I wonder …GREEN :shamrock2:or LIGHT GREEN:bounce:…that is the (ORDINARY) question …whether tis nobler to alternate or even include Olive or Teal…does Teal imply Blue? Well… let us say “TealGreen”… Do you understand?..
Music should reflect the “Colour” …should it not?
How do we change without changing?

Curious …how many shades of green are now routinely seen used…and do they imply a marked difference or just portray the local palette…??

What are the best of the best instrumentals (preferably for piano) for prelude during these ORDINARY times…? And as a side…is the trend for or away from encouraging preludes?

:flowers:

You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness…👋 Saint Augustine

Faith of Our Fathers …

"In 1689, Lord Baltimore’s government was overthrown and the king of England took control of the colony. The Church of England was then made the official religion. After that, a new law was passed which said that Catholics could not worship in public, and the royal governor, John Seymour, ordered the Catholic chapel closed."

Lest we forget…

One more reason to boldly ❤️ sing “traditional CATHOLIC hymns”…👍…wouldn’t you agree?

Apparently there is a theory - that I don’t buy incidently - that the reason some Catholics don’t sing is prior religious persecution. The lack of musical participation in many parishes can suggest a church ill at ease with itself, nothing is worse than non-participation in a participatory liturgy. That is the reason to sing out - and because the church expects us to. And we are to sing ALL hymns at mass, not just the few traditional ones written by Catholic authors.

For this week:

Glory and Praise to Our God
Only This I Want
We Come to Your Feast
Though the Mountains May Fall

Well…Guess we’ll need to bush the dust off those Saint Joseph Hymms we put away on May 2nd sometime before March 19th!:harp:

*VATICAN CITY, June 19, 2013 - In a decree released today by the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Holy See has announced that the name of Saint Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will be added to the Eucharistic Prayer II, III, and IV in the Roman Missal./

Composers for St. Joseph anyone?

Do we sing at Mass or Sing The Mass…
"…to say that something is Catholic is not to say that it was written by a person in communion with the bishop of Rome but that it is in accord with the universal apostolic heritage. This means, of course, that not all hymns are suitable for Catholic liturgies. But it also means that if a hymn proclaims the Catholic faith, then—regardless of its origin—we should consider it a Catholic hymn. "(The Catholic Case for Protestant Hymns -Nathaniel Peters)*

Thomas Day’s compelling book, Why Catholics Can’t Sing (Crossroads, 1991)
]The Irish :shamrock:people were persecuted for centuries. Their glory is that they “kept the faith.” There was little opportunity for singing at Masses celebrated behind the hedge rows; one did not have to attract the attention of English soldiers by singing. The silent low Mass was the norm. The American hierarchy is largely Irish in origin, and the lack of a liturgical musical culture among them is easily traced to the historical events of the past four hundred years. The musical developments in our country since the council may well be understood if we admit those facts and developments.

Not quite Catholic…but certainly Christian!
:harp:
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his—
How can I keep from singing?

Last week

Holy God We Praise Thy Name
All that we Have
O Sacrament Most Holy
The King of Love My Shepherd Is
Though the Mountains May Fall

On a related note, I notice that Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent keeps popping up here from time to time. My favorite genre is the older hymns, like from the 17th - early 20th century. I have missed a lot of Catholic classics as I was not raised with them, but I use my wife as a resource. She insists this is a must have and we are scratching our heads why we haven’t been using it. So I have a new hymn to add thanks to this place. 👍

It’s a good hymn. We thought about using it at our last meeting, but we ended up not using it. I want to try and push it for the Christmas season definitely because it does reference the birth of Christ: “King of Kings, yet born of Mary…”

It is a wonderful hymn that we often sing at communion. It’s not really a Catholic hymn though - though it is based on the Liturgy of St James the translation was written by Gerard Moultrie and the stunning Piccardy tune by Ralph Vaughn Williams both Anglicans. It only appeared relatively recently in Catholic hymnals.
