Yes, they are victims.

I agree that the extent of their “victimhood” is not great compared to someone who lived through the civil rights riots or has been raped or murdered.

But to imply that name-calling does not victimize people is incorrect.

It hurts to be called names. It really, really hurts.

Those of you who say to develop a tougher skin, well, it’s easier said than done. I’m 50 years old, and when I was a kid, I and my brother were called “cheap tv” by a group of bullies for several years while we walked to school. (Our family’s tv only received one channel.) They also made fun of my brother’s club foot.

It HURT and it still hurts to think about after all these years. I still have occasional self-esteem issues. I’m not crippled by it, but I still feel that sadness and pain whenever I remember me and my little brother struggling along with no one to defend us from those verbal attacks. I always used to dream of a superman who would come along and beat them up. It never happened.

Jesus Himself said that if we call someone a fool, we are guilty enough to go into the fire of hell. The Bible is filled with admonitions for us to speak softly and use kind words that build each other up.

Words can tear someone to shreds. I believe that women are very vulnerable to verbal attacks. A very strong, beautiful, accomplished, intelligent woman can be utterly demoralized when someone calls her a “prostitute.” Thick skin–hey, women are created by God to have soft skin, and it’s hard for us to develop callouses.

(BTW, I believe that men are just as susceptible to verbal attacks.)

So rather than telling people to “suck it up” and “develop thicker skins” and “accept that the world is a ****** place sometimes,” I believe that we should work to defend those who come under attack by bullies, and become their “superman.” I think we should jump in and help those who are victimized rather than telling them to “help themselves.” And I believe we should do whatever we can to teach bullies to “mind their manners” and stop using words that hurt. In this case, I think that asking for Imus to be fired is an appropriate response.

And yes, I agree that Sharpton and other African American leaders need to demand that various artists clean up their acts and speak love, not hate.
Perhaps this is a chance for people to bring this up, and perhaps the African American leaders will listen this time and take action, now that they’ve seen how much these words hurt women.

MSNBC drops simulcast of Don Imus show

NEW YORK - Talk show host Don Imus’ situation worsened Wednesday, when MSNBC announced that it would no longer simulcast the “Imus in the Morning” radio program.

I can’t stomach Imus. I think he’s awful. I DO think he said exactly how he thinks just as Mel and Mr. Richards did. Then they grovel instead of standing behind their remarks.
If they admitted they truely said what they were thinking, you could at least respect their honesty!
These people sell their souls for money and careers. It’s disgusting to watch and listen to.
I also think the media has blown this waaaaayyyyy out of proportion. It’s just the scandel of the moment.

So the secularist cynics occasionally eat their own. Hard to feel sorry for Imus.

They don’t need you to be their “superman.” They will always subject themselves to minorityhood, if they think they need a superman. They need to be humble enough to know that they are enough. If you do good, you’ve done good. If you have a need ask for help. If someone who comes along and has no idea how to access the situation and says you did bad, it in no way changes what you have done. Have some self-respect and security. If you want permission to do so, YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION, TAKE CREDIT FOR WHAT GOOD YOU HAVE DONE. YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE, I LOVE YOU AND THINK YOU ARE WONDERFUL JUST FOR YOU BEING YOU. IF SOMEONE CHOOSES TO BULLY YOU, THAT PROBABLY SPEAKS MORE ABOUT THAT PERSON, THAN YOU.

The thing that makes my blood boil about this situation, is people are wasting their time on unimportant things, than on the important.

If it makes anyone feel any better, verbally attack me. If you need to get it out, I’m here. Actually sometimes after considering the source, I take slams as a compliment.

Imus has apologized, he will apologize to the team and talk to them, I find it odd that they say they dont know what he will say. Hes going to say what he has said, he was stupid and realizes it. At least the girls reserved judgment unlike the media wolves if his job should be gone. Hopefully true conversation can follow, perhaps if the media isnt there it can. A reformed Imus will be a better Imus who can produce a good show. without the unsavory speech. But keep his cutting interviews.

I also noticed the team spoke more about women than race their statements were in good form. I also noted they said that where was the media when they were doing good? the media showed up after the comment but not before. But thats not getting the coverage. 😉

It is a speech issue its not a card, Imus is not a KKK member, just ignorant, but catering to a ignorant population. When Whoppi defended Ted Danson she said Intent was everything. But now the foots elsewhere shes forgotten that.

Free speech should be defended, its all the christian community has, as odd as it sounds, Imus should be allowed to say what he wants in the guidelines of FCC regulations (which he did not break btw) Christians cannot get on the band wagon, because one day its coming to roll over us, and our intolerance. Chip chip chip is how these things work. Remember Rosie? nothing is happening to her and nothing will.

ps Apparently Imus is going off the air on monday because Thursday there is a previously scheduled telethon for the Cancer Kids Ranch that Imus has. What with being a racist and all, allowing children of all races there, its a wonder he can survive it. Like said before actual racists dont do that, they just dont care what anyone thinks. So when you hear it, it was previously scheduled event not a publicity ploy.

The team said it wants Imus to sit down and get to know them and decide if they really are bad. Well I hope the teams handlers let them talk with Imus and get to know him and see if hes really that bad.

What opportunity, for Gods love to show. If the wolves’ dont kill it all before it happens.

It is very easy for anyone to talk themselves into being offended about something. Imus and company offended me many times with their Catholic bashing and I’ve only been Catholic for less than a week so it goes way back.

Anyway, we live in a fallen world where the playing field is not level. There is no sense of right and wrong or even a sense of justice really. Society tends to be utilitarian about everything.

If we realize that this is not our home and that we are spending an extremely small period of time in our “earth suit” here on this cosmic motor lodge, things make more sense. Our citizenship is in Heaven. We are called to be faithful here on behalf of our Savior. Instead of sitting around and feeling offended we should realize that it is normal down here and go feed somebody.

The necessary thing for Imus to do, when he meets with the Rutgers team, is to apologize. But this is not enough. Imus has a history of using racial slurs on his show. I heard a sound clip yesterday where he pledged, on air, never to use such slurs again - obviously he fell off the wagon.

He needs to make amends. I don’t know exactly what he should do - perhaps set up a scholarship. But it might be a good idea to make the offer and ask the team how he can atone for his cruel comments.
Let the person who is without sin, cast the first stone (paraphrased) Enough is enough!

Imus’ comments were totally inappropriate. But I don’t think they were racially motivated. Aren’t there white girls on the team too?

My comments on actually Imus’s comments are that, as far as a talk show host, I don’t really respect Imus enough to feel the need to make any.

I’m mainly upset at the team and the head coach that they in anyway thinks that the comments define them. Especially as far as the coach, she should be help improving and developing each teammate as a person. She takes the comments as if they are something that takes away from them. Imus was in no position to assess the team. His opinion has zero credibility. If she wants to develope leaders, well you are no leader if it knocks you off balance anytime anyone says something bad. They are not only disrespecting themselves, but each one on a team who I’m sure they care and love. An elite D1 team who have many good students I have to much respect for them to not say something, one doesn’t get into that position by being a hack.

Imus Radiothon gets funds despite furor

Imus acknowledged again that his remarks about the Rutgers team had been “really stupid.”

“There’s a difference between premeditated murder and the gun going off,” but the end result is the same, he said: “Somebody’s still dead.”

What about the winners they dont get to go on Opra, only the negative is being supported in this whole thing. so sad

It is easier to discount the motivation of this remark when you don’t look at the history of this show. What about calling Mrs. William Cohen “brown sugar” and playing the jungle fever music when she came on to talk about her book? What about when one of the men on the show said that Venus and Serena Williams should be in Nat’l Geographic rather than Playboy? These are just a few of the incidents over the years.

The one man on the show called the team “hardcore hos” and then Imus said “nappy-headed hos.” This clearly moved from just an insulting remark about women in general to a remark about the black women on the team. I saw only a couple of white players who had perfectly straight long hair. It would be a stretch of all reason to assume that he was talking about them.

I’m really surprised at the number of people who have said that Imus cannot possibly have had a racial component to his remarks when none of us was in his head and the remarks on their face have a racial component. “Nappy” is a term that I have never heard used to refer to anyone other than a black person’s hair.

I’m a black woman who can admit to myself that sometimes I make snap judgments in my head based on superficial things like the way someone looks or speaks or where they are from. I try to be aware of my biases so that I never treat anyone differently because of them. If I just denied that I ever had any biases in my mind, then I could never deal with them. I believe it is the same thing when we live in denial about people who make remarks like Imus. I think that living in denial that there are problems and then being defensive about labels are a couple of reasons that we cannot have a real conversation about racial and other issues in this country. Look at all of the name-calling of people with opposing views in reference to the war in Iraq.
