Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

Welcome to Part III of the music leaders’ thread.

Before posting, I would like to say a few things:
  1. The previous thread has been able to last for over a year. That is so because of the cooperation of the posters. Any arguments or off-topic posts puts us in the risk of getting the thread closed.
  2. EVERYBODY HAS AN OPINION! Just because you do not agree with what someone has to say, you do not have to argue it out over this thread and ruin everybody else’s time on here. IF YOU CHOOSE TO ARGUE WITH SOMEONE REGARDING ANY TOPIC AND/OR POST IN THIS THREAD, PLEASE PRIVATE MESSAGE THEM! It gets to the point of being selfish when two or more people argue about something and the thread gets closed and nobody else can post anymore.
  3. Finally and practically restating #2, please respect everyone that posts here. If you disagree with something they pick, something they suggest, something they bring up in this thread, that does not mean to argue about it 'til kingdom come. Again, senseless arguments put the thread in jeopardy. Please private message someone if you wish to argue.
Now, as you are about to post, I would like to thank all the posters that have contributed to the past thread and made it what it was. 1,003 total posts. You guys are awesome!
 
Although February 2, the Solemnity of the Presentation of the Lord, falls on a Wednesday this year, our parish will be having a special evening Mass followed by a small gathering.

Here is what I have suggested:

Entrance Processional: Lift Up Ye Heads, O Mighty Gates
Offertory: Viva, Viva Jesus Mi Amor or What Child Is This
Communion: O Come, All Ye Faithful (Bilingual) or Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Recessional: Lord Bid Your Servant Go In Peace

Under the former calendar, February 2nd marked the traditional end of the Christmas season. Thus, there would be no problem in inserting a Christmas carol here or there.
 
I had been following the last thread till the very end and just thought how wonderful it was that it lasted so long. It goes to show that it can be done. Here’s to PART III !!! 😃

I’d joined last August, but stopped posting because of all of the criticism. I’m hoping to share and receive inspiration for liturgies, not to be lectured by anyone.

Recessional: Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service or By All Your Saints Still Striving (with the verse dedicated to St. Paul since the feast of his conversion is celebrated two days later)

When I started this thread 2 or 3 years ago I never dreamed it would come this far. It is such a blessing that we have all come to be Church together and share knowledge and music.
You must have a fantastic worship service! Six preludes!! And your selections are wonderful, familiar songs.
What does your group consist of?
Here’s what we did for 3rd in OT:

Thanks for your post and for this thread, Hosea! I haven’t found anything like it out there, and it’s a wonderful resource.

Great list from you, too! I haven’t successfully integrated “I Am the Light of the World” into our repertoire, but hope to some day. Something tricky about it for our congregation…

We are truly blessed to have a full band of professional musicians playing at all 7 music Masses - every weekend! The group usually consists of drums, bass, guitar, piano, trumpet and cantor. Three or four of us sing, so we can vary vocal styling/harmony to suit the song/liturgical moment. The group is talented and flexible and joyful.

We’re not a parish, but an urban ministry center. But, we have an incredible community of faithful worshipers, some of whom travel 100 miles every weekend to celebrate Mass with us! It’s just amazing to be a part of a church that is growing in number and spirit. The people sing and pray (and clap their hands and smile…)

Before I get another round of private messages from people who believe what we’re doing is illicit and somehow profane, I’d just like to say that what we do works for us. And, I’m thrilled that what you all do works for you! Surely, there’s a room for all of us 🙂

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s line up for this weekend. Hope the regular posters from the last thread find this one!

Do you have a job, or do you have a calling? There are times when we get caught in the mundane or difficult aspects of our ministry and can’t see the moments of grace. But if Jesus were to sit down with us on a mountain slope and talk to us as pastoral musicians, he might say something like this:

“Blessed are you who sing psalms, for you have words to call on the Lord.
Blessed are you who play instruments, for you will hear God in gentle rubato and great sforzando.
Blessed are you who compose, for you are like the prophet, explaining the mysteries of God.
Blessed are you who teach, for you are passing on the prayer of music to others.
Blessed are you who practice diligently, for you know the peace of being prepared.
Blessed are you who give up holidays and weekends for the liturgy, for you shall inherit

Cardinal DiNardo chanted the dialogue and the Roman Canon.

I managed to get to Our Lady of Walsingham halfway through their anticipated Saturday Mass. They did not sing, but, the organist played the instrumental version of “Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service” during Communion. God willing, I plan to be there for the 10:30AM Mass and will post (later on), what they used.

The Mass at the seminary today was quite nice. I do not remember what we had as the entrance processional, but, the psalm was chant was chanted, as was the Gospel Acclamation, and we sang “A New Community Mass”. We sang “Eat This Bread” for Communion and “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name.” Their pipe organ is magnificent, as is the one at Our Lady of Walsingham.

From what I understand, we can not deviate from these words.
The new responses are supposed to start in Advent.
