Thanks isnark, that is one of my favourite hymns too. We always sing it to Cruger over here, and it’s also popular for Candlemas.

I’ll jump into the fray here with a belated Sunday entry for Ordinary Time. Our parish has recently undergone a great transition of both the choir director and the source material. We are now using the Lumen Christi Missal and implementation seems to be ramping up now.

Yes, more nonsensical randomness, quite depressing in my opinion. I wish the bishops, either individually or as a conference, to list specific hymns allowed on specific days. There needs to be some consistency. Oh, the Propers…

Prelude: One of J.S. Bach’s two-part inventions (don’t remember which one)
Processional: Angels from the Realms of Glory
Offertory: Of the Father’s Love Begotten (chant)
Communion: Lo! How A Rose
Anthem/Meditation: He Shall Feed His Flock (Handel)
Recessional: Go Tell it on the Mountain
Postlude: Organ improv on recessional hymn melody

It was kind of random…usually they have at least one hymn that goes with the feast. Maybe they were extra busy or something happened this week.

Isn’t “Lo How a Rose” an advent hymn?

seems Pretty baptismal to me.

So is the summons.

Somewhat they are. I said earlier this is a tought week. It is unique. Now if I could go bluegrass, I could find several good dunkin’ themed songs.

Actually, it’s more of a Christmas hymn than an Advent hymn (although I have freely used it on IV Advent and Immaculate Conception). If you look at verse 2, you’ll see “She BORE to men a Savior, when half-spent was the night.” Note the past tense BORE. So this also would make me want to use it on January 1 (Mary Mother of God) as well. My only peeve (only slight) about using it on the Baptism of the Lord (I know, last day of Christmas season) is that I’d rather focus on a slightly older Jesus, as opposed to the Infant Jesus on this day. After all, he was already in adulthood when he was baptized, wasn’t he?

Yes, that’s true. I probably would not have chosen it had I been the one choosing the music (although it is one of my favorite Christmas/Advent hymns, so I did not mind singing it at all today), but as we all know as church musicians, things are not always as clear-cut and easy as it should and could be when it comes to music liturgy. Of all the churches I’ve ever worked in, there is always, always certain parish dynamics those in charge have to be aware of. I know that this particular music director goes through it with a liturgy and parish committee, even if sometimes the music may not particularly be her taste or even liturgically correct. It’s not just the pastor and music director (which is so much easier) making these choices.

As pnewton mentioned, it was a unique and tough week. It was still Christmas in which so many of the hymns focus on the Lord’s coming into the world (ie. a baby and child), yet this day was celebrating his Baptism when he was a full-grown adult. At the other parish where I work, the music director went with a mix of non-Christmas hymns and hymns that could work for the Baptism.

They are pretty good selections for the Feast of the Baptism. One thing our pastor associated with this feast was our call as Christians to spread the Word and live a virtuous life. “The Summons” is a good fit because of our personal vocation; “Behold the Lamb” is another good fit because it echoes John the Baptist’s words, and “Go Make of All Disciples” works because it speaks of our call as Christians to go out and preach the Word.

So they all fit pretty well.

Brian, I love ya man, but that’s one dimensional thinking. Yup, the BVM “bore” the Son on one historical day in past tense. But theologically that doesn’t relegate it to a literalistic employment. Christ is born anew and again for all time. Hence, "Lo, how a rose e’er blooming" can include a definite advent reflection.
