Yes, I have ask too, now that it is brought up. :o It is a beautiful melody and most people wouldn’t even associate it with his symphony as he is not a popular composer in the non-music world. More people would associate the “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and “O God Beyond Our Praising” to Holst’s “Jupiter theme” from “The Planets”. (Although Holst also set that melody to the hymn.) Yet those hymns are played often, although I’ve heard of some priests not allowing the Beethoven.

I don’t know if it just never comes across, but I can remember a few years back when we did use “Be Still, My Soul” and “This Is My Song.” We haven’t used them since, though.

Another one we used a while back was “Gather and Remember,” which was set to Finlandia as well.

Father Z had this little parody today which I wouldn’t suggest for MASS but thought might be fun for a ‘warm up’ at rehearsal!

To the tune of “The Church’s One Foundation”

The Church’s one foundation is B-I-N-G-O.
It is the one salvation from all the debt we owe.
And when foreclosure threatens we’ll play it every night,
for Bingo pays the mortgage but also heat and light.
 
Since Thursday was the Feast of Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael, archangels, and the Twenty–Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time impedes the feast day of the Holy Guardian Angels, wouldn’t it be nice to have some angelic music at Mass? (Not meaning, of course, sounding like angels, but having to do with angels.) Missa de Angelis anyone? 🙂
 
I had a real tough time this weekend. The one song that was dead on was Battle Hymn of the Republic, but I’m not going to go there. I decided finally to go with judgement throne imagery and St. Francis (Tuesday).

i wish

id totally sing it if there was a choir in the area doing it though. mass VIII is the bomb.
 
So, I had was at a “Come and See” weekend at the seminary and had the privilege to attend Mass on Saturday and Sunday. This is what was sung:

Saturday the Mass Setting was Mass of Light, and today they had us sing the chant versions of the new translations. That was really interesting. 😃

I believe it does go sort of deeper than that.

Very impressive song list. It’s good that these great Anglican hymns (apart from the thrid one which I think is a catholic one) are used in the catholic church. There is a lot of cross-over and ecumenical material in the new hymnals.

Thanks! I love a lot of the hymns from other denominations. There are some really good ones. “O Beauty, Ever Ancient” is indeed a Catholic hymn. It’s a more modern hymn based on a prayer from St. Augustine. You can listen to it here: youtube.com/watch?v=lAb1x0UpRqI

My goal was to include hymns that spoke of God’s creation since this past Sunday was “Respect Life Sunday”.

The imagery is one reason why this hymn has a special place in my heart. I actually used to detest this hymn, but slowly I began to open up to it.

On another note, “God Is Love” by Michael Joncas is something new that my music director is doing this weekend. I always like listening to the teaching of a new piece of music. 😛
 
This weekend we were introduced to the new translation, and we learned the new Gloria and Sanctus using Dan Schutte’s Mass of Christ the Savior. Our music director said that he didn’t want to “overbear” us, so we will learn the Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, and Lamb of God next weekend. I don’t really care for Schutte’s setting.
