Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

I think that I am going to eventually purchase a Worship III hymnal from GIA. I kind of want to see what that hymnal has to offer instead of the usual Breaking Bread from OCP. Maybe I’ll start basing my suggestions off of that.

Buy it before the Worship IV comes out. I posted a review of the coming Worship IV on my blog. There are quite a few misses. Why do we really need over 750 songs when we already have the propers?

Today, at Mass, my selections came from the missalette and from Worship III. I also chanted the psalm, using the response from the misallette, but, the verses from the Gradual. I also chanted the psalm for a wedding Mass earlier in the day, using the Gradual.

True.

I think that my cathedral uses Worship III, and on Holy Thursday while I was waiting to take a picture with the bishop, I decided to flip through it, and I can honestly say that I fell in love with it.

Now, I don’t know the basic layout of the hymnal, but how is it going to be effected by the new translations?

I wound up singing at three Masses this past weekend. The third one was a complete shock. I was called up halfway to help sing so the selections were 50/50, as the choir did not sing and no one told the celebrant.

Here is what the celebrant chose:

Entrance Processional: Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven
Offertory: Gift of Finest Wheat

Here is what I chose (totally last minute, but, that was all I could find in United in Christ):
Communion: Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Recessional: Holy, Holy, Holy

I wish that UIC had better music, as the pickings were quite slim. The good thing was that the people sang and my voice did not give out.

We chanted the parts of the Mass.

I tend to substitute Psalms when I can’t find a setting for that particular day, or if it doesn’t make any sense at all with regard to the other readings. The substitute I find usually fits very well.

As for last weekend, I used “I Will Praise Your Name” (Haas). I know I’m going to receive a lot of backlash on here for that, but it is what it is, and I already did it.

We need to be careful when we recommend Mass settings because they must conform to the standards set forth by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments:

For in doing thus, they render the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy unstable, and not infrequently distort the authentic meaning of the Liturgy.

The settings must fit that criterion in order to be fit for use within the Mass. That is why some of the settings in Spirit and Song would not work, since there are some paraphrases and word substitutions in them.

I’m disappointed, although not surprised, that even after all this, there are still new mass settings coming out with additions/paraphrasing to what is supposed to be used. I kind of understand how it happened in the 70s and 80s with the way things were back then, but this shouldn’t be happening now, especially since we have the new texts.

While I would not choose to use this setting, and while I wouldn’t defend Mr. Burke’s “Amen” to anyone, I am wondering if it actually is all that reprobate. Perhaps it’s something he intended the congregation sing after they say, “Amen!” Would the additional words really constitute an offense?

(Even with advanced degrees in liturgy and music, I am confused sometimes!)

I’ll be careful if/when I ever recommend a Mass setting. In the meantime, I’ll pass along to the community any resources that may assist them in this challenging transition, and pray that they have the capacity to discern what’s viable.

Speaking of resources… Does anyone have a good song with the lyrics “and with your spirit” repeated throughout? Thanks! I’ll take any suggestions.

Actually, it is reprobate because the composer is taking on liberties that are prohibited to him and anyone else under Sacrosanctum Concilium (and reiterated in Redemptionis Sacramentum).

I used the same psalm 145 by Smith. It fit the second reading fairly well (God is merciful…)

It came from the ‘common psalm’ list which, I have been told is acceptable.

I usually use the ‘common psalm’ when the other just doesn’t make sense. Had one priest that hated it when he knew ahead of time I wasn’t going to use the psalm of the day, and my current Pastor said “Do what you feel is right.” Makes my job a lot easier when I’m left alone

I listened to Burke’s Alleluia from Mass of Divine Intervention, and it sounds like something from an action movie.

This starts to make me think that maybe Mass of Creation isn’t all that bad!

Kind of like the Great Amen from the St. Louis Jesuits’ Mass

Amen, alleluia, forever
and ever, forever, alleluia, forever and ever. Amen.

Why can’t it just be simple and just sing Amen, or just sing Amen thrice like in Heritage Mass?
