Brooklyn, it’s based on the book. First clue was that the exorcism student is a seminarian (can they do that?) as opposed to Fr Thomas who is a pastor. The next thing is it looks (by the trailers) that the teacher (Hopkins) gets possessed himself and the seminarian exorcises him. I’m guessing all this from what I saw in the trailers on the website. 🤷

To answer my own post, I did find this from a Catholic reviewer:
Soon “The Rite” will be made into a movie by New Line Cinema, starring Anthony Hopkins. . And rather than shock audiences a la “The Exorcist”, they hope to inform them. The devil is real and very powerful in this Culture of Death, but the power of the Church, when wielded by her priests in the Rite of Exorcism, is triumphant. I’ll be keeping you informed.

This sounds very hopeful, and if it is true, I would urge everyone to see this movie and read the book as well. I read it on my Kindle, so if anyone is into e-books, that is the way to go. The devil is very alive and well in our society and in the world, and people need to be made aware of this.

I second that. I borrowed it from the library so it’s available there too.

A film featuring Sir Anthony Hopkins is much more likely to be a psychological thriller rather than a science fiction horror movie, being the ilk of most movies related to exorcism. I look forward to seeing the movie and its stance of demonic possession since most major motion pictures, as already stated, make a mockery out of the subject.

that’s a nice review I’ll probably wait a couple weeks if I decide to see it in theaters so I make sure its not a bad movie from the catholic view point

Has anyone had a look at ‘The Rite’ trailer yet? It looks quite interesting but am I sinning for wanting to watch this movie?
Hi Everyone…the movie is based on the book of the same title by Matt Baglio. It is about the real life experiences of a priest who goes to Rome to train as an exorcist. The author tags along too. Anthony Hopkins plays the mentor priest. The author was a fallen away catholic, but after seeing what he saw and experience, he changed his life and became devout. I suggest to read the book first, you will learn alot and gain a new perspective on evil, and appreciate our faith and the one true Church.

this will be one of those movies Ill see first thing in the morning so I have the rest of the day to prepare for sleep cause If i watch this before I go to bed I won’t be able to sleep :rotfl:
:rotfl: My wife too, she would not even want to see the trailer. Have you read the book? What hooked me was the opening chapter, which has an account of a real exorcism, and three saints show up and join in prayer too…and one additional one show up…I will not reveal who it is…I will keep you in suspense. I wonder how this will be portrayed in the movie.

I think one has to be a priest to exorcise. I have read accounts where seminarians assist. Yes, the supposed student looks very young, and from the book, I thought Fr. Thomas was somewhat in his 50s or so.

The book was amazing. I expect to movie to be different (telling from the trailer), but I’d still like to see it out of curiosity. I hope it opens the eyes of non-believers because this is a very serious matter.

My daughter won’t watch exorcism movies 😃 She definately believes.

That opening chapter was awesome especially when the saints and the other two showed up. 😉

Agreed. And we will keep everyone is suspense who has not read the book…we will not reveal the final saint who showed up…😉

I wonder what has happened to Fr. Thomas’ first case. The book kind of left that hanging.

Yes, it’s better to read the book and truely enjoy it first. As far as Fr. Thomas is concerned, I’m thinking maybe they don’t want to sensationalize it because it is a serious matter and a private (the patient) one.

i’m the exact opposite I want to see this movie becuase I believes. but I also know that you have to be open to the demon for him to enter into you and posses you so I think ill be good and always in my pocket I have a st Benedict medal which was blessed, and they bless those with an exorcism prayer so demons won’t want to mess with me 🙂
