Lent is here, so the parish is shifting into utilizing more of the proper antiphons for the Mass rather than hymns with a view to shifting more and more to that over time, even beyond Lent. Eventually it would be nice to work with the Roman Gradual, but I know that will take a lot of time. Meanwhile, we slowly climb the ladder of options from #4 to #1.

Entrance: Antiphon
Offertory: Hymn
Communion: Antiphon and Hymn
Recessional: Marian Antiphon for the season

Here is what I used for Ash Wednesday:

Draw Near O Lord
Were You There
Lord Let Me Walk
I am the Bread of Life
Take and Eat
Hosea
Near the Cross

This weekend, I will draw from the list, and add:

At that First Eucharist
These Forty Days of Lent

Here’s what we did for Ash Wednesday:

Processional Hymn: #493 - “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” IN BABILONE
Distribution of Ashes: #117 - “Leave the Past in Ashes” Consiglio
#116 - “Ashes” Conry
Preparation of the Gifts: #122 - “The Glory of These Forty Days” ERHALT UNS, HERR
Communion Hymn: #529 - “O Beauty, Ever Ancient” O’Connor
Recessional Hymn: #129 - “In These Days of Lenten Journey” Manalo

First Sunday of Lent:

Entrance Chant: Psalm 51: “Create in Me” Kendzia
Preparation of the Gifts: #124 - “Led by the Spirit” KINGSFOLD
Communion Hymn: #337 - “Behold the Lamb” Willett
Recessional Hymn: #668 - “Change Our Hearts” Cooney

Sunday, March 1, 2015 - Second Sunday of Lent - Year B

Entrance Chant: Psalm 51: “Create in Me” Kendzia
Preparation of the Gifts: #123 - “'Tis Good, Lord, to be Here” SWABIA
Communion Hymn: #509 - “Transfigure Us, O Lord” Hurd
Recessional Hymn: #132 - “Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days” ST. FLAVIAN

As we have done in the past few years, we are opening with Psalm 51 for every Sunday of Lent and having the congregation kneel while the ministers enter. It’s very effective, and I feel like it adds something extra to the season. Lent is very solemn, and this solemn entrance really reflects that. We are also using another setting of Psalm 51 for the responsorial psalm each Sunday.

Lent has to be one of my favorite, if not my favorite, liturgical season. I love the solemn tone to it. I love the Easter season, of course, but Lent really “sets the stage” and complements Easter very well.

Sunday, March 8, 2015 - Third Sunday of Lent - Year B

Entrance Chant: Psalm 51: “Create in Me” Kendzia
Preparation of the Gifts: #466 - “I Heard the Voice of Jesus” KINGSFOLD
Communion Hymn: #436 - “You are Near” Schutte
Recessional Hymn: #730 - “How Firm a Foundation” FOUNDATION

Is the Roman Gradual being revised so that the antiphons sung are more in agreement with those recited from the Missal?:bounce:

Are you all doing a bilingual mass/service for Holy Thursday and Good Friday? At our parish, the Holy Thursday mass is bilingual – half English, half Spanish (with a little Latin thrown in for universality) – and the music is divided between the Spanish mass choir and one of the English mass cantors (I recruit some of my choir to form a little “choir” for the English hymns).

It’s actually a beautiful mass, even though I can’t really follow much of the Spanish. We have a booklet with translations in English and Spanish to help.

God bless your Holy Week!

Gertie

We had a wonderful Palm Sunday procession today with brass band:

Hymns before Palm Gospel: All for Jesus, all for Jesus
Procession: All Glory Laud and Honour
Crown Him with many Crowns,
At the name of Jesus,
Ride on, ride on in majesty

Mass setting James Mcmillan, Mass of St Anne

Gospel sung chorally to Victoria
Offertory: My song is love unknown
Post Communion: Glory be to Jesus
Recessional Rock of Ages

Yes, we are bilingual both days. Holy Saturday is mostly English with a little Spanish thrown in.

This will be our fifth year using Latin for most of the Mass. Back when we started it this, our priest also started celebrating Friday Mass in Latin to gain familiarity. Now that Mass has a little under a hundred people at 6:30 in the morning.

I hope all of you continue to have a blessed Triduum!

There is a green hill far away
Faithful cross above all other

Hail thee Festival Day
