Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming has always been a tweener to me. It makes a good Advent hymn because of the line “Isaiah 'twas foretold it…”, and we hear numerous times from Isaiah in Advent. It also make a good Christmas hymn for numerous occasions. You can use it to honor Mary on the Feast of the Holy Family, and you can use it on the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. It’s a good Marian hymn. I’m not sure about using it for the Baptism of the Lord, but that feast does fall during the Christmas season; however, you can also say it falls on the First Sunday in Ordinary Time. It’s another tweener. The Baptism happens during the Christmas season, but Christ is an adult at this point in time. It’s a very difficult Sunday to select appropriate music. My parish has done all Christmas carols some years, and some years we mixed it with Christmas carols and general hymns. It basically depends on who wants what, and Christmas carols work fine for this feast because we are still technically in the Christmas season; however, when you think about it, is using Christmas carols exclusively the best option for this Sunday?

That’s a great way to describe it… a “tweener” for Christmas and Advent. And I agree, again, that this past Sunday was a difficult Sunday to choose music for.

I like the use of doing a mix of Christmas and general hymns since you are technically still in the Christmas season, but yet celebrating a feast which really isn’t Christmas-like.

See, that is part of my confustion. Next Sunday is the Second Sunday in Advent. Yet Christmas season goes up to the Baptism (I have never seen through). It almost seems like this day is deliberately made out to be a “tweener”, a term I am sure I will find plenty of use for.

*Ordinary Time

I have been told many times in catechesis a long time ago that the BOTL is considered the culmination of the Christmas season; however, it is also the start of Ordinary Time.

When we had the liturgy meeting for this season, we wanted to incorporate Christmas carols just to get one last one into the season, so we did “The First Noel” because it pretty much sums up the whole Christmas season (except the Baptism, of course).

Have any of your heard/used We Are the Light of the World? We haven’t used it in like four years, and I don’t really know if I like it or not. I mean, the verses are scriptural, but there’s just something about the song that’s “meh” to me. It doesn’t really do anything.

Any opinions on it?

As an adult, it’s “meh” to me, but I did love to sing it as a kid. The repetitive nature of the song lends well for children and it’s easy. One of the things I remember liking about it was that the melody reminded me of a “serious” kid movie. It was like I was part of the story… this Christian crusader for Jesus. I’d make up stories in my head about what I was doing while singing it - usually galloping on a horse to proclaim the message of God or being St. Joan of Arc, also on a horse. lol! Whether or not that’s a good thing is another story.

I was also an odd kid, so I’m sure most kids did not think that when they sang the hymn.

Edit to add: It did help with remembering the Beatitudes for kids.
