bill Maher’s humor and don’t intend on seeing this movie.

BTW - How is using the words of Christ un-Christlike? You said he twisted them. How?

Well, personally speaking, I still think the funniest thing I ever heard Bill Maher do was when a director friend of mine first moved to LA. He was, y’know, ‘networking’ at a party at a club, and found himself standing next to Maher at the bar. Maher promptly threw up on his shoes then wandered vaguely away, leaving my pal completely agog. 😃

‘Welcome to Hollywood, Alec?’ i asked.

‘Yeah…pretty much what I thought too, sigh…’ he said.

I couldn’t help but laugh. :o

I’ll probably watch this movie on DVD, but honestly, Bill Maher is a second rate comedian in my opinion and he goes too much for shock value.
Personally, I don’t believe in trashing the religious beliefs of another person, it’s like trampling on their rose garden in my opinion.
Maher has issues with religion and he’s trying to resolve them by bringing the rest of us into it, and he’s making money behind ridiculing the beliefs of others.
On second thought, I don’t want to see the video

It is clearly stated that while we cannot judge a man’s soul we can and SHOULD judge his actions.

We do NOT have to tolerate evil actions from anyone at any time.

Maher’s actions---- well. I won’t use that word here.

So far we have 9 pages of discussing a man who is in desperate need of prayer. Fervent, sincere and unending prayer. I ask all of you who have posted to please keep this man in your daily prayer as his immortal soul is in jeopardy. Jesus came to save the sinner. He wants us to pray for the sinner. If we really reflect, we will recognize that we too are in that category. So lets not only pray for Maher, but for each other and ourselves. Sincerely and fervently.

Because Christ has the ability to see into men’s souls and justly can call persons vipers and evil. FiremanFrank twisted the verses by removing the subject of Christ’s denunciation and replacing them with his own target. FiremanFrank may well be a fine Christian, but he doesn’t have the ability to see into others souls.

Now perhaps it is the grammar you object to where he is called evil instead of characterized as committing evil. Well, that is a very biblical way to describe people whom throughout the NT are called blasphemers, liars, adulterers, etc.
The Bible is divinely inspired and inerrant. We are not.

And the difference between condemning a sin and condemning a sinner is very large. Its not simply a matter of semantics.

Even though the Bible is divinely inspired, we can still emulate that which is in it. In fact, that is it’s purpose.

Stick to being PC if you want. David (who also was not God) had no problem calling people wicked. St. Paul had no problem with it. This occurs hundreds of times, even if you discount Christ’s words. If this type of language is good enough for them, it is good enough for me.
[Ps 9:17](http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=19&CHAP=9&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=17) The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
This is not the same as rendering final judgement that belongs to God.

It behooves us to know who are the evil and wicked people among us. Modern theology downplays the role of evil and emphasizes the good that is everyone. It is time we reverse the pendulum and swing it back the other way.

I hope you won’t all avoid seeing the movie. Knowledge is power, and when you know exactly what lies he tries to spread then you will be better prepared to defend yourselves verbally.

Common problem with debates these days is that people take it personally and show that. I completely understand how you can feel hurt, let down or even attacked by bigoted, pointless “mockumentaries” like this one, but its imperative you don’t turn to calling him a moron with fully explaining. Even if the explanation is “He is only showing the most extreme of examples. I think you’ll find there are crazy people who don’t believe in God. Catholics are different from ‘weirdo catholics’” (To paraphrase an Eddie Izzard observation, though his point was about transvestites)

Many people aim for the religious because the religious are easy targets. They… you… Believe in something with all your heart with such strength that no-one outside of religious communities can understand it. And what people don’t understand, they tend to dismiss. If you can bring yourself to be calm and collected while talking to the ignorant masses they will give ground, and then crumble. Or they will be ignored by the sane, intelligent people who will start to see, understand and even believe.

Hmm…More long-winded than I meant it to be…ah well, I’m sure my point was made somewhere there

What knowledge would I get out of watching trash???

Sorry, I have to shave my toenails that day.

OH, I think I can guess. I doubt he’s got anything to say that I haven’t already read (and responded to) at least a hundred times in the Catholics/non-Catholics forum.

So would you be complaining then to Jesus about the words that He chose to use? I hope you wouldn’t have made such a grievous error.

Your view of “twisting” is my view of an extremely accurate portrayal. I base that on Maher’s very own words and teachings. Over, and over, and over again, he gives me proof of his hateful anti-Christian beliefs.

That said, my thoughts/views on Maher remain entirely and completely unchanged until he himself changes his own ways.

There’s a bit of arrogance in those words jmcrae. You have no idea what he’ll show, or how far he’ll go to disprove, degrade or otherwise debase your religion.

And if you’ve been seeing the same arguments no doubt you’ve been giving the same answers. They haven’t worked before, why would they now?

This movie, if well made (luckily, apparently the end is a good 20-30 minutes of Bill ranting, which is enough to make anyone leave in disgust) could have been a nail in the coffin for organised religion in the west, and none of you seem to be taking that seriously. Christianity has spread through warfare, debate and state changes. Now warfare will no longer work, and all countries have their culture set the only thing that will gain you future generations is debate, I wish you’d take it seriously…

I have no intention of lining Maher’s pockets in any way, shape or form.

No, that is not really possible. Bill Maher is a comedian, not a philosopher. He has no credibility except to crack jokes. This movie will have no more impact on killing religion than that Al Gore flick did no ending the debate on global warming, Ben Stein changing solving the evolution issues or Michael Moore… well… doing anything at all. These type of movies are nothing but long commercials. No one goes to see them (mostly) except the converted. Then everyone in their clique pats each other on the back on really “making a difference.”

Still, I understand your reason for watching it and that should not be belittled. I will decline any action that gives this man credibility.

Sadly, comedians have far more credibility than philosophers because they have a far wider appeal. Everyone can understand jokes, and everyone can understand cheap shots. Few people understand transubstantiation, or Plato’s “Theory of the Forms”.

Still, I understand your reluctance to see the movie. I just urge that you watch it, even if only online (Giving him no money yet still seeing the film).

No one has answered my previous question. Why would I want or need to watch trash???

Apologies for the wait Deacon, didn’t see that message.

Why would you want to? Three reasons off the top of my head.
  1. To understand exactly how bad it is
  2. To see things from someone else’s point of view that you may better understand and forgive them, even while still disagreeing
  3. Because Bill did not become a successful comedian for nothing, and so there may well be some genuinely funny moments.

With my years, and the number of people I have counciled, I think I know this part better than you.
  1. To see things from someone else’s point of view that you may better understand and forgive them, even while still disagreeing
I have heard this man enough to know he has nothing to offer me. I pray for him. Forgiveness is from God for blasphemers.

Success in whose eyes. God’s or the world’s. Jesus rejected Satan when offered the world. Is this what BM is grasping for. While I do not judge him, and it is not for me to forgive him, I do pray for him, because he does have an immortal soul which is in extreme jeopardy.

Only, you are judging him. Quite severely it must be said.

What has jesus’ rejection of satan got to do with this? Satan was offering jesus ownership of the world, Bill is offering his tainted view of society and religion to the world. There is a slight difference.

This is straying off topic a bit. If you would care to PM me, I’ll be happy to continue there.
