Ours was accompanied by guitars. If ever there was a piece that calls to be sung a capella it is that chant! So much easier to sing without accompaniment.
Not that this is a competition for bad accompaniments to O Come O Come Emmanuel or anything, but we had a UKULELE! (also a piano, a flute, and a violin)
It did not turn out so well, as you can probably imagine. The odd combo of instruments is because the four girls who choose the songs every Mass all want to play, and I guess nobody’s suggested they choose stuff that actually goes together.
Yet, I was still excited to hear the song. 😛

This is something you’d read on Eye of the Tiber.

Well, the recent “everyone is an EMHC” article a little while ago accurately described this group (not a parish), so it makes sense 🙂

BTW, I adore Eye of the Tiber. 😃

It seems that everyone has a different idea of a suitable accompaniment for “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. I think that it sounds the best just sung acapella like a chant, in a medium key that’s not too hard for most voices. It can be sung in unison or in harmony, but acapella either way.

To me, a whole church filled with nothing but the voices of the people is just amazing. The beauty of that hymn is in its simplicity, so why detract from that with “bad instrumentation”? An occasional, soft “helper note” at the beginning of each musical phrase for the purpose of keeping everyone in tune is okay, but this hymn really suffers when there’s a lot of elaborate accompaniment and ornamentation.

My 2 cents.

I love it that even though the secular world has stopped playing Christmas music, we are just getting started.

👍

So true!!! During Advent, my husband and I kept trying to instill in our daughter that it wasn’t Christmas-time yet in ways that we hoped a toddler could understand. We didn’t play any Christmas music until Christmas Eve. I went through our cd collection and youtube to just play music more appropriate for Advent. Now, we’re going hog wild with Christmas. 😃
