Hi! I am a second grade song leader for First Communion and am looking for a new song to sing next May. Anyone have any ideas for me? We could add signing to the song. We sing this for the parents after communion as a meditation.

Thanks
My kids learned “Come To the Table of Love” from the “Enter the Journey” book which is for children. It has an easy round option as well. The music isn’t my personal cup-of-tea, but the children picked it up easily and learned the round fairly quickly. They felt like they accomplished something and were challenged. You can do it as a meditation so that it doesn’t encourage people to clap afterwards.

For Feast of the Ascension,

Hmm

Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise.
Here I am Lord (maybe, I have to think on this one)
O Sacrament Most Holy
O Sanctissima
Go (Leon Patillo)

Be Not Afraid could be good if you want a contemporary replacement for Here I Am, Lord.

Did that week before last. “Let not your hearts be troubled” and all. I am also thinking of using some sort of Christ the King type of hymn, To Jesus Our Sovereign King, for example. The Psalm ties in with this idea. In fact, I think I will go off in that direction.

Our Ascension day hymns will include:

Hail the Day that Sees him Rise

O king most high of earth and Sky

See the conqueror mounts in triumph

The Lord ascendth up on high

All Hail the Power of Jesu’s name

What we did for Memorial Day:

Processional Hymn: #647 - “God of Our Fathers” NATIONAL HYMN
Preparation of the Gifts: #532 - “Let There Be Peace on Earth” Jackson/Miller
Communion Hymn: #431 - “Amazing Grace” NEW BRITAIN
Recessional Hymn: #649 - “America” AMERICA

Final answer. When in doubt, wife decides. Seriously, I one song on the Great Commission after dismissal is sufficient. I would rather focus on the triumph of Christ.

Our Music

Here’s what we ended up doing for the Ascension:

Processional Hymn: #563 - “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” LAUDA ANIMA
Preparation of the Gifts: #430 - “Be Not Afraid” Dufford
Communion Hymn: #686 - “Yes, I Shall Arise” Alstott
Recessional Hymn: #183 - “Hail the Day That Sees Him Rise” LLANFAIR

I was happy to hear “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”. That’s one I haven’t heard in a long time. I’m also not a big fan of Bob Dufford’s music, for I think he doesn’t write many pieces suitable for congregational singing, but I have always had a soft spot for “Be Not Afraid”.

I love “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”!!! It is not played enough. I agree about “Be Not Afraid” being difficult for congregational singing. No one ever does it correctly, but it is still a favorite for funerals in my area. The funny thing is that I think I’m probably the only person who sings it exactly as written because whenever I am singing a funeral the organist/pianist always makes a comment that they weren’t prepared for me to sing it correctly because everyone sings it “wrong”. That said, if I know how it is sung “traditionally” at a particular parish, I will do it that way so that it doesn’t confuse anyone.

Honestly, I think I prefer the typical changes in rhythms for that hymn than the original. It’s just my classical training that sometimes forces my mind to do everything exactly as written. lol!

Interesting. We have the opposite problem in the UK in that “Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven” is probably overplayed being often used an entrance or recessional hymn in Ordinary Time. Personally I wouldn’t have selected it for Ascension.

Our Ascension hymns were:

Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise
See the Conqueror mounts in triumph
The Head that once was crowned with thorns
All Hail the power of Jesu’s name
Eternal Monarch, King’s most high

A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing
I Know that My Redeemed Lives
Alleluia! Sing to Jesus & Lord You Give the Great Commission
Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise

Anyone have any good ideas for Mass settings? We’re meeting tomorrow to plan for Trinity Sunday through the end of August, and we only know two Mass settings: * Heritage Mass* and Mass of Christ the Savior. I really want to throw some suggestions in the mix tomorrow. I’m really, really, really trying to stay away from Mass of Creation.

How about the revised Proulx “Community Mass” setting? The congregation at one of the parishes where I work sings it well. They picked up fairly quickly.
