This is what was sung at my parish for the Ascension:

Processional: A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing
Preparation: Father, We Thank Thee Who Has Planted
Communion: Alleluia, Sing to Jesus
Recessional: Go Make of All Disciples

Processional Hym: Holy, Holy, Holy (this is actually meant as a processional)
Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Has Planted
Communion: Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether
Recessional: God, We Praise You (or some other version of the Te Deum)

How Great Thou Art does not really have any Eucharistic connection. Every time I hear it, I think of Elvis. That’s just me. 🤷

Every time I hear “God, We Praise You”, it’s usually to the NETTLETON tune, and then I always think about “Sing A New Church”. 😦 Totally ruined the tune for me.
 
This week I am going to open and close with “Come Holy Ghost” Offertory will be "O Holy Spirit by Whose Breath (All Creatures of Our God and King), and then use Veni Sancte Spiritu during communion. I will have my wife do the verses.

That is a shame. I first knew the Nettleton melody with “God, We Praise You”, but when I heard “Sing a New Church” it did place a bit of a shadow on the hymn melody.

I knew it as “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”. O was floored, truly speechless, when I first heard “Sing a New Church.”
 
I’m not really eager to hear “One Spirit, One Church” this weekend. That song makes me think that the composer had really no good ideas. Just slap on a tacky refrain to “Come, Holy Ghost” for no good reason.

Here’s what we did yesterday (Pentecost)

One spirit one Church. I like this one. I like when a song writer takes a familiar score and changes the chord progression without changing the melody line. It makes for great improv on the harmony. I think we really are a ‘pilgrim people.’

Resp: Send out Your Spirit by the Damiens. Great old song with my favorite kind of chord, major 9th. Sounds great with redundant strings on the old 12.

Offertory: Come holy Spirit/Veni Sancte Spiritus by John Michael Talbot. This came in handy because the reader forgot to read the Sequence after the 2nd reading. And it is such a great JMT song.

Communion: By the waking of our hearts. sweet tune. kinda sounds like a movie score. And Schutte’s Send us Your spirit.

We closed with Envia Tu Espiritu. Fun.

It was really horrible at Mass this weekend. This is one of those songs that really has no purpose, unless it’s to ruin a truly venerable hymn like “Come, Holy Ghost.”
 
We just need to bear in mind the mandates given to us by Liturgiam Authenticam, that official Church texts cannot be substituted with songs or paraphrases. This would also apply to sequences.
 
I just got the call to sing this weekend, so, what I posted earlier in this thread will be what I will use for Trinity Sunday.

I might have to chant the responsorial psalm for a wedding this weekend.

This is how JS Bach wrote most of his music; albeit in a virtuosic way. He took the familiar folk hymns of the people and … augmented them. (Reference for this: Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas R. Hofstadter amazon.com/G%C3%B6del-Escher-Bach-Eternal-Golden/dp/0465026567).
That’s not to say that Kevin Keil possesses the artistry of JS Bach, it’s only to say that this is not only a valid composition technique, but a good idea on some level.

I did not grow up with “Come Holy Ghost”, in fact I have never heard it outside of this song; so for me, this has always been an exciting piece of music: the slow progression of the Hymn portion which is a prayer, juxtaposed with the busier “we” portion of the song, the refrain. Like bookends around the core that is a call to God.

I must confess, I didn’t use this piece this Sunday due mostly to the negativity on this thread, but have found that I regret it.

Boy, Sunday was a complete disaster on every level imaginable… except the congregation didn’t know (thank you God). I had: missing music, missing musicians, missing singers. The accompaniment music on one piece didn’t match the hymnal… (caught at the last minute before Mass). I have had glubs and flubs before, but in all my years nothing to remotely touch this past Sunday. Normally I so look forward to Pentecost, I think I’ll be a little nervous for next year. 🙂
