Dumbo - innocence attacked for no reason but prejudice. A mother’s love and a child’s longing. “Baby Mine …” the saddest song in the world to me. How mothers should (and mostly DO feel about their special children). In this age when abortion gets justified … unto CHAMPIONED as an actual “good” as regards babies with birth defects … this kills me. Forgotten is God’s gift … in favor of … :nope:

Of Mice and Men - Similar to Dumbo is some respects, with an opposite and terrible ending. I saw this on TV at age 10 (Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney Jr. version) and was traumatized for days. Not just tears. My spirit was disturbed.

*I didn’t know the word Euthanasia at age 10. I didn’t understand (or buy) the justification of George killing Lenny to “save him” even then. Of course, when I was 10, in 1961, movies (especially those on TV) almost always had happy endings …

Old Yeller - Sort of coupled with “Of Mice and Men” in my mind, as I saw them both at age 10. Here, the hero-dog is euthanized after he becomes rabid and a threat to the frontier family. The young boy, whose dog “Yeller” is … must be the man of the family in his father’s temporary absence and keep the family safe. Disney’s eventual happy ending was needed for age 10 me.

The Long, Long, Trailer - Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball made this when they were actually (and obviously) still in love. Beautiful and funny, poignant and inciteful, the knowlege of their later divorce makes this an extra sad one for me.

Mary Poppins - as with Dumbo, it’s a song that kills me. “Feed the Birds,” where the heretofore aloof and uberefficient Mary shows her heart for the poor and actually teaches the children a compassion that far outweighs neatness, manners, and the more mundane virtues.

"Saints and apostles … " as part of a song lyric? And the children learn the lesson. Perhaps the biggest one of the story (one that elevates the whole story too, IMO).

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - The coming of age story of little Francie Nolan in early 20th century Brooklyn. It was somewhat like my Grandmother’s neighborhood in Chicago in the late 1950s … adding to its effect on me. A girls love for her father was the rare thing about this movie (seldom seen in films IMO). Happy tears come in this one as well as sad with the developing of her relationship with her mother.
